  • It's a JB exclusive model but it can't be any worse than the Teac…

    • TCL makes all their own parts

They also do small cheap and nasty up to large top end units

  • Any got info on if this TV is any better then the last deal from jbhifi https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/391815 TEAC

  • Some TCL models (particularly overseas like the mid range R617) are very highly rated. The local modes, according to whirlpool, can be a bit hit and miss. Unfortunately, unlike Samsung, Sony and LG, TCL models are not standard across the globe so, it's pot luck.

  • 50hz refresh rate is awful , right?

    • +1

50hz is the same as 60fps/hz its just different manufacturers use different methods of measuring unless your using your tv as a pc monitor you won't notice

Im more interested how good the hdr is compared to say a hisense or other model tlc

      • I would hazard a guess at the hdr being pretty poor at this price range.
Especially given even the $900+ models are still only 8bit HDR.

    • I had an interesting discussion about 50hz a while back:

      tldr: not bad.

  • 4k seems pointless when I can't stream 4k content, how is the 720/1080p scaling compared to a 55" 1080p tv made a few years ago?

    • +1

1080p scaling tends to look fine without issue as all the TV has to do is turn 1 pixel into 4 and bam you are done(I'm sure a marketing person from Samsung and Sony could make that sound much more technical and sexy but meh). The pixels are so small you wouldn't tell the difference even if the TV is using 4 instead of 1. 720p scaling is a bit harder as the numbers don't divide well so you may find things look a bit funky. That said things don't divide nicely between 720p and 1080p so you will likely find a 4K TV handles 1080p and 720p signals about as well as an older 1080p TV. The main differences in quality at that point are going to be colour accuracy, brightness and any other improvements in panel tech.

It's worth noting it is almost impossible to get 1080p TVs these days anyway at these kinds of sizes. I remember hearing two years ago it was actually more expensive to buy a 1080p panel than it was a 4k panel at 55" sizes for factories in China. Any TV you can buy now which is large and 1080p may very well be a runout of old panel stock.

  • Does this have HDCP2.2?

    • I bought one of these tvs and it seems to be a TCL 55P4US rebrand as it runs off the 55P4US software and has the same connectivity, haven't tested for HDCP2.2 yet though.

  • Hello All, does JB HiFi have any stackable discounts at the moment? On top of the 5% discount from Entertainment Book's JB HiFi gift cards?
