  • most of gold coast doesn’t have DAB and damned if i don’t know why ..

The antenna was placed in too good of a location, so they can't use the full power. https://www.radioinfo.com.au/news/brisbane%E2%80%99s-dab-dil…

      • thanks for finding that info …👍

Apparently GC will be getting its own DAB+ transmitter (probably Tamborine Mountain), ETA unknown.

basically becuase the radio stations outside the capital cities kicked up a stink that they'll lose their listeners to digital stations they pay the Govt a fair bit in licence fees.

So the feds in their infinite wisdom decided to cripple DAB, with low power transmission confined to capital cities. Poor reception (including in captial cities), along with internet radio/streaming pretty much killed it expanding.

IMHO you're better off using your phone & either your car's radio or a buetooth speaker.

      • there is a difference between data streaming and what data plan you have and some people still seem to chase cheapest sims ….and free to air which is …free.

reception is the issue and even at home in suburban melbourne it depends which part of the house gives constant reception ….

for country folk it’s not that regional stations wouldn’t do it, it’s the signal strength you need and a radio with enough buffer so that sound doesn’t breakup if weak signal,

i love dab ….when i get constant signal.

  • Hey, might be a silly question but does this kind of piggyback off your original radio or is it standalone? I have a grey import which doesn't tune into local radio stations. Will this let me listen to Sam Pang and Brownie again?

Depends on your car setup. Depending on whether you have a tape drive, aux in, bluetooth available on your headunit etc

      • My car does have bluetooth. So this will connect to bluetooth then my phone will connect to this device? Sorry not too good with these things. Also, will there be any loss of audio quality if I'm say streaming HQ music through Spotify?

I'd just grab an FM band expander. Any car audio shop can have it installed in about 10-15 minutes

  • DAB?

    • Digital radio

    • Only in capital cities.

  • antenna can be a bit of an issue to get a strong enough signal , and unlike am or fm where you just get bad sound if driving through bad coverage, dab drops in and out with longer delays as it buffer signal again….
it’s why country folk still have am radios.
i’d love dab in my car but am waiting for a cheap head unit and will dump existing player so i can use the car antenna.

but this is cheap if it works in your area reliably eg where you drive the most of frequent route.

  • From memory my Evo X had DAB and I couldn't tell the difference lol
