Data Signal on The Train

I am on Optus, can hardly use data on a moving train from inner west to city to north shore. Music streaming interrupts, gaming or video streaming is almost impossible. My signal is often H+ and occasionally 3G.

However, I often see people video calling or playing games on the train, are they all on Telstra?

I would have to know the specific train (and carriage) to be able to assess which mobile carrier those passengers were using.

Or, perhaps they have downloaded the videos / games to their device.

and i would also need to know the weather, wind direction, what you were wearing too

Don't forget the position of the sun, sun flares, alignment of the planets and daily horoscope….

        • Planets have daily Horoscopes?
          (who knew?)

wear less or wear nothing and i guarantee you will get very strong "signals"

It varies by train line. On one certain line, I get dreadful Telstra and awesome OPTUS, but get onto another line, and Telstra is King….

  • I thought the 25000 volts 10 foot over your head had something to do with it.
last time I was in a train the GPS wasn't working to good

      Did you get lost ?

i'm with vodafone and there are certain dead zones on the way to work and its different depending on the direction of travel

    but generally speaking for me

around Canterbury when you go under the bridge/hurlstone park (sometimes patchy)/Dulwich hill (sometimes)/Marrickville (just before arriving/under bridge)/Petersham (sometimes)/St Peters/between Wynyard & Milsons point just before leaving tunnel/North Sydney @ certain spots only

Central is hit and miss…seems it depends how many other people are waiting for trains

drop off depends on how long you are there for and also when on the train you sit
ie around Canterbury if i sit at the head of the train…i get badly interrupted vs sitting at back end of train i don't notice much of a disruption at all

so if the timing is right i would not notice any issues watching youtube
maybe it auto adjusts lower quality for a few seconds

games…depends on what the game is and how critical it is to be always online
ie i wouldn't play clash Royale/clans during certain stops

    • agree -> Petersham (sometimes)/St Peters are bad.
i dont get it. they are inner city area how come signal can be bad

      • Petersham is weird because its worst going away from the city

going into city i seem to get better signal

st peters is bad both directions
and unlike most stations its, in and around the station

    • Bardwell Park on the East Hills line is a dead zone for both Optus and Telstra.

  • For Sydney I'm on Telstra, if I remember correctly going West I usually don't have much issues (up to parramatta at least), in fact I think I remember taking a phone call from parra to Burwood without any issues the whole way through.

Going North though (at least to Chatswood) I always lose data connection part way through and stops working.

I could be wrong though but I imagine taking calls are different to using data slightly in how its handled which might change things a bit as well.

Around Strathfield (Sydney) Optus is rubbish - you cannot use it. Telstra however works - not fantastically - but good enough.

    • +1

exactly, music stops when i pass Strathfield.

      • +1

If you change to Telstra you will have better reception in that area

    • ^this

  • From memory, Optus seems to have more congestion around the city circle than telstra or voda. With all 3 I tend to have a drop in signal in the middle of the bridge, and going north out of north sydney station. don't really notice any issues elsewhere.

  • I'm on Telstra and I always lose data connection on the Harbour Bridge

  • I'm with Kogan and lost my data connection between Riverwood and just before Wolli Creek. I remember Optus/Telstra was the same, Voda was a bit better.

    • +1

agree. those areas are just napping area ie better sleep than browsing

      • I usually quickly load the web novel I want to read before I get to Riverwood lol

    • My data is perfectly fine at Wolli Creek (Telstra - Samsung S8)

      • Yeah it works again once I reach Wolli Creek.

  • In Melbourne I used to have dead spots with Optus that Kogan doesn’t have. There’s also some dead spots on all networks. In the loop the signal works fine if it’s off peak, but more people = a more congested network. And this was true for both Optus and Kogan.

  • but try go on the same route on weekends you will get much better signal.
it means, when many people around are using internet, signal/speed will drop. am i right?

    • really? I never notice that… unless I just assume it's dead and just give up before trying.

      • try when less people on the train ie night/weekend you will be surprised

  • welcome to australia!

  • I find it is very subjective. In Barangaroo Telstra has congestion, voda is fine. Totally the opposite at Wolli creek. It depends on the congestion, and I guess lots of Barangaroo banksters get Telstra corporate phones, and lots of wolli creek international students loading up Kogan and lebara.
The only way to be sure is to buy some prepaid sims and try for your circumstance, and try again if it changes over time.

  • "are they all on Telstra?"
No. Telstra is crappier than people think. It's only advantage is when you go outside a metro area. I got better reception in the Adelaide CBD with Virgin than I do with Telstra.
