  • I've never seen a product like this before. Basically a cheap alternative to buying a HDD enclosure.

Except you can buy enclosures cheaper than this cable.. and they protect the HDD.

This cable requires a power supply though, which kills its practicality. An enclosure is powered entirely by the USB port.

    • +4

Power supply is optional for 3.5" drives that need more power.

I've got a similar version of one of these cables and it's actually very handy for drives you don't need to be in an enclosure, like if you are cloning your system drive to a new SSD or something. I think mine is a Simplecom brand.

I'd say it's really more a temporary device for copying to/from drives. People tend to buy 3.5" drives in housing with PS thrown in and shuck them so they would't need these. For 2.5" drives enclosures are about the same price and usually screwless so easy to put in the drive. But this might be a handy tool for some people.

Something does not add up. The pictures show 3.5" HDs and the specs talk about external power supply. But external power supply is not needed for 2.5" HDs which can be powered by USB. I'd say the title is wrong and should be 3.5".

    • +3

Sata and power connector are the same size and position for both sizes of drive.

      • -1

Well then the description is missing mention of 3.5" drives and the need to add a power supply yourself, although it's in one of the pictures. To make things more confusing one picture mentions PATA drives, but that is probably a mistake.

This is a bargain i bought one for $18 delivered from ebay, it works with a samsung ssd which i ripped out of my old broken laptop and used this to transfer my files from it.

Going forward my 500gb ssd is now going to be an external harddrive since this works so well.

no extra power source required using USB 3.1 slot.

          Bought one.

        • @moocher:

          thanks. removed.

          sorry :)

Bought one too, thanks op. Details on website seem pretty clear to me. As an aside have done a lot of buying from Zavala and found their customer service top notch. Had a couple of issues with items, returned them and received full refunds including return shipping.

  • So to clarify, if I have 3.5” HDDs from 5-10 years ago, will this work in accessing the files on them, or will I need to source external power additionally?

    • 3.5" hdd's will typically need power supplied to them but as this connector is one piece I don't think it would work for your application. You can buy caddys or docks to suit the 3.5" drives but I haven't seen them this cheap.

    • +3

There is a socket for plugging in a power supply (not supplied, but socket will probably suit the PS from another external 3.5" disk), you have to look at the pictures to see it.

Also if you have PATA drives this is not what you want.

    • +2

If they are 3.5" SATA, you need a 12V power supply connected to this converter.

If they are PATA (or SATA, and already have a way to power the drives separately) and can make do with USB2.0 this is a cheap option for ~$4
A USB2.0 kit with 5/12V PS is around the $12 mark. Should cover everything if speed isn't an issue and is a just a once off to pull some files from it.

What power supply would be compatible for this?

    • One of the images mentions 12V DC, I would expect 12V 1A to be adequate. Images don't cast much light, but it's usually a 5.5mm barrel connector (used in things like LED strips).

    • It'll probably be the same as the power wall warts that come with external HDs. I collected a few but only use one as I connect the HDs one at a time when doing backups. Same size socket on all the enclosures I've encountered.

  • Only prob I've had with Zapals is postage can take up to 2 months. So guess this will be a surprise gift in November.
