  • why are these headphones so popular on this site?

    • Best ones money can buy, I travel ALLOT and nothing compares with nose cancelling, battery to the price.
Stacked with the Amex Offer and the price match i managed to get for around $300

      • Are they good to use at home?
I always see deals of em on the front page

      • +2

3rd gen Sony are meant to have better noise cancelling and are already for sale for the same price as the Bose.

I have the Bose myself, so I'm not saying this due to brand preference, if the M3 have fixed the headband cracking issue they're better than the Bose in every way except comfort, but they've also improved on comfort with the M3.

        • Can you replace the earpieces on the sony if they become worn out? Have done so on QC25s.

        • @Icecold5000: Yep, I've even heard of people using the QC35 replacement earpads on the Sony, although I'm not sure how well that works myself.

        • @BradleyDS2: unpopular opinion, but you gotta wonder why sony is on their third gen already :D

        • +1

@splathowa: their first gen had headband cracking issues but didn't hear much about that happening on the 2nd gen. the third gen has usb c and a bunch of other new features. In terms of features on paper, they are ahead of the QC35's.

        • @splathowa:

To get people to buy newer models?

        • Which 3rd gen model of Sony headphones are you referring to?

        • @Trishool: WH-1000XM3 which should be coming out soon. some early reviews have come out

        • @jamestan14: Thanks. Likely going to be out of my budget anyway.

I recently bought these from TGG for $176 and am pretty happy with them (half the price of Bose QCS2 when on sale, so hopefully half as good - reviews on YT and other sites have been quite positive), so perhaps will check out the higher end Sony's in about 2-3 years time when I've got larger pockets to empty.

          https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sony-wireless-noise-cancellin…

        • @splathowa: Bose are on the second gen already, and if they're releasing a new gen they'll likely announce them this month, so you may be saying the same about Bose shortly.

The 2nd gen of Sony increased the noise cancelling to the level of the Bose, along with some other important improvements, but the noise cancelling is worth noting as having the best noise cancelling was the reason the Bose have been up on top for so long, but Sony became neck and neck with Bose with the second gen.

The third gen have increased audio quality, added Type-C, added quick charge, have deeper more comfortable ear cups and have improved noise cancelling, so their noise cancelling can even be considered superior to the Bose now.

I know a lot of companies including Sony make new models and have better on paper specs but no real world noticeable difference in order to make consumers upgrade, but with the WH1000 they have done legitimate improvements with the new models.

      • Love how you put allot in all caps but then you used it wrongly in your sentence :p

    • +1

Why are headphones in general so popular, every 10th deal is for headphones :-P

    • +1

i've always wondered this. these are terrible value for money as day-to-day headphones, and surely ozbargainers aren't all flying that much…

      • Personally, I use them while travelling on the bus. They block out a LOT of noise, and while the audio quality isn't the best for the price by a long shot, they sound better on the bus than the alternative good audio quality headphones since the background noise is blocked out, making the audio from the headphones clearer.

If you're not catching a lot of public transport or a lot of flights, they probably aren't worth it. A lot of people do no research and get them to block out voices by using them in an office environment, where the ANC won't be very effective and the main benefits are from the PNC which is already available cheaper in headphones with better audio quality and more features.

I get my moneys worth out of them, but I'm sure many don't.

        • -1

If you play white noise tracks off youtube they certainly block out your co-workers voices.

        • @Icecold5000: Yeah, but that isn't the ANC blocking them out, that's the passive noice cancelling + white noise playing. ANC doesn't work well with voices.

        • -1

          @BradleyDS2:

It works well for me. I don't think I can engineer better ANC myself so just have to take what I can get.

        • @Icecold5000: Yep, I agree that it works well.

However what really blocks out the noises is the passive noise cancelling the headphones have, which you can get in headphones that have better audio quality for a lot less, combined with white noise.

The QC35 and other noise cancelling headphones are designed to not let much sound in, which is the passive noise cancelling available on a lot of other headphones as well. Most sound that gets in is cancelled out through the active noise cancelling, which is the main feature of the QC35 and what makes them work so well with machinery, public transport, planes etc. Sadly ANC isn't very effective with voices, as higher pitched sounds and sounds that aren't constant are harder to cancel out with current technology.

White noise combined with passive noise cancelling works well to block out the noises, but the ANC doesn't make much of a difference, which you can see by using the Bose app to turn off ANC and compare the difference.

The passive noise cancelling the Bose provides works well, but you can also get passive noise cancelling headphones that sound better for a lot less, so buying active noise cancelling headphones like the QC35 for office environments generally isn't recommended.

I hope that clears it up :)

        • -1

          @BradleyDS2:

I recommend them for office use because I have empirically observed they cut down on the voice annoyance factor. If people have an issue with cost then they should choose accordingly but it isn't really a factor for me.

        • @Icecold5000: Yep, they will work fine for blocking out voices, what I was trying to say isn't that they won't block out voices or work well in an office environment, but that many cheaper headphones will block out office noise just as well if not better while having other benefits such as better audio quality.

They work fine as is, but there's many alternatives that are cheaper and just as effective while having other benefits.

I own a pair of QC35 II myself that I'm quite fond of and was even using during my earlier responses to you, I'm not trying to talk them down, just trying to clear up the misunderstanding.

        • -2

          @BradleyDS2:

The problem with your argument is that to prove it you would have to come to,my office and actually compare the QCs with every other kind of Passive noise cancelling headphone and come up a score mechanism to quantify their effectiveness. The sound quality doesn't matter if you're listening to a white noise soundtrack. Attempting to isolate a singular variable and the argue a priori that this is the determinate factor is somewhat misleading in an multi variable environment.

  • +1

I have these and love them however I would be holding out and looking at the new 3rd gen Sony's if I were buying now.

  • Myers, is that owned by Myer?

  • +5

They go for $370 every week or two, and September is when Bose usually announce new QC headphones (obviously based on a small sample size) so if you want these it's better to wait a week or two and save $42 or wait until the end of the month to see if a new model is released for the same price.

    Sorry OP, no deal.

Unrelated, but the WH1000XM3 have just released and are worth considering instead of the Bose. Sennheiser also make noise cancelling headphones that are known to be fantastic, but the noise cancelling isn't quite as good, so have a look at both of those as alternatives before settling for the Bose.

    • Yea agreed, but very good for those stacking with the Vouge Amex deal, $20 off $50 gift card up-to 3 times. Myer's is participating and can be used in conjunction.

    • Bit of a bummer that the M3 is on Videopro's website (which is all staticice shows up), but not their ebay.

      • Looks like there's stock issues atm, next batch is on the 30th of this month and then you should be able to get them next 15/20% off.

  • +3

Why is this a bargain; these are regularly around the $350-370 mark..

    • -3

Usually grey import, unless as Bradley puts it you wait for a sale

      • im a little curious.
if an australian based local company sells you grey stock will australian consumer laws still apply to the products you purchased?

      • +1

Are you sure about that? VideoPro usually goes on sale and they state no grey imports.

        • Yep, can confirm.

I think they were saying you can regularly get them for $370 or wait until the weekly/fortnightly deal for $370 local stock.

  • +4

Unless you're doing that specific method, they're cheaper at $368 delivered here..

    • -3

It's more for those stacking with the Vouge Amex Deal

  • +1

Bought for $368 delivered from videopro in recent ebay sales, which happen fairly routinely. If you're not in a huge hurry, better to wait for next 20% off sale

    • +2

Or just use the 20% off that running now for another 8 or so hours ?

You're better off using your cheap gift cards for some thing else rather than going through the whole chain of events you need to manage just to get it down to a price that is about what the normal sale price is for these items.

  • +4

Why is this a deal? Not everyone even has an Amex. If an ozbargainer can't wait for these to go on their usual weekly sale I think they'd need to hand in their badge.

  • +4

This is an unusually high price to be considered a good deal on this particular set of cans. Sorry OP, there'll be a significantly better deal within the next month!

  • How do you stack 3 in one location? T&C says max once in a retailer up to 3x in different retailer.

  • +3

Wait so the actual deal is price match at Myer then use the Amex to further bring the price down? Price matching is not a bargain so you posted the original store you price match (which is not a bargain price either) ? Not only is this targeted to those who have Amex, but to those who got the Vouge deal and is looking for QC35II.

  • +1

These headphones are great but considering how often they go for around $370, I don't think this is a good deal

  • +3

OP, don't feel disheartened by the negs. We appreciate you taking the time to post this deal.

It's just that it's only a bargain for targeted people with Amex cards that don't want to use the gift card discount on anything else, and you also need to price match.

The issue isn't the price itself, it's that it's several steps and only available for a very limited number of people, while a similar price is available to everyone every week or two.

I'm sure people who appreciate you posting this deal, but it's so targeted and specific that it's either not worth it or unavailable to most users, hence the negs. Don't take it personally, we all appreciate you contributing to the site, thanks!
