The Spectator Australia Magazine Subscription 10 Issues for $10

I was about to subscribe, but I think I might just watch…

  • -7

Yeah great magazine, you get to read the thoughts of Rowan Dean the lunatic. Are you kidding me.

    • Are you kidding me.

Hahahaha! Knew it wouldn't take long for a triggered lefty to downvote this post.
Anyway, great deal… I'm already a subscriber but even find value in this mag at full price.

      • +1

Wow, you did it man, you must be really proud of that. Congrats on the imaginary clairvoyance too, that's always handy for making yourself feel good by pretending to know the future after it happened!

  • +2

Have no idea as to the contents but sure is cheap for $1 issue delivered. Thanks OP, might give it a go.

      • +5

        Extreme right? Lmfao.

        • +12

Surely you know that these people think that anyone right of Karl Marx is a Nazi.

‘Literally Hitler’ is they favourite term, followed by racist, bigot and islamaphobe.

        • +1

I’m m neutral and get hated by both sides. So y’all snowflakes!

      • +9

Stick with the ABC if their content makes you feel better.

        • +2

Alinsky’s rules for radicals, number 13:

"Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it."

      • Melt.

If this is the sort of thing you like to read on a Saturday morning while smoking your pipe, you'd be better off reading the opinion section of the Australian. All the authors are regular contributors. Plus you get to read the rest of the newspaper… not just highly skewed opinion pieces.
Then again, if you want to read David Flint (a hard-core conservative and monarchist) and his contemporaries gloating about Turnbull's demise, then the $1 a month might be worth while.

      • +2

not just highly skewed opinion pieces.

Please don't tell me you think the rest of it is fair and balanced.

        • +1

The Spectator is conservative (or classically liberal) it's not trying to pretend anything other. Although, there are a few lefty and libertarian contributors.

        • Well, ABC obviously is

  • +11

Legit, negative vote is political, not based on deal.

  • +1

Great magazine. It’s worth it just for Douglas Murray’s pieces alone.

  • +12

What clown negged this? It’s a great deal, regardless of your political persuasion.

    • +6

Agree. It is very sad some get so twisted and irrationally sensitive to diversity of thought. Humour is much the worse for it.

  • +8

    Good deal, poor content.

Why anyone would pay for the regurgitated ramblings of the Australian right is anyone's guess. They haven't had an original idea in a long time. Save your money and go read the fever dreams of the Americans right's blogs and you'll not only save money but you'll be ahead of the issues when they get a re-run here 2 years later.

    • -1

Why anyone would pay for the regurgitated ramblings of the Australian right is anyone's guess.

Well, we're already paying $1.1 billion for the "regurgitated ramblings" of the Australian left by funding the ABC, so why not? At least here you get to choose whether or not you want to part with your $10.

Personally, I'm paying about $150 per year for the the ABC, which I don't watch or listen to, without being able to opt out - now that's a terrible deal!

      • Only 2 negs? I’m disappointed!

        • Your point is valid. I gave you gave you a couple of positives ;).

      • Well done Elektron, in around fifty words you've summarised half of the articles in The Spectator.
If people want more, they should definitely subscribe.

  • +2

Looks like I'm subscribing just based on the tears from the snow flakes.

  • +5

thought-provoking, insightful and engaging political analysis and cultural articles

The UK section, yes. The Australian content? I guess if you think unashamed cheerleading for the hard right of the Liberal Party counts as any of these things rather than blatant propaganda, then okay.

  • +22

Here's a thought - whatever your political persuasion, don't get caught up in an echo chamber of your own beliefs and biases.

Great deal, purchased (by a left-leaning unionist).

    • +1

It's a good deal, but at the same time, it doesn't surprise me that they're doing this. Their subscriber base isn't getting any younger.

The old model, of employing columnists and getting them to pump out 500 words every month, just doesn't make for exciting reading. If any of these old dinosaurs had anything interesting to say, they would have said it by now. Quillette and other online sites commission individual pieces so there are a lot of different perspectives

They're also losing out to dark web intellectuals of the Jordan Peterson type, who don't give a damn about toeing the party line and therefore are more reflective and freewheeling as a result.

  • +5

That's not a deal. THIS is a deal (free access to 7000+ Oz/intnl newspapers): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/396459

  • -6

Shitty magazine full of shitty opinions. Not cheap enough to wipe with.

    • +2

Not cheap enough to wipe your opinion with, you mean.

    • +1

      Ok don't purchase it then.

  • +11

TBH maybe worth signing up because I suspect they make a loss at $1 per issue.

    • Plus, you can use the magazine itself to bulk up your compost bin with brown matter. It's a win-win.

  • -5

Legit bargain, horrible magazine. Can't think of any use for the paper either.

    • +1

Yeah, I think the Spectator is an embarrassing pile of shit too, but I don't think you can technically write "legit bargain" and then give the deal a negative vote…?

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Good deal.

  • -4

I bet it's full of justifications for the way the Liberal Party is currently doing things and it never mentions that we are currently committing war crimes by attacking Syria.

    • +3

You seem confused about how geopolitical military alliances work. Here's a clue: They're not partisan.

    • +4

"…we are currently committing war crimes by attacking Syria."

      Are we really?
Don't get involved and we are condemned as standing by allowing another atrocity to happen.
Get involved and we are condemned as war criminals.
No matter either option Western countries are expected to absorb all the refugees.
Kind of seems a lose-lose situation.
      What is your suggestion?

  • +6

Interesting that this deal comes out the same day as it's revelaed readership is only around 3000 people (as revealed in the Alan Jones defamation judgement)

    • +2

Rather, I think the promo is more to do with the leadership change and it being the ideal time to grab some new subscribers as people are looking around for political analysis of the events.

      • Oh yeah, I certainly don't think the two facts are super linked (beyond possible low readership and trying to boost numbers). -Just funny timing with their low readership being a small part of the biggest news story of the day so far.

        • -1

          Enjoy your conspiracy.

        • +4

@rokufan: As I said - don't think there is a conspiracy here, short of a magazine doing a sale to boost readership (which is just basic promotion really). Just think it's funny ha-ha that it's the same day as the judgment shone light on the readership.

        • +2

@Andrew87: Ok sorry, I just read your last comment as sarcastic. Basically a magazine doing what a magazine does, trying to boost readership at an opportune moment. BTW, similar paid publications have piddly numbers. Even many of the larger free news and opinion sites using ad display business models now have their begging bowls out.

        • +1

@rokufan: Yeah, it seems that print media really is (profanity). I'm on the opposite political end of spectrum to what this mag peddles, but I'm pretty shocked to see readership is that slight.

  • +1

    Great magazine.

    Cheap, terrible right-wing trash!
