    Thanks op!

Will now have 4x 5l and 2x 1l for a car that takes 5.25-5.5l a swap including filter

That's the next four changes or 80,000kms taken care of! Though I intend to swap closer to 10,000km's a change

  • +1

good deal, but having trouble with checkout on their website at the moment. Anyone else having issues with Payment online?

  • Damn, not suitable for my Pajero Sport's turbo diesel with DPF :(

    • +2

I've got a DPF as well. I can swap mine out for $500 so I'm not buying into this low-SAPS argument. Besides, I feel better running a 40 vs a 30. Plus I do alot of high engine speed work.

What IS killing my DPF (just ran an engine check) is my failed glow plugs and relay. The whole she-bang has failed and it's pumping diesel into the sump because of failed regens. Plus getting up to temp in the morning takes ages.

Hence new relay and plugs for $210 (being flown in as we speak).

If anything is going to kill my DPF it won't be a high saps oil!

      • "failed glow plugs and relay" - did you run OBD2 to work this out?

        • Technically not… I hate relying on this (computers). I went through the physical symptoms and diagnosed it as failed glow plugs (very common for my motor). I then ran the OBD2, pulled the error code and confirmed it

Only out $210+labour to do the lot so I can't complain. That's for six glow plugs and a bosch relay.

          • @kronicmacstigator: Well done mate. Got a Hyundai CRD 2.2L that might need glow plugs I reckon, runs course when pushed and economy not as good as it used to be even after taking the car often of DPF burn off runs. Will run OBD2. Also there's a turbo leak the mechanic said. Dunno how to fix that…

Supercheap are also selling the Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30 (5L) Engine Oil $39.59 (was $65.99) [40% off] which is supposed to be suitable for DPF vehicles.

      • +1

Any idea how's Shell Helix compared to other brands e.g. Castrol, Penrite, Nulon for equivalent 5W-30 or 5W-40 oil for diesel engine with DPF?

        • +1

I used to be a Penrite fanatic. Been running Total for my Peugeot lately (factory recommended) but did the research and Helix ultra is meant to be the best of the best

        • +2

I use this for my bmw 320d with dpf….great oil and this is great price…i paid $52 for this will buy another 2…

  • +2

    Finally this is on sale!

  • How's this compare with Castrol edge??
Also they don't have 5w-30 in Ultra?? Bummer

    • +1

As others have said, try ECT C3. This DESTROYS Castrol Edge if reviews are anything to go by. Edge is just marketing.

    • +1

on BITOG (bob is the oil guy), Helix ultra consistently gives top used oil analysis results. I use this 5w40 in my Nissan V36, and even after 9k kms when I change it, still a brown colour. Castrol is black before half that interval. I know oil colour isn't the end all, but gives me peace of mind.

      PS thanks OP

    • +2

Shell Helix Ultra is top quality oil.

It's the recommended oil by Ferrari, Maserati, Dodge SRT etc. Same base oil but those manufacturer has a different additive package.

      • +1

Amen, even one made for Peugeot but try finding it here

  • "low friction formulation can achieve up to 1.7% fuel economy gain"
Claim: Full synthetic motor oil will increase fuel economy
    Conclusion: Myth
Test Results: The Sebring with 65,000 miles covered 23.19 miles per gallon on conventional 5W-30 motor oil and 22.74 mpg on a full synthetic motor oil of the same grade — a decrease of 1.97 percent.

    https://www.government-fleet.com/146789/mythbusters-fleet-ed…

    • Anyone who spends this kind of coin on engine oil isn't interested in getting a very small percent efficiency change

      • IMHO $36 for an oil that meets MB229.5 and BMWLL-01 (both some of the highest standards to meet) is a steal!

        • Of course it's a steal. Even full price I'd begrudgingly buy it. But at this price point it's a no-brainer

        • both some of the highest standards to meet

Those standards are simply to ensure the oil doesn't damage your car when Mercedes or BMW franchises service them. They aren't hard to meet at all, most oils on the market meet these standards.

  • Limit of 2 lol like they think they are doing everyone a real bargain

No one would ever pay full rrp

It’s on sale for $8 a litre when I can buy penrite everyday for $9 a litre

    • For my application I'd much prefer to run the Ultra and in fact only did my research a week ago. Penrite sells nothing I trust for my motor

      • What exactly are you trusting and in what application ??

        • I am trusting Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 in a PSA DT17 lion

  • Not sure where OP got the specification list for the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 but some like VW & Fiat seem to be missing.

    Specification: API SN/CF, ACEA A3/B3 A3/B4, VW 502.00/505.00, MB 229.5, (approved), BMW LL-01, Porsche A40, Fiat 9.55535.72 (meets), Renault RN0700/0710, Ferrari (approved), PSA B71 2296. Chrysler MS 10725, MS 12991.

    • Sorry for the confusion, there are two lists of specifications in the deal post (for the Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 and ECT C3 5W30).

I've edited the Specification headings to make it clearer :)

  • I normally put Penrite hpr5 into my 06 bk mazda 3. Would this be suitable?

    • +2

Mazda probably specs 5w30 as the ideal for your car. Being an '06 therefore likely you have a few extra kms on this car? I would say this would suit great, and 5w40 would still be within Mazda's factory oil specs anyway.

      • +1

Thanks that's what I was thinking
Hpr5 is also a 5w 40 oil and runs just fine

    • +1

There is more to oil than just weight but it should be very suitable

  • Can I BYO this oil to the service center? any one knows any service center in Sydney that can do the BYO oil change? thanks

  • +7

I'm going to fill up my Victa with this for fully sick grass cutting.

    • +3

Careful of the extra HP's bro 🤙

    • +1

      I hope you have a ride-on lawnmower.

    • +1

The mower will probably die before the oil

  • Guys, where can I check if this is compatible with my car? is there any website to tell that?

Also, where in Melbourne can I hire the mechanics who are ready to use my supplied oil and filter, and just charge me for the labor?

    • Check the manual. Few mechanics would do that? Why not change it yourself?

    • +1
      • thx mate! 5W-30 it is. Will keep an eye on next sale.

What is the best way to search for mechanics providing BYO oil & parts and just charging for labor?

Last time I asked someone if I can provide my oil/filter, guy said yes, sure, but that wouldn't make any price difference. WTF

        • Maybe just call a few local mechanics and see who will help?

  • +1

Are there any real differences between oils if you change them frequently? I change my own oil on my 2011 Camry (140,000kms now) every 10,000kms or 9 months whichever comes first along with the OEM Denso filter I get from Toyota. So far I've used Castrol Edge 5W-30, Nulon Synthetic (non Euro one) 5W-30 and now Shell Helix HX-7. Any real diffs between those and stuff like Helix Ultra or the exuberant Mobil One?

The way I see it as long as the engine is well lubed and there is no sludge there would be much of a muchness anyway for everyday driving (not track).

    • I think a little difference between brands & quality, but not a whole lot. Check out some used oil analysis on bitog.com

      • Isn't it mostly how hot an engine burns to and the viscosity of the oil? That is, the higher the temp and more viscous the oil is the better?

        • +3

There is a whooooole lot of that plus more going on with engine oil. Base oil quality, additive pack, NOACK, TBN, flash point, cleaning capability, wear protection, HTHS, film strength, load carrying capacity. Most importantly - good vibes.

          • +2

@Wizballs: End of the day it's a Camry……before this I had a 1992 Camry (drove it till 2013 when it wasn't really economical to upkeep it). I used to be lazy and changed every year regardless of mileage and it still ran nicely with no sludge in the end.

    • +11

u could piss in the Toyota Engine, and it'd still run like a champ ;)

      • +4

So true… but, their engines are getting more fussy these days. The 2019 Corolla uses 0w-16

        • +1

Oil getting thinner all the time….that 0W16 is about as thin as the aforementioned piss that may be used in some engines :)

          • @Wizballs: deals on 0w-20 oil are scarce. I haven’t even seen 0-16 on the shelves

    • +1

Do you call the dealership for the OEM filter?

      • Funny you mention this…. I use good quality aftermarket oils…..but always run stock filters

        • Good enough to be honest. Made in Thailand Denso crap.

          Also, yes, I just call.

      • +1

Not a damn chance. They are cheap crap. I myself run Mann from Germany.

Find a decent filter and stick with it. OEM are generally a cheap filter at a premium price

        • +1

I support good quality aftermarket filters. They should have have anti-drainback as standard which is good. I also recommend trying to find one with a bypass pressure similar to oem specs

      • Get the Ryco top of the line from Supercheap while it is on sale. Problem solved.

        • I've never seen it on sale execpt that one time where everything was 20% off. The stock is always empty for my camry filter

          • @Oz8argain: yeah that's what i meant by sale, I recalled there was some times it went for 25% or 30% off though.

Toyota engines aint that picky on oil filter, if yours is still taking the "screw-on" type oil filter instead of those new annoying "open the casing, replacing the filter element and the inside O-wing" type, you could try to get one size up and it shouldn't be a problem.

            • @siuol: mine is the filter element in the casing under the car and requires special adapter to unscrew

Was like $16 a month ago, cleaned out my local

  • I have a diesel 4wd. If i run a full synthetic can i increase by time between oil changes? Currently changing oil every 5000km using castrol magnatec.
I am going to be doing a xmas road trip of about 10000km and thinking of putting one of those long lasting ryco oil filters in amd maybe go a full synthetic just so i dont have to do a change away from home.

    • Can you do it….sure no probs. Should you do it, dunno???

      • Yeah. I really would like to do some oil sample testing and have some certainty but not sure i will have the time now. Just did an oil change yesterday so got about 3 months before my next change right when i plan on road tripping.

        • Call me someone who likes old fashioned's, but I always chose to run diesel specific oils in two past common rail diesels… an Isuzu (no DPF) and a beta romeo (DPF POS).

I always found it hard to get oils in the MB229.51 & LL04 specs tho (Merc & BMW diesel specific specs). And therefore I usually ended up with a 10w40 of some variety. 10w40 was never a problem starting in Brisbane temperatures, even though they both recommended 5w to ensure easy starting with common rail. I think a 5w is probably required more so in very cold climates.

          • @Wizballs: Its weird for me cause i dont understand how the castrol oils recommended are a diesel magnatec 15w40 and the castrol edge is 5w30. Both differnet oils at different weights. Ive been pretty happy with the magnatec so far but open to trying anything that might be better.

            • @DarwinBoy: What is the recommended service interval? I don't run past that even with synthetic oils…
I say run something that has decent/required specs and you should be okay

    • What is it actually? Some motors love it… others… not so much

      • Navara with a yd25.

        • Hmm… generally oil quality these days (specifically looking at the ultra) determines whether you need to change the oil or not. I can't see the harm in going to a full synthetic. That being said, this thing can move gunk out of a motor so if shit starts leaking it's just revealing existing engine damage.

You could definitely get away with an extended change

  • +1

Love a bargain but for those of us with old cars something around the $20 mark would make more sense (eg. Magnatec).

    • +1

Wouldn't run that if you paid me, made that mistake once. Even the slightly lower Helix is a bargain (but the HX3 is pretty woeful if you ask me)

  • +1

thanks OP picked it up today for ~ $30 after getting the free $5 for signing up to the club and ~ 70c cashrewards

  • Getting some problems submitting the order atm. Paypal is giving me "success false sid "payment"" and CC is clearing the details when i submit order.

    • same :(
this was perfect timing too - needed to change oil in the car!

  • I have a service coming up in 5Ks.
I already have a Penrite HPR5 5w-40 in stock but I am tempted by this.
This is for Toyota Aurion 2008 @ 145Ks at the moment and it is also dual fuel with LPG and Petrol.
What's the recommendation this or Penrite?

    Regards

    • For Aurion the oil should be 5w-30 or 10w-30.

      • Yes, you are right.
However, these can be run as well confirmed on both Penrite and Shell's website and I have been running HPR5 for 25Ks now (2nd swap at the moment) without any issues.
        Just curious about this oil.

  • FYI, Nulon has recently opened oil testing to the public: https://www.engineoiltest.com.au/product/oil-test-kit/
