    • I too am genuinely interested in this also. I have an iPhone 7 that is filled to capacity. I am leaning towards either the iPhone X or Xs. Are the extra dollars on the Xs actually worth it? Any genuine comments would be greatly appreciated.

      • Feeling the same way with my 4 year old iPhone 6. An extra ~$500 seems crazy for a 15% faster phone with a slightly better camera and waterproofing.

The cheaper XR version doesn't seem too bad

Still disappointed in no USB C

Charging via USB to a computer system or power adapter

As long as it isn't an apple computer!!

Has dual sim but also new sim card sizing

iPhone XR is not compatible with existing micro-SIM cards.

Battery seems good, Apple claims it will last 90 min. longer than iPhone 8 Plus

If it was me I would get the XR version. Not due out for a while yet so maybe keep an eye out for bargains of iPhone X in the meantime

      • +3

iPhones have been on the nano-sim bandwagon for a while now.

        • ah ok, the way they stated this I thought it was another sizing

      • +1

FYI, that XR has the 720p half HD screen.
Which is the same type of screen for entry level xiaomi phone. 130aud price tag.

        • Misinformation isn’t a help to anybody.

IMO it’s a disappointing resolution for the price, but it’s much better than 720p.
1792x828 (iPhone XR), ~62% higher pixel count than 1280x720.

It’s the same 326ppi that many potential purchasers would’ve already been accustomed to (iPhone 6-8 including Plus models has the same ppi), if they had no qualms with the resolution and savvied an upgrade, they get a bigger screen (which is apparently still a better LCD, I’ve yet to see it) with all the internals of the latest XS (afaik).

2.3k, what a bunch of clowns

    • +5

You bet Samsung winning this year. Apple is overestimating people willing to buy

      • +3

2018 has been the worst year for Galaxy phones yet.

        • Some of my friends will jump ship to Huawei P20 Pro after they saw new iPhone features/prices. Not sure if Huawei is better phone ?

      • Also, the Samsungs are far better phones

      • People said that last year and phone profits increased. Apple don’t won’t to be #1 in units moved, they want to be #1 in profits. They clearly generate more cash than their competitors phone divisions.

  • +5

Does anyone else think the name is silly - XS sounds like extra small

      Bring in XXS pls

      I thought it sounded excessive!

Quoting from a guy in WP,

You say the pricing is insane and unjustifiable – many will disagree and this will be proven as there will be a huge uptake of the new models, particularly from those who never had an X. These things are now computers that many people spend hours on everyday – when you look at it like that, the price becomes easier to digest.

In a way it is true, but not always the way to justify cost (per day usage). However, if you do use your phone a lot and looking to get the best, yeah the price tag is easier to digest. if you only use the phone for calls and SMS, then there's plenty of alternatives as well.

    • +10

those people justify $2500 phone because they say i will use them for 2-3 years and i look at it everyday so it is cheap and worth.

      but…………

next year, apple release new model and they got sucked again.. and saying the same reasoning as above to make them less guilty.

      • +1

        ^This.

Until there is a function or feature that is actually a requirement to how I will use the device, I don't see the need to upgrade.
Spending $2.5k on a new device for me to do the exact same things is a complete waste.

Look at why GoPro share prices have dropped, Apple peaked years ago just like GoPro, people are starting to learn their old devices are doing the same thing, they meet all their requirements and there is no need to buy a new one. But Apple are gaming the system with their software updates and crippling old devices to force people to upgrade. We need to speak with our wallets and not enable their gouging.

        • I always stay about 3 generations behind, and don't upgrade unless my phone meets a watery death or otherwise stops working. Only costs around $300 every couple of years

That's a load of rubbish when you consider Apple supports 5 generations/years of iPhones with their software updates which is far more than any other including the fragmented mess of Android.

Also, they haven't peaked years ago, when they've just reached the $1b threshold with record iPhone sales constantly being broken and still rising.

You're more than entitled to have an opinion and not buy one but don't spread rubbish.

        • @Hybroid:
The real reason behind go pro's share price drop is Ppl buying DJI instead of go pro.

      • +2

The difference between iPhones and other devices is when you upgrade next year, your device is still worth 80-85% of it's value after an entire year's worth of use (provided good condition).

So it's not $2,500 down the drain annually but say worst case you resell it this time next year for $2,000. That's $500 over 12 months is $40 a month. That's not considered very much to have the latest device every year.

        • +2

I suspect that the high end might be harder to predict…but yeah…Apple gear seems to retain a bit more value than others.

        • +7

"say worst case you resell it this time next year for $2,000"… your WAY overestimating your worst case price, best case in 12m you will get $1500, theirs a very small dumb market willing to pay 2k for a phone, apples gone into stupid mode & our weak A$ isn't helping

        • +4

Thats 2x Xiaomis value lost in a year.

Only if the Apple circlejerking keeps up.
The resale value is held up by people's perception of Apple iPhones not losing value.
Once people don't resell their phone, then the resale value is moot.

People don't resell android phones because they don't need to.
My Sony Xperia Z2 lasted me 3.5 years. I paid $650 at launch.
I recently acquired an Xperia XZ2, approximately $700. The device itself is a flagship android phone, might not be popular, but it is a top-tier phone (SD845, 6GB RAM, Dual-Sim)
I expect my phone to last minimum of 2 years if not 3.

My phone is already considered a bit of a premium paid for the branding. Similar specs can be obtained with a top-tier xiaomi phone around $550-$650.

$2000 is just ludicrous for a phone, waste of resources.
I can get an android and a very respectable windows laptop for that price.

        • @cwongtech:
All the Android guys in my office upgrade their devices annually (Galaxy, Pixel, OnePlus), which all have significantly lower resale value after even just a few months.

Frequent sales/price slashes, newer releases with the same tech but cheaper (think Mi Max etc).

Apple resale is high because demand is high, lack of competition and high brand new entry price that never goes on sale makes a very healthy and stable used resale market.

      • +2

I'm the kind of person that wouldn't have a problem spending that on these devices, because I use them constantly for both personal and work use.. I don't know anyone though that is refreshing yearly. I jumped from a 4 -> 6S+ -> X. I'll have the X for a fair few years before I even considering upgrading again.

I'd also add that every one of the phones I've purchased is still in use by one of my family, as I hand them off to them when I upgrade. If you don't mind using an earlier model, they still work fine today. A big part of why I'm willing to pay a premium for Apple gear is the longevity. Almost every Apple device I've ever purchased is still running and in use today, even 10 year old MBPs.

  • I have been a long time Apple user and even though I am not looking to move out of the ecosytem anytime soon, I think the pricing on the Max model is quite frankly ridiculous. A more palatable option would been to price the Xs at $100 less than the current price and Xs Max priced at iPhone X levels.

That said, I am pretty excited for the new series 4 watch. It looks better and has much more functionality even though I am on Series 3 cellular.

    • How often do you use the cellular feature on your watch?

      • Yup all the time especially working out. You do not need to carry your phone with you everywhere. You can pair your bluetooth headphones with it and then play music via apple music right from your watch. It costs $5 extra with my carrier but I got first 6 months free.

    • I'm pretty amazed that the iPhone X is no longer offered for sale. That has to be a new record. November 2017 launch date, September 2018 sales discontinuation = Less than 1 year of sales.

    • No 3D touch on the XR is silly, they almost had an entire lineup of phones with the feature and now the older 7 and 8 series on offer has the feature at a cheaper price than the new XR.

    • AirPower and the AirPods wireless charging case have had all mentions removed from Apple's website. It's wild that they're just trying to hide it now after pumping it up so much.

    • No more SE! This has to be the suckiest part of the whole lineup. I'd love a 5/5s/SE sized phone, with the 6/7/8 design, wireless charging, water resistance/proofing, and 3D Touch. Even if it was as expensive as the XS.
It's shame that they've neglected practical sized phones when they once praised their excellent size.

    • +2

iPhone X is no longer offered for sale

I am not surprised, it was 10th anniversary phone. The upgrade from X to Xs is too minor to keep both of them in the production IMHO. If they had kept the X, the price difference from Xs would have been only about $100 which would've discouraged people from buying X anyway…

    • +1

      • +3

I bought an iPad 3 at launch and didn’t bat an eyelid when the 4 came out. It’s still kicking.

The retina screen on the iPad 3 still goes down as biggest step improvement I’ve seen on any new model Apple product.

    • No 3D Touch on SE.

No more screenshot when grasping the iPhone X to remove it from pocket.

  • -7

Dafuq? Surprised anyone here buys iPhones…
There have been zero real worthwhile advancements in phones the past 5 years, not sure why people continue upgrading constantly to these overpriced phones, its insane.
This is the only link you need until a real step forward in phone tech emerges (such as foldable, solar, battery advancement etc) : https://www.mi.com/en/index.html

    • +5

Some people do not mind paying a premium for products that have features of value to them. Apple's stance on privacy is quite important that cannot be equated by any Chinese brand phone. Their ecosystem is second to none for most people and the look and feel of the devices is subjective. Some people want rock bottom cheapest value for money (like all the Xiaomi stuff on here), but not everyone does. Premium markets and demands exist. Nothing wrong with that.

      • +3

Honestly I think you'd be surprised by the look and feel of the Xiaomi mi phones, they are on par with apple's design and build quality, so much so that pretty much everyone who has seen and picked up my phone thinks it actually an iPhone, they also have a hard time believing me when I tell them it costs less than $300 and does everything that their $2000 iPhone X can do and more (well except the camera quality, i'll admit its pretty rubbish on my M1A1 Xiaomi).

I'm by no means an Apple hater, I used to have an iphone for several years and I use and love their laptops, but its a tool and I use it for work 10+ hours a day and their build quality when it comes to laptops still can't be beaten (although other brands are starting to catch up).

… However spending $2000 on a phone which really hasn't seen any innovation in over 5 years is almost the definition of insanity (buying the same thing and expecting a different result) especially when other brands are matching (and surpassing) the iPhones specs, features, build quality and price. At this point buying a new iPhone is literally just a fashion statement and nothing more. Is there anything useful an new iPhone can do vs one from 4 years ago?

        • +3

they are on par with apple's design and build quality

I recently picked up a Mi A2, and while it punches above its price, you can't seriously believe it's 'on par.' iPhones are unquestionably better made, iOS apps tend to be better updated and optimised than Android, you get the best in-store service, etc. Some people are willing to pay for that. And let's not forget that the kitted-out $2000 (really, $1800) isn't that blatant anymore when flagships like Note 9 or Pixel 2XL are RRP'ing at $1500+, and iPhones hold their value remarkably well.

        • @Strand0410:

          are RRP'ing at $1500+

But you can generally can get them cheaper than RRP unlike iphones. The 512GB iphone XS Max price is insane.

and iPhones hold their value remarkably well.

Not good if you don't need to get it on day one :D

        • +1

The 512GB iphone XS Max price is insane.

Pick a laptop or a car, load it with all the trimmings, and the price rockets into the stratosphere. The top-specced SKU of any product is unjustifiably expensive to most consumers, they exist because 1) prosumers, 2) rich, 3) bump the average selling price. The vast majority of this year's iPhone buyers won't pick the iPhone XS Max 512GB just as most Android users aren't buying the $1800 Galaxy 9 512GB.

Not good if you don't need to get it on day one :D

You're not getting a discounted Galaxy or Pixel on day one either. Expensive phones are expensive. But the iPhone is going to depreciate the least if you want to sell it in 12 or 24 months, vs most handsets which sink like rocks.

        • +4

The one overriding feature that Apple provide which is unmatched by other brands is warranty support.

I have an Iphone 7 Plus. On the 22nd month of ownership, it completely died when I plugged it into the charger. Maybe it was because of some cheap ebay cord or something else.

I took it to the Apple store and they tried to diagnose the issue to no avail. So it was replaced on the spot with an exact same model. It’s refurbished but it doesn’t really matter to me. My phone was almost 2 years old as well. Best thing about it is the replacement phone also now comes with 2 year warranty again.

That alone makes the Apple proposition better than any other competitor in the market. All you hear are horror stories and difficulties when it comes to warranty time for Android phones.

        • +2

          @Strand0410:

Pick a laptop or a car, load it with all the trimmings, and the price rockets into the stratosphere.

Yea lol, but not like the gap is that big when it comes to phones.

You're not getting a discounted Galaxy or Pixel on day one either.

Actually did with preordering the Note 9. Phone prices dropping soon after release is a good thing. Only bad for those who have to buy phones on release day.

          Expensive phones are expensive.

They are, but not Apple expensive.

But the iPhone is going to depreciate the least if you want to sell it in 12 or 24 months, vs most handsets which sink like rocks.

True, but some android phones like the Galaxy Note and Pixel lineup don't drop like others.

        • @ozhunter: Not denying the Apple premium, but let's not make it more than it is. Apple charges a 10-20% premium, always has. The flipside to that is the advantages I've mentioned above. And the fact they rarely discount means their phones hold value, yes even more than Samsung. The iPhone XS Max 512GB is a non-issue because what percentage of people are buying that model? Probably the same handful who bought that ridiculous U$10,000 gold Apple Watch from a few years back. If you actually look at the models that bulk up their sales, they're expensive yes, but not unreasonably so.

        • @Strand0410: I literally just held my M1A1 in one hand, and my colleagues iPhone in the other and in terms of build quality, materials, feel and look they are almost identical, actually I if I had to guess which phone was more expensive while blindfolded I think I would say the M1A1. So yeah, I totally believe it and most people on my team still don't believe that I paid under $300 for this phone so you cannot claim they are better made.

Most of the things you are listing aren't really true. The worst batteries I've ever had have been on iPhones and Samsung's, however when my Samsung battery started failing I simply bought a new one and swapped it out. I think optimisation on Androids has come a looooong way, I use my M1A1 heavily and only usually charge it once every two days, none of my iphones have ever lasted more than a day.

Sure in-store service sounds great until you realise there aren't any actually apple stores close to the CBD (in Melbourne), so that is actually a bit of a disadvantage. I actually had to take a half day off work to get my mac looked at last year as the closest one was in Chadstone!

And just to clarify, people who are buying Note's / Pixels etc are in the same boat, there's no need at all until a real advancement in phone tech comes along. Only excuse is just not knowing there are decent phones out there for a fraction of the price, or they want to use it as a fashion accessory, most iPhone users in my office who i've spoken to about this blatantly admit that is their main reason too…

        • @SkMed:

My friend recently got the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 for around $250 delivered while I got the Galaxy Note 9 on that $84 plan that was posted. The Xiaomi phone does feel great.

While the Note 9 is better in every way(both have 4000mah battery) and has more features than the Redmi Note 5, I still can't deny that his phone is better value imo.

I was a long term Apple user ever since the 3GS. I owned a 3GS > 4 > 4S Water Damage > 4S > 5 > 5S (Optus Returned) > 5S > 6 Plus (Salt Water Pool) > 7 Plus > iPhone X. I also owned a Macbook Pro. iPad Air 2. Apple TV and Apple Watch first gen. I'd also owned multiple iPod Touch, classics and nanos over the years. I worked in telco for years and was an advocate of the brand. I used to wait up eagerly to watch every Apple event, no longer.

However over the past year I broke the cycle. My Apple TV stopped working and I got a replacement from Kogan however in the mean time I purchased a Chromecast Ultra. It was so cheap compared to the 4K Apple TV so I thought I'd give it a try. I loved it and sold my replacement Apple TV still in its box when I got it back.

Being a regular OzBargain user I was also often following new deals. One popped up at the Good Guys for a Google Home Mini for around $45. I thought what the hell. I'll give it a try. I loved it. It, unlike Siri was able to understand and answer promptly what I considered to be simple requests. In the meantime I had sold my Apple Watch as I was unhappy with it's performance.

A few of my work colleagues were running the Pixel 2 XL. It looked like a great phone compared to my iPhone X. It was bigger. Had great speakers. A clean Android OS. Fast fingerprint scanner (Face ID didn't really sell me). The camera was also amazing. I sold my iPhone X and bought a Pixel 2 XL and never looked back.

In the most recent step of moving from Apple I got rid of my Macbook Pro and swapped to a Dell XPS 13 which has so far been a great machine.

The only Apple product I have left now is my iPad Air which I usually just use for watching videos on occasionally and it does the job.

I still have huge respect for Apple and love their design and simplicity however encourage everyone to look at all the options as there are so many devices around today that are fantastic.

    • -8

And how is Pixel 2 XL at $1350 is not expensive given it comes with a vanilla chipset which is older than a $500 phone, has no physical stores and it not built with the same attention to detail and custom hardware as the iPhone? If I can pay $1350 for a Pixel 2 XL, I have absolutely no issues paying a few hundred dollars more for a comprehensively better phone.

Expensive Android phones make even less sense than the iPhone so the argument that buy Android because its cheaper than the iPhone makes no sense what so ever.

      • +3

I didn't say anything about the Pixel being cheaper than the iPhone nor the iPhone being expensive.

        • +4

          Thanks for your input.

    • Well said Adam, I got out of the apple game with the first apple iphone and tried the 3G iphone.

Since then its been nokia, samsung, xiaomi and finally onto the one plus.

Apple has nice features but cant beat bang for buck of Samsung and Chinese brands.

I dont know how people do it, but I cant get myself to buy a phone for more than 1k, it just seems like way too much for phone that I would trade up for every 2 years.

      • Agree. Although last years iPhone X with the 20% eBay promo brings it down to about $1250 for the 256Gb, so pretty tempted with that. I paid around the same about a year ago for the 256Gb 7 Plus.

I’m pretty deep in the Apple ecosystem so that’s my only problem. I’d love to go to Android again but I’ve had a few in the past and they’ve always slowed down over time, which is something that’s keeping me away at the moment.

Anyhow if you buy one beware of your surroundings

You are holding $2.3k in your hands

    • Get a better job so u don't have to live in a ghetto

      • You don't need to be in the ghetto to get robbed. Go to a court hearing or jury duty you will know how many cases phones get stolen. It's staggering. This price will make it even more attractive for crimes.

You guys have no idea at all.

Watch what happens. More thefts, scams on gumtree than ever before.

You think blocking IMEI will work? They will simply get it overseas and people can use it

        • understand what your saying. however i wont let criminals dictate how i live my life. if i want a fancy new iphone which will assist me greatly in my day to day activities (google maps, translate, sms, phone call etc etc) i wont not buy it and settle for a base model nokia 3300 just to avoid the possibility of getting robbed. its like saying dont drive a nice car because there are car jackings. drive a crappy $2000 hyndai elantra instead.

Apple definitely knows how to fleece people out of their hard-earned dollars. Case in point: The XR model will come with 64/128/256 GB of memory. It's only $70 more to go from 64GB to 128GB, and that's a nice improvement to invest in. It's $250 to go from 64GB to 256GB.

Now look at the XS models: they come in 64/256/512 GB of memory. No 128GB model. So either stay with 64GB, or drop another $250 to go to 256GB. Could they have offered a nice medium at 128GB? No doubt. But on the "premium" models, why give consumers such choice. 64GB isn't a lot, and those that guy that model are probably already reaching in price to buy the XS (probably paying more than they really want to).

I got the iPhone X at release. I don’t need it bigger. It’s the perfect size so I can get atleast another year out of it. Nothing was appealing really.

The watch looks nice and might be time I get one.

Disappointed that no iPad Pro x with no bezel :-(
Also no air pods2 or wireless charger. Overall disappointed. Looks like it was IPhone X for the mssses.

    • I think new ipad isn't selling well. So there's no new releases.

I mean I had my ipad air since 2016 and I don't see any need to upgrade at all

Don't be, its coming by the end of year..

    • I am exactly in the same situation. I will keep my Iphone X. I bought Iwatch series 3 cellular last year. Little tempting to buy the series 4, but still I am not totally convinced if little bigger screen and few other minor upgrades would justify $749 series 4.

All I can see are more steps in the wrong direction smh.

You hear that Apple? All of your accountants, economists and product design team members are wrong and you should instead heed the advice of an OzB poster.

Ayyy good to hear there are still apple fanboys who validate poor design choices

$1229 for a phone (iphone xr) with 720p in 2018 is nuts.

People vote with their wallets and Apple has created a microcosm of fanboys that can regard reason as noise.

I feel so sorry for people like gdstamp, yet I'm in awe at their loyalty.
