[NSW] 2018 Toyota Corolla Ascent Hatch Automatic CVT (Glacier White) Runout $19,990 Driveaway @ Lander Toyota Blacktown

2630

Yes i know it is the runout model, but for a brand new automatic japanese built car for under 20k it seemed like a pretty damn good price hence the reason for putting up here for anyone that was in the market. We visited the dealership today and the sales guy mentioned they have only white and silver left in stock so we picked up a white one as im over silver.. my mechanic mentioned this model is pretty much bulletproof so we bit the bullet and made a decision as used ones were similar priced, so see ya later to our old nissan and hello to the good old vanilla toyota :)

we also tried the 4c/l discount that was posted last month and it worked

        • @lostn: yeah, i got my licence in nsw and was constantly scaring my wife when she practiced for the test, and the way I saw her drive around I was thinking she gonna fail at least one. To my surprise she passed without a hiccup, turned out she only had to to the three point turn and not the parallel.

        • @lostn: lol in qld i was made to do every one, then on way back to moto reg a (profanity) indicated to go left then when i picked my gap turned right leaving me stuck in the oncoming traffic… Instant fail.

Second time i was made to do every single one again, got told most people wish they could para park like me rofl, its the same thing as used to work a forklift on bigger scale.

        • +2

          @Seedy seed:

I had a masochist tester, made me do one on the right hand side.

        • +1

          @Scab: lol

        • @lostn:

You're kidding?! No wonder people can't park for crap these days and have no idea how far away they are from other cars with a slack VIC driving test like that! They should make everyone do a parallel park like they used to. My driving instructor had me do it most lessons between with poles once I learnt the basics of driving.

        • @Scab: One way streets can have that. Instructor should have prepared you for that too if they were good.

        • @lostn: in NSW did my test 3 years ago and I had to do both reverse parallel park and three point turn

And when we got back I had to 90 degrees park at the RTA parking 😒😒

I guess now I know why most of my friends avoid that RTA lol

Well, I think there's a real fear a testee might do damage to someone's car during a test. The fail rate will increase.

      • I used to suck until I tried doing it. It's not as hard as it looks.

      • +1

at $19k no assist..at $30k yes..probably cheaper if you learn than pay $30k..

  • +3

You can't go wrong with this deal, plus+ from me.

But personally I would find it hard to spend $20,000 now and forever be driving around in the old model, when in a few months time you could get the new model with low k's (demo or secondhand) for the same price. Consider also that the engine and transmission are all new in the latest model and Toyota don't do major updates to the Corolla range very often.

    • +4

Actually, the new corolla is like $5000 more expensive.

I've seen two around Sydney in the last month.

      • I just realised this is the Ascent model, not the Sport.

Corolla Sport hatch are usually $24k drive away. Ascent hatch not sure, about $22-23k?

Talking about the old model of course.

        • All new Toyotas coming out will be like 15-25% more expensive than their past model.

        • @smuggler: because of weak Aussie dollars or just plain Toyota tax hike?

        • @wtfnodeal:

I heard the latest model near 28,000

        • @superforever: what? Cheapest is $28000?! Top of the range is what? $38000?

        • @wtfnodeal:

I am not 100% sure anyone can confirm?

EDIT: Just checked full drive away price ascent sport $27,984 for that price why Corolla? ZR 34,164

        • +1

          @smuggler:
          @superforever:

The old Corolla Ascent Sport hatch also has a listed drive away RRP of around $27,000.

But for years it has been on "sale" for $24,000.

I can nearly guarantee it will be a similar story with the new model. The Corolla is a small car and there's a lot of decent competition in the class. They won't sell many for $28,000.

The same can be said for the sedan version. I bought a brand new one 2.5 years ago that was on "sale" for $24,000. The listed RRP on the invoice before discount was around $27,000. I bargained hard and got it for $22,000 drive away. Probably could have also got a good size discount on the hatch if that was what I was buying.

        • @tranter:

New model looks good and has good safety tech but has a tiny hatch area (forget it if you have kids), rear seats are tight, antiquated phone interface/tech (no carplay/android auto/mirroring), no parking sensors on any model, space saver tyre doesn't save any space and if you get a hybid/top spec you get a puncture repair kit which apart from only working with some tyre problems will cost you a new repair kit and new tyre each time.

Once people get past the marketing and think real world use may change on the new model and affect sales.

        • @daydream:

Corolla hatches have had small boot space for a while now. That's one reason I bought the sedan although I prefer them anyway. They have big boot space for a small sedan and more leg room in the back compared to the hatch.

      • How do they look? the promo pics make them look a little more exciting then last model, but in the flesh is a different story.

        • They look great. Typical Japanese hatch that looks very similar to a Lexus Hatch. Lots of aggressive edges and body kit features.

      • The new one has no base model too, so you need to buy the Ascent Sport for $24-$25k

        • I thought it was $28k.

        • @smuggler:

Yes, that's the "RRP" if you can call it that. The previous model Ascent Sport has a similar RRP but nobody buys it at that price. It has basically been on permanent sale for years at $24,000 drive away. See my comment above.

    • You also have to take in to consideration the new engine and transmission might have teething problems. I'd rather get a model in production for a couple of years if you're considering value. Spare parts may be harder to find in 10 years time though. We might have aluminium printers by then though.

  • Ho hum

  • +5

Been driving this car for a few years now.
If you are looking for a cheap reliable Japanese built car with capped servicing by all means.
Otherwise, seriously there are plenty of other/better options.

Cons to name a few; outdated interior & engine, CVT- droneeeeeeee, uninspiring to drive.

  • +6

Thanks OP, I picked up 3 on my way to Blacktown train station

    • Did you fit them into your backpack?

  • Cashrewards?

  • +1

My dad bought this car when it was all new model, for $22,900 (with pearlescent paint, carpet mats and full tank). That would have been 5 years ago. His was Ascent Sport, not sure what this one is. Might just be Ascent.

I don't think it's that great a price for an Ascent. Ascent Sport is normally $1000 extra, and it's well worth the upgrade.

It's a reliable car though. The interior didn't feel very upmarket, but the dash does have soft touch plastics. The built in clock was a bit old fashioned.

I just looked up the pricing on the all new Corolla and wow.. they are expensive. They're more expensive than comparable Golfs.

    • +12

Reliable? - heck yes. This is the staple of every rental car fleet in the western world.

We've had a number of Toyotas in the family, and no one has ever made a warranty claim or needed to out of warranty. Anything that needed changing is wear and tear parts. That says a lot.

But like you said, they're not the kind of car you would enjoy driving if you're a car enthusiast.

    • It's because they've dropped the cheapest models. Every model has active safety in the new series. Every one. I think this is great as it will force the competition to do the same.

I'm actually keen to see where the pricing ends up after a while on the new model.

      • What normally happens in new gen models is, the features that were in premium models get moved to base models for base model prices. That's how prices have kept from spiralling all this time. A base car hasn't shifted beyond the $23k range since way back when, despite being more packed with features than older gen cars. Over time things get cheaper to make, but instead of reducing price, they keep the price the same but include more technology for the price.

If Toyota continued the pattern they've taken, their prices would continue going up with every gen until they become BMW prices for a Corolla.

Mazda3 neo sport can be had for not much more, advertised price $23000 DA for auto,I'm sure you can negotiate a better deal being run out model as well.
way better specced than corolla accent.
    it has mag wheels!
premium paint as standard except 2 colors
proximity key/starter button(only corolla ZR and hybrid has it,not even SX)
    crash avoidance braking(low speed)
    pedestrian avoidance braking
rear parking sensor(as well as rear camera)
more power and torque with lower claimed fuel economy
    no CVT
    5 year manufacture warranty

personally I think Mazda informative system is better too,has internet connectivity via bluetooth for internet radio, screen at eye level, control at armrest level.

    • It seems Neo sport is the lowest model now. Back then there used to be just neo, then neo sport

    • mazda 3 is more expensive

      • +1

Why? You wanna GTA in real life?

      • +1

        Newer Corolla is more expensive.

    • -4

Mazda ruined a nice car with a horrible Infotainment system stuck in the middle of dash that can't be hidden or folded down. Ruined the car, so ugly and in ones face. Shame as nice cars otherwise :-)

      • +1

go test one,the informative system is light years ahead

    • reliability vs Toyota? Considering buying the Mazda..

      • I see just as many 1st gen mazda3 on the road, which is basically same platform.and many 323 which is th previous name for it.
remember this corolla has CVT transmission,it's not the same as the reliable corollas in peoples mind.from google, seems CVT has been invented more than 100 years, and been on production car for a few decades, been adapted on many models since the last decade, yet how many older cars equipped with CVT are still on the road

    • Yeah, but it’s a Mazda! All those dude-bros driving round going “zoom zoom zoom”

      ;)

      Wink/irony/sarcasm etc

    • +4

Keep in mind Mazda reported fuel consumption is usually significantly worse when compared to real life (check whirlpool).

    • Since 2015 Toyota corolla has not been attractive to me. Mazda is the way to go

  • +1

Good post, great value for a car that will last forever.

  • +1

Congrats OP on a reliable purchase.

  • +4

I have a 2007 Corolla. Seems stupid that they are charging me to upgrade to the current version. Shouldn't it be a free upgrade?

    • Good point! It's about time car companies caught up with the 21st century!

    • +1

Do you pay the monthly subscription fee?

  • Whats the normal retail price for this by the way?

  • -1

For the same price you can probably get a Holden Astra 1.4 turbo made in Germany…but Holden will probably go the way of the Do Do in 5-10 years, so risk to owning an orphaned brand car.

    • +6

The resale value on the Astra is likely to be abysmal, only rivaled by the resale on a new Commodore.

Holden is so desperate for sales they're pulling out all the tricks.

      December 2017:

      https://www.news.com.au/technology/innovation/motoring/car-a

"To hit Holden’s ambitious annual sales target — dubbed “fast finish” — dealers were required to report cars as sold, even if they didn’t have a customer name on them"

"Dealers estimate there are more than 1000 Astra hatches in showrooms that have been declared as sold but are unregistered and undelivered"

Or how about the $500 cash offer if you test drove a Holden but ended up buying another brand's car?

      • +3

Or how about the $500 cash offer if you test drove a Holden but ended up buying another brand's car?

I wish I knew about this. What a bizarre promo. Pay someone to buy a competitor's car?

        • depends on fine print of the promo ….same engine size, etc ….

      • If people cared about resale, everyone would be driving $17,000 swifts, since they only lose 5-7k over 5 years

        • Only if we see them on the roads.. Looks too feminine.

  • Should've got a wrexy mate haha.
    Congrats!!

  • +9

Corolla will last longer than your marriage

    • +11

      Forget Marriage.

Turn up to a date in a base model Corolla and you won't get a second date.

But her dad will think you're very sensible.

      • +1

        Date the dad then?

      • +1

Corolla won't lose it's looks either. Other half may end up with it and everything else after the marriage though ;-)

  • +1

Get i30 or elantra, much better looking cars

    • +1

They also depreciate faster than a divorcées wedding dress

      • +4

Hmmmm not that I’ve seen. The resale seems similar to a corolla.

      • +3

Your talking about the old Hyundai Excel days… Lol. I use to look down on Hyundai, now days I seen to like them.

  • +4

Great cars, have a 2013 ascent sport since new, 0 problems and have been very happy with it. Only complaint is that Toyota are residing Android Auto, but other than that it has been a great car.

    • The sport is a much better option

  • +6

Nonono!! Do not buy this car! this is not a HIGH YIELD INVESTMENT car! (Westpac guy) >.<

  • +2

    Very good price!
    Reliable engine

  • +1

I've driven a fair few of these via hertz and can say they are a great point a to b car. Really good mileage, and just plesant to drive.

  • -1

    Thanks OP.
    Bought 4

  • +2

What're the options for buying this in another state? (I'm in VIC atm)

    • +3

      Send me the cash
Promise I’ll have it sent to you by AusPost

    • +2

call up the dealer, do the deal over phone. pretty much all dealers can ship cars anywhere with a car freighter service.

  • I heard a motoring guru on the radio (2GB) say to expect big discounts in the next 3 to 6 months due to the falling sales figures for most brands.

    • People aren't buying new cars anymore?

      • i’m hanging back and waiting for electric and hybrid options ….. european legislation, uk, china and many other countries making the move so should see more models and at better prices.

problem with petrol is as our dollar falls petrol goes up, and if chinese economy takes off again petrol goes up again, and i don’t do trips longer than 400km in a day.

also in melbourne most of the time stuck in traffic or crawling so electric car is ideal.

        • New Corolla hatch has a hybrid option for about +$1800. Rated 4.4l/100, based on current gen hybrid corolla it's closer to 5.5l/100, but better then 9l/100 ish of the manual.

    • +2

All the gurus on 2GB are poor excuses for journalists. I wouldn’t trust their predictions.

  • Just a reminder that this is a last generation and it will take a bigger depreciation than the new model (as most cars do when a new generation comes out).

  • +1

    damn no manual

  • Paid $19,999 for a 2004 Corrola Assent Automatic Sedan in 2004 (Silver). This is cheaper almost 15 Years on. Better than 2004 prices!

    • My 2004 Corolla Ascent is still going strong.

      • Mine was in an accident and was written off in 2014. Had about 205,000Kms on the ODO. There were some fuel injector issues which required replacement when it was just out of warranty but nothing else other than oil changes in its life.

      • Paid the same price in 1992 for N14 Pulsar. Still have it and it drives well for next to nothing and has more space/flexibility than all in the current class and I don't care if it gets dented by someone who can't park!

Corolla station wagon was my first car. Shame they don't sell a wagon edition now.

  • What is the cheapest and most economical car both with and without the extra special features (reverse cam, automatic parking, inbuilt gps, anything else anyone can think of that would make driving more easier? basically as "childproof" as much as possible.. yeah that was a bad choice of words)

Wondering if the price gap between a car for a single driver and maybe occasional large batch of groceries versus a huge people mover is worth it.

  • +1

FYI there are much cheaper used Toyota Corolla’s which still have factory warranty, such as, https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Toyota-Corolla-2
also heaps in VIC for some reason.

Would strongly advise looking at lightly used, near new Toyota’s, rather than this run out deal. Let someone else take the depreciation hit.

    • This one excludes government charges

  • +1

Use some of the money you save from eating ham & cheese sandwiches everyday to buy this.

  • FYI there has been a recall in the US for possible CVT failure https://www.toyoheadquarters.com/threads/2014-2017-toyota-co

  • Just commenting to say I had the 2012 CVT (model before this one) and loved it. My brother now owns it and is very happy still. Also the guys at Lander Toyota are great, especially in the service department. You won’t be disappointed. Enjoy :)
