Electricity Bill - Moving House

So I just recently moved house, and when I moved house I sign up for Red Energy for the electricity.

And then couple days ago, I just receive AGL electricity bill for period of 30 August to 10 September for $642.82 (I don't know why this expensive). The address on the bill was for my unit but it just said energy consumer (they didn't put my name).

I want to ask you guys what should i do with this bill?
I never sign any contract with AGL or any services (i dont even have an account with AGL)
I used Red Energy for my electricity.

Don't pay it, it's not in your name.

Same thing happened to me when I bought my place.

Rang them and they removed the bill.

I had a similar situation in February, I was told to ignore it and don't pay it, they eventually gave up and stopped sending me bills

No way, I had the exact same problem! With AGL as well! And asked here as well https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/330376

I was pretty worried before but after hearing the issue happen with you and now OP above it just sounds like AGL is trying to take advantage of new and worried tenants to pay up for money people were never meant to. Honestly I find this pretty bull now after hearing this.

As per yourself and the people here I just chucked it in the bin and definitely went with a different energy provider, never heard back from them ever again, never had any issues with electricity, never got sent any bills, everything was all good.

  • You will have to call them up. When someone moves house the electricity retailer is responsible for the usage on the meter which is AGL until another person signs up with AGL or sets it up with another energy retailer. Maybe red energy didn't change the accounts over yet, if you don't get it sorted, someone may come over to disconnect the power. When you moved into the house did anyone come over to read the meter for the change over?

I would say you are not properly setup with red energy.

    • A tech came and setup the electricity connection. I got welcome letter from red energy also i got my bill by red energy.

AGL tried to do this to me too. I signed a contract with DODO before moving in. But what AGL did was refuse to give up the billing rights. Eventually after not paying and constant letters for 3-4 months, they gave up the billing rights. I ended up getting 1 quarter for free.

  • Perhaps someone rented the place under false or disposable details, and is growing lots of tomatoes or something in all the bedrooms under bright lamps and ventilation, which requires a lot of electricity. Small price to pay for good tomatoes though.

    • mmm tomatoes.
      .

  • The address on the bill was for my unit but it just said energy consumer (they didnt put my name).

This happens between vacancies. Ignore the invoice.

This was probably due to the electricity used when the place was empty, they don't usually disconnect just turn it off.

IF you are renting then it is the landlords problem, if you bought the place then it's your responsibilty from settlement date.

  • Merged from AGL's sent to my address

After the tenant moved out. AGL did not disconnect the power line but now sent the bill to my address with "Energy Consumer"
I didn't live at the property and have not use the power.
    What should i do?

    • Contact AGL and let them know you are the new tenant and the date you moved in.

    • haha I wrote the exact same question here ages ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/330376
Someone else did that too: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/404886

So dodgy if you ask me, if I remember correctly the advice I got was to ignore it. I think I got one more saying they could disconnect my electricity bill and never heard back from them for the rest of the year. I was odded out about the fact they would say that because I was with energy australia but nothing happened.

Anyway I think the point is that you never ever entered a contract with AGL so they can't charge you anything over it?

Someone on the last message did say though there is a possibility if you live in an apartment block it could be an extra power for water heating?

    • The last tenant was with AGL. They told me they have advised AGL that they have moved out. So i thought AGL will automatically disconnect the power after the noticed day.

      • I think AGL keeps the power on in the hopes they can scare the next person to move in to pay for the power in between and to stay with AGL. I'm no lawyer but I think its all just to trick people into paying more, I don't think you have to whatsoever, they just hope you do, instead of disconnecting themselves.

  • I am the owner of the property. Since the tenants moved out. I have shut the gate. The house was unoccupied until this day.

  • I searched and found ewon.com.au. i contacted them and they said don't pay. Hopeully i called the right service.

  • Update. Ewon called me and suggested that i should call AGL and tell them that i have a new retailer so they will adjust the bill because they have right to charge infrastructure whatever.

  • Guess because i am the owner?

  • I chat withan AGL online (probably from India)
I daid i have a new retailer and the meter reader will read at the address tomorrow. I gave the account number and she asked for the name. I said there is no name just Energy Consumer. She said if there is no name then no need to pay. Hmmm.
