  • sad, i like this store. I love borders even more because it is a great place to sit on the comfy couches and read for free.

This is the reason why they have to close because people like you go there and read for free.

      • +7

and more and more people learn about book depository

Actually, I think the 'try before you buy' concept works for Borders. All but 1 of the stores that are closing are A&R. The Borders stores are staying open, which suggests they do make money, or at the very least, break even.

        • +3

I believe borders has already entered voluntary administration. Perhaps it can be saved but obviously it is floundering if it has got to this stage

Borders stores here were doing okay until they were sold by Borders USA to raise cash for their struggling US chain. This sale ultimately failed to save the US chain anyway. But it also meant Borders here lost alot of advantages they had as part of the original global chain. They imported alot of books & cds from the US, rather than buy them here. So they had a really great range, & great profit margins as the group had massive buying power in the US.

Since it got sold it has been run entirely differently by the new owners. Hence the poorer stock range, higher prices, etc…

If you visit the Macquarie Centre store now, which was Borders Australia first store, and know what it was like when it first opened it is totally different. Their book range was fantastic. It was like a bricks & mortar version Amazons range. Now it is very uninspiring.

From experience I know I cannot buy alot of books/authors they did to stock there anymore. So it is not a destination bookstore anymore, the way it used to be. It is just a big space with a mediocre range.

        i lol'd irl

Couldn't agree more. I really love borders, particularly the parramatta shop. The atmosphere was great, including a coffee place inside. I think the shopping experience was the best in AU.

      • Well it's still there. Hot chicks and all.

All Borders except Rouse Hill, NSW are closing. Does anyone know if there are restrictions on using your gift vouchers there?

    • +3

I thought it was the other way around? I saw on their FB that Rouse Hill was closing?

      • My Bad, was typed late last night. Yes you are correct.

  • The Camberwell A&R is just across the road from a Borders that is about 3 times bigger.
I think even if they werent broke, was a matter of time that the A&R got shut anyways, I think.

    • +4

Indeed, I can't see how they can justify selling new release paper backs for $40 + in some instances

  • sad,but i like spend same money to buy more books from amazon.

    • had not but pretty sur ei will now spend the rest of the night reading the jokes and comic on theoatmeal.com lol

GOOOO book depository and its sweet free shipping <3

    • +1

i ordered book on 3rd of march, 3 of them. 2 said they would ship within 24 hours but still not shipped..not impressed so far.

  • Thats unfortunate. It might have been a good idea to convert these stores to paid membership libraries.
I'd rather join a quality local library with monthly fee than buy books online from overseas.
Then again the administrators probably know better.

    • Interesting idea, but not sure if it'd be sustainable. They've still got to pay rent, staff salary, electricity, ect. Plus an initial conversion cost would cost time & (I'm guessing) huge cash to change their systems.

  • there are some gift cards on sales (50% off) at cardlimbo for this.
however, you need to read the terms and conditions carefully…

  • Now I wonder where can I buy education textbooks.

  • When people go out shopping tomorrow, please chime in if they see any other A&R or the Rouse Hill Borders offering large discounts.

    Thanks!

    "book suppository" hehe

  • Surprised Broady had a book shop to begin with. People there can read?

    • All suburbs have people of all walks.
It's alright if you're just pointing out a stereotypical notion of Broady, but if you genuinely believe what your saying, -1 to you.

Sense of humour. Get one. ;)

… the only walk I associate with Broady is the 'right through' one ;)

(just kidding I don't know it)

        • What area in melb are you mxy?

Sorry, I jumped the gun with you Ash (N)

        • North Melbourne, moved from Lane Cove, Sydney six years ago. Its a good spot, just a 20 min walk from the city centre & Vic Markets & my kids schools are both a few minutes walk.

Where are u in Sydney? (If u see this).

See if u can answer in less than the nearly 5 days I took.

Post on Whirlpool indicates that the Perth city stores have 50% off as well

  • can we use gift cards on top of 50% off?

    • always the ozbargainer ;)

    • I just did. Yes they accept gift cards but you still have to spend same amount in cash/eftpos. I got $120 worth of books for $60. Paid $30 giftcard & $30 eftpos. Have now used up my A&R giftcard. Hooray!

Again, I did a price comparison with Amazon UK when I got home. I could have bought the same books delivered to Australia for about $50. But I had to use up the giftcard…

I bought 6 books from a Borders store last weekend when they had 40% off purchases of 4 or more. I was feeling kind of sorry for them… Then I checked on Amazon UK & found I could still have paid less by buying the same from them. No wonder Borders went broke when even at 40% off their prices are more expensive than Amazon!'

    Good bargain. Thanks malexane.

50% off is what they need, all stores, every day.

  • 50% off ereaders and i'm there!!!

    Included as well?

    • is it
      sisters planning to buy one

    • does not include ereaders - at least thats what the sign said at Hurstville NSW store

  • Thanks malexane ;)

  • Mental note: don't bother with any A&R stores not mentioned on the above list…I went to Miranda and it didn't have jack on sale…

  • Such a fabolous post

  • I just called the North Lakes store who confirmed they're doing the 50% sale. Heading over there now!

  • I went to A&R Wetherill Park, they had a good range bought myself 4 cook books. The stickered prices added up to approx. $130 and I paid $47. One of the books had $79 on the sticker but when she scanned it it was about $45 then 50% off that price, so effectively some books were more than 50% off.

  • Thanks for your post…but now I am $175 down!! Karingal Vic store also has the 50% off everything! Was busy in there…they said they will close when they have no stock left..and if that fails then in 2 weeks!!! Happy shopping!

  • Chermside, yes
    Brookside, no
    Stafford, no

Bought some new reference books and got a good deal.

  • I was at the Hurstville store today, it was pretty packed. Had to wait 40 minutes in line to the checkout.

    • Damn looks like no chance of me getting anything tomorrow then :(

  • Confirmed Perth A&R in the city has 50% off. Went in at lunch time… travel books almost wiped out, ditto computer and cooking books.

    • dunno why travel books would have gone, they still cost more even with the 50% off compared to online… the shelf was at least 3/4 full of travel books at Tuggeranong ACT store

  • Confirmed Adelaide Rundle Mall store has the 50% off storewide sale.

  • 50% off RRP should bring most books close to the price of books from Amazon.com, including air mail.

  • Newcastle mall has same deal but a pretty small shop and already been heavily picked over. As previously mentioned the 50% just brings them into line with book depository

  • Anyone been to Blacktown, Winston Hills, Mt Druitt, Liverpool yet?

    • Yes, went to Winston Hills on Saturday afternoon, looked like a bomb site. Managed to grab myself a few books though, including the AWW (Australian Women's Weekely) Cookbook for around $40, cheaper than anywhere else online.

  • Went to Garden City today, plenty of vampire romance fiction left there! :( Scored myself a Doctor Who book at half price though - last one in the store.
