I don't think this is a deal - for only a 1 hour flight I think you are better just flying Jetstar - $57 one way on some dates I checked in November. Obviously more to add check in baggage but it will still be cheaper than Qantas. Virgin also has flights on the date I checked for $85 and they include check in baggage. Qantas is usually very expensive.
Haven't made this trip in a good 5 or 6 years, thought I might be out of the loop, but pantsparty said exactly what I thought was the case, plenty cheaper options available.
Besides, it's an hour flight, anyone would do, just get the cheapest possible one. They mentioned 57 one way, last time I went was 55 so more or less what I thought.
I just booked Oct 2018 flights on Jetstar RETURN for that price.
And for some this may be a consideration; Qantas fly a Dash 8 aircraft on the MEL - LST service, whereas Jeststar fly an Airbus A320.
Preferred in stormy weather - much more fun.
Also keep in mind Qantas only fly Dash-8 aircraft on Mel - Laun, whereas Virgin & Jetstar fly jets.
Pity the 2019 AFL fixture hasnt been released yet…
