Edifier Studio 2.0 Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers (R1700BT) $155 + Delivery (Free Shipping with Shipster) @ Kogan

910

Was gonna buy some speakers, found these on Kogan. They have pretty good reviews, on MWave and PCCaseGear they're 200. So $155 with free shipping seems pretty good.

Estimated shipping for me (Sydney) was ~$18 dollars which comes under the Shipster $20 limit. Might not always be the case though.

  • Only has RCA and 3.5mm outputs.

    • It's Bluetooth so you can virtually connect everything.

      • +3

I prefer to actually connect a thing or two.

        • +7

          back in my day……

          • +5

@follow: people had an appreciation for higher res ;)

      • +7

Although convenient, BT is lossy. Always look for an aptx or airplay capable speaker if you plan to stream 100% of the time.

        • is this aptx?

            • @Julius: whats are good aptx bluetooth bookshelf speakers?

              • @matt-ozb: Good question. I'm not too familiar with speakers, more focused on headphones/IEMs.

                Hopefully someone can chime in.

              • +2

@matt-ozb: There's some good AudioEngine speakers that support aptx. If you want to get everything from streaming FLAC then you'll need LDAC compatible speakers as this codec supports 990kbps. It is Sony's format and last time I looked there wasn't anything available in bookshelf form (in Australia at least), it was mainly centre speakers and the high end wireless headphones. You'll also need an Android phone as Apple doesn't support LDAC at present.

        • +2

          Always look for an aptx

You realise that aptx is also lossy right?

And to use it both devices must support it.

          • +1

@Diji1: seems hard to buy a current generation flagship smartphone without aptx

          • @Diji1: Oops, poor choice of words. AptX and Airplay are higher res. Still worth the jump for most people as both can handle CD quality at a minimum.

            • +1

@Julius: AptX definitely can't do CD quality. The bitrate of CD quality is more than 4x the max bitrate of aptX. None of the current Bluetooth codecs can manage CD quality bitrate.

              • +1

@ChadHominem: Oh really? Feel pretty bad then if I'm spreading false information. Speakers aren't my forte. I read from a few sources that AptX produced CD quality.

I've only tried Airplay through a homepod and the sound quality was great! Better than an bluetooth speak I've heard.

Would be open to learning more.

            • @Julius: .
              AirPlay is lossless.
              AptX is lossy.
Both are low res, ie. 44.1 kHz, 16bit, Stereo.

AptX HD is lossy, however, it is somewhat Hi Res, it can do 24bit, but limited to 48 kHz.

              • @DiSTURBED-oNE: Both are low res, ie. 44.1 kHz, 16bit, Stereo.
                Isn't this the CD quality?

          • @Diji1: There's also aptxHD now. Of course your phone/whatever has to have the gear to do it as well.

            • @EightImmortals: I think I was referring the aptxHD initially :P

That's the one that recently was released right?

        • I have Sonos One paired speakers and sound is amazing via airplay2

        • hooking up a Chromecast audio to this would be lossless, right?

    • +1

Only has RCA and 3.5mm outputs

I'm assuming you mean inputs but so what?

      • +1

        no digital input he/she means

There is noticeable difference in sound quality when you switch from RCA/3.5mm to a digital input, hence why i kept my 1280DB's

        • +1

Curious if you think it matters for speakers are are pretty cheap?

          • +2

@Presence: Exactly, people pretend to judge a product without considering its price against other products, I see the same mistake done about computer hardware reviews on the web.

          • -1

@Presence: Doesn't matter if it's cheap or not. If the hardware is medium to high end, then yes it will make a difference in sound quality.

I tried the 1280db with the digital Vs the RCA and noticed a difference in sound quality

            • @easternculture: the 1280db looks very nice, how do you hook them up to pc? i think the price is very similar and i would like to use a better sound setup thanks

        • no digital input he/she means

She doesn't care about digital inputs - only size matters.

        • I'd wager the money depicted in your avatar that the 1700 with an analogue signal sound a lot better than the 1280 with a digital signal.

  • +3

Much better than pc speakers (aka logitech)

    • Agreed

    • I found the Logitech THX speakers to be quite good.

    • How would you say these compare to the old version of the logitech z623? Been looking for an upgrade.

    • +1

I agree, though I haven't heard this exact model I replaced my Logitech Z5500's with a set of Edifier r2000db's and have never looked back. Fantastic speakers.

      • +1

My Z5500's are around 10 year old now, just waiting for the day they pass on.

These speaks are nothing compared to z5500's since I own both, but then they exist in different markets

        • Still rocking some creative speakers I bought almost 25 years ago. They last forever!

      • So the verdict is the Edifier R2000db > Z5500?

    • You've obviously never used or heard z623's

      • These are surprisingly good especially for the price and I am very much an audio snobbery.

        • I've had neighbors come from the end of the street and say to turn them down because of the noise

          • @woozcomp: Just because it can go loud doesn't mean it sounds good.

  • -1

    https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Speakers/2.0/68582-R1010…

Is cheaper here at $99, but delivery is extra ($16)

Edit - This looks like a lower version. Nvm

    • +2

      totally different product

    • The speakers look cheaper but if you want to save $50, then go for it.

  • Looks like some serious competition for Voll (unless their next version of the A44's come with bluetooth)

    • +1

Eh, the Voll is actually great, but their speakers in this rage aren't powerful enough. What's the point of sounding good if you can barely hear it. Probably all active speakers in this range aren't powerful enough for me.

      • I use similar size powered speakers with the computer and the volume is more than enough but if you want to entertain a big room, then you need speakers size 17" and above.

        • Yeah more for entertaining. But also I like the speakers to feel powerful at low volume or during quiet moments, even when they are right in front of me.

          • @AustriaBargain: Then you need a 2.1 configuration with a separate sub and 2 satellites.

            • @dealhunt: Yeah that's something to consider. Or just get even more powerful 2.0 speakers that go even lower than these ones might.

          • @AustriaBargain: I wonder how low volume can have any direct or indirect relationship with powerful?

            • @jpl: I believe he refers to low frequencies so you don't need to rise the volume to hear the power of the low notes.
For example to hear a decent bass with my cheap powered speakers I have to rise the volume too much and that would disturb other people.

        • 17" and above

          rip your neighbours

          • @harro112: The neighbours knew what they were getting themselves into when they rolled the dice and lived next to strangers.

  • These got suggested by a couple OzB'ers back on the deal on the 1280's at this price.

  • +1

Replaced my logitechs (which I was perfectly happy with) with a pair of these and it's like I am listening to different songs now they are so much richer.

    • +5

      Which logitech did you have?

      • +1

curious to know this as well

      • z506

        • +1

          damn… I have the z506's and I think they're bloody amazing

          • +6

@kakarot123: The z506s are OK for a cheap home theatre and boomy-doof-doof base. For actually sound quality they are…not good.

          • +1

@kakarot123: i used to own HS7 with woof (1k$ setup) and now i have to use z506 temporarily (due to moving house) i would say they are really good for their price.

  • Free shipping does not work if estimated shipping is over $25. :(

  • I got my $20 credit back then when they screw up SSD price on Amazon, now time to spend it. So $135 delivered with Shipster.

    • :/ I din't get my credit back when they screwed up my pre-order for Far Cry 5…

  • How would these compare to the bose companion 20?

  • Mmmm, I guess these would do while waiting for the Elac's to come down under at a reasonable price…

  • How do they compare to sonos ones or play 1s?

  • would these be ok for an entry level turntable setup?

    • +1

It should be ok also it depends on what is your meaning of $$$ entry level and what is the setup?

  • this or Pioneer MRX-3?

    • A "totally" different product…..

  • +5

Love all the advice from the superhumans in this thread that can hear beyond human ranges and are able to tell the exact bit rate of an audio track.

Sound is subjective but most of the audiophile information out there is built around information overload pushed by users and encouraged by companies in the sound game.

Speakers of this calibre will suit the vast majority of people for use in a bedroom and up to a medium sized living room. If they're directly attached to a PC these will do well. For a BT speaker they will still have more kick than a Google home for similar money.

    • +4

Exactly, you have people playing content off Spotify spending thousands on an AMP. 99% of the people out there will be ok with something like this. It's those Youtube guys that nitpick everything and will cause doubts in minds.

  • I’ve got the W9 from definitive technology.
I assume these would be similar?

    • I wouldn't bother updating. Definitive Tech is an American brand with a better pedigree than Edifier. The higher end DT stuff is made in the US but your W9 are probably made in China like the Edifier speakers and most other speakers produced primarily for the computer market.

        • your W9 are probably made in China like the Edifier speakers and most other speakers produced primarily for the computer market

Like it was already said above, people talk about quality without taking in consideration the price.
I'm more than happy with my $70 (on sale) Chinese powered speakers paired with the gaming computer.

  • Had a pair of Edifiers and they make really nice speakers, the sound was nice and clear, these look quite tasty for the price.

  • What is Kogans shipping like these days? Should I expect these by Christmas?

  • +2

I bought these 3 years ago for 200 delivered of ebay…

I mean there OK… not the best things iv heard…

if i could return them I would of.

  • +5

Okay, I ordered these speakers on expedited shipping and received them yesterday afternoon. Some thoughts…

Set-up: My speakers are connected via RCA to my OPPO HA 2, which then connects to the iPhone 8 by an Aux with the help of a lightning adapter. My OPPO is acting as a DAC and has been set high gain with no bass boost. OPPO amp volume is set at 50%. I have not EQed and have used the speaker's default settings.
Target Market: I have a small bedroom and the 1700bt is more than enough to satisfy my needs. Those planning to buy speakers for medium to large rooms should pay extra for the 2000db.
Build Quality: Chinese made is not always a bad thing. Many quality audio products are coming from China these days eg Fiio DACs, Moondrop Blessings, and Massdrop collabs. The speakers have a heft and feel very solidly built with a premium wooden finish. I chose the black version which blends in effortlessly amongst my other black electronics.
Sound Quality: Before I state my thoughts, I'd like to mention I've always been a headphones and IEMs guy. Please be nice. They have a very V-shaped sound, perfect for laid-back listening sessions. They are excellent for those interested in EDM, rock and pop genres. Good news for bassheads, these speakers have a decent amount of bass. Good thump but limited by a weak kick. Can't hear audio distortion to my music on default settings and when tuning the speaker's settings. Pretty good with mids and highs - vocals are detailed, smooth and clear, but doesn't do justice to female vocals. When listening to classical, provides decent separation.
    Verdict: Awesome buy for $150.

    • Awesome review.
But if my budget was that of the OPPO HA2, I looked to buy more expensive speakers even though as you say these Edifier's sound satisfy your expectations and I believe the build quality exceeds their price tag.

      • I'm more a headphone/IEM guy. I was looking for speakers that could provide ambient background music. The OPPO is reserved for more serious listening sessions with headphones.

  • +1

Bought these to replace my Logitech X-530 as I wasn't using the rear speakers on those.
Even without a sub these R1700BT sound better, give me bluetooth and more inputs so I can plug in my PC & PS4, and bluetooth my phone if needed.
Sound great, especially for this low price. Highly recommend

  • edit: nevermind…
