Ziplock Bags for Sous Vide

Hi guys, so with my anova been using goliath zip lock bags. I've only been doing steak but tried chicken and guessing it's because of the higher temps i've found that they end up leaking. I can't find any other varieties at woolies/coles. Wondering what you guys use that's a bit more durable and also safe for sous vide.

Cheers

  • I use the Aldi ones but like you, only steak.

    • Replying to my reply.

Saw the Aldi (Hercules?) Freezer bags. Shouldn't leak. Thick AF

      • I clip the Hercules bags above the waterline, with a rinse and dry afterwards. However, after the second or third use the bottom corners often allow water to seep.

  • I bought a kmart vacuum sealer .

$60 but it works well enough so long as you double seal it .
As an Ozbargainer I'm sure you can get cheaper if you wait a bit .

  • The Ikea ones are pretty good.

    • Is it those purple ones? They were terrible for me, kept leaking or water kept going in somehow. I ended up buying those rolls from Aliexpress.

      • Yep - the purple ones.
They were even better for me than the Ziploc brand bags I bought from the States.

Got some of the reusable silicon bags. They work a treat and don't take up space in the trash can.

  • Instead of spending money trying a lot of alternatives I would just spring for the vacuum sealer. I've used mine heaps since I bought it, not just for sous vide, it's great for resealing packets of chips or salad mix.

You actually reseal chips or salad???

Ain't nobody got time fo dat

The band name "ziploc" bags dont leak. I used them for anova sous vide cooking before I bought a vacuum sealer. I bought my ziploc bags in bulk from costco in gallon and half gallon size bags. Not sure where else sells them if you're not a costco member. When I was googling to confirm how to spell this brand I found this aticle which backs up my assessment of quality: https://lifehacker.com/the-best-and-worst-plastic-food-stora…

    • Just wondering how big the half or full galloon sized ones are? Biggest item i'd be sous viding are rib eye steaks on the bone.

      • A gallon is roughly 4 litres. So half gallon would be just under 2 litres.

  • Another vote for ZipLoc. If you're not a costco member there are people on fleabay that buy and resell them for a markup.

Most youtube videos point towards a bulldog clip to the side of the pot and none have the zip lock submerged.

    • Thats what I used to do before I bought a vacuum sealer .

  • Ziploc brand only. Everything else is crap. You can get the one gallon bags from Costco.

  • I have had mixed success with the Aldi bags, so now only use the vacuum bags.
I trim and season the meat with salt & pepper, vacuum seal and pop in the freezer.
Just allow about 20-30 minutes per portion to defrost with the Anova.
The vac sealer was from Aldi. Buy their vac bags when they come up on sale as well.
The Aldi ziplock bags are excellent for keeping things like coriander, pac choy, celery, etc fresher longer.
Give it a good rinse and remove as much water as possible, into the ziplock and then into the fridge.

  • Make sure they are BPA and phthalate free. Glad brand fits this bill. Ziploc is better but American. I use a vaccuum sealer myself, i bought it from a commercial kitchen place and buy the bags by the roll so I can make my own sizes.
