I wonder if sdyney has the same stock

    • +4

i dont think so with the amount of Sydney alcoholic population.

    • +2

I was looking at these at Costco Crossroads over the weekend and the Yamazaki 12 yrs and Distillers Reserve was the same price.

  • Very good price!

  • How much are they normally?

    • +1

      Dan Murphy

      Yamazaki 12yrs - 250

the rest are sold out… he yeah its a bargain.

  • delicious

  • The value of that Hakushu 12 yr will skyrocket once it's discontinued.

    • Maybe, but you can't legally sell it as an individual. At least not in QLD

      • There are resellers that will sell it on ebay for you in exchange for a commission, have not done it myself though.

        • Good to know

        • do you have details? what would i search in google to find ebayer sellers doing this?

          • @Raheen: I think I just googled something like 'Melbourne Whiskey Reseller' and I also just checked out eBay listings and worked backwards from there. Here's an e-mail I received from one company I contacted, as you can see commission is quite high.

            to me

            Hi cheaplikethebird,

We require photo's of the box and the bottle.
We need to know how much you would like to list it for.
We would require the bottle here while it is listed with us, shipping is at your cost.
our commission is 30% of the sale price, this includes shipping to the buyer.

If you require any other information please don't hesitate to contact me.

  • Any idea how many in stock?

  • +2

Great deal. I wish they were allowed to sell alcohol in SA!

  • How much do these sell for in Japan?

    • -4

      Probably like $30-40.

    • same if you can find it…

    • Very difficult to find in Japan.

      • @risto
        Just curious why?

        • Because Japanese whisky has skyrocketed in popularity, and the distilleries are playing catch up.

Hibiki 12 and 17 have been discontinued so they can produce more of the 21.

        • They're not that hard to find in Japan - i worked in a bar over there, they would cost around 30-80 over there.

          • @Jimmycfc: Distiller's reserve sold for about $120 at the distillery. I doubt the $80 for 12 yr old is anything resembling recent activity. In any case, $120 on Scottish Whisky will grab something quite amazing and equal in every way.

          • @Jimmycfc: when were you are bar tender in japan?

          • +2

@Jimmycfc: It's been getting harder and harder each year.
When I first moved to Japan 3 years ago, you could find Yamazaki 12 for $50ish, Nikka 18 Taketsuru was about the same (and my personal favourite).
1 year later Nikka started pulling anything aged to play catchup, Suntory doing the same.
It started almost getting impossible to find them in store, and price was going up, my tactic was to find little old lady stores in remote areas and hope they had old stock at old prices (got a Hibiki 17 for $100 mid last year)
I was running a bar and even distributers were getting low or very expensive.
To be honest I think the prices are getting out of hand, grab a nice scotch for half the price and wait till these get back to realistic prices

            • +4

@smoothymcmellow: Completely agree - Japanese whiskey was a great buy 10 or maybe even 5 years ago, but now it's just not as good value for money as Scotch, and increasingly so with many of our own.

        • Massive demand outside of Japan. Strong demand inside Japan. They don't even sell it at the distillery (I was there in February). They only sell the non-aged version (distiller's reserve). I couldn't find it anywhere. And I asked people who should have known where to find them also. Not easy!

          • @[Deactivated]: You wanna go to an actual whisky shop next time, it will be like Disneyland for you haha.

            • @Jimmycfc: what whisky shops did you have in mind. i'll be going next week and would love some input

              • @Archi: Best place for mine is a shop called "La Cave de Yamaya". Look for it on google maps, one in Akasaka.

              • @Archi: Also honestly look at buying Scotch/Gin/Vodka instead whilst in Japan.
The prices are crazy cheap, some of the best in the world. The Jap whiskey price will be inflated, those won't be.
Try the jap whiskey at a bar

                • @smoothymcmellow: there is a couple of jap gins I wanted try..

jap whisky is way too expensive, there are a few I like that aren't the main brand.

but if I can get some at a reasonable price like what @jimmycfc says he is getting it which I seriously doubt, then I guess there is no harm.

bought hibiki 17 this time last year at a good price in Kyoto. curious if I come across anymore next week

                  • +1

@Archi: I left in February and i could get normal Yamazaki for around $35 and if i wanted there was a whiskey shop in my town that was selling 12 year Hakushu for $70-85. I lived in Kagoshima so i dont know Tokyo/Osaka prices

                    • @Jimmycfc: just googled kagoshima, that's a really nice place. I wont be travelling that far south this time. certainly prices in larger cities isn't as good as that

                  • @Archi: I find the Suntory whiskys are quite expensive, granted you can actually find some. Last time I was there I could only find Nikka whisky so I bought some. I can highly recommend Nikka from the barrel and Coffey Malt, both at about 4000JPY.

                    • @klonky: I have the nikka, and have tried the coffee malt, cant say I like that one.

        • Not hard to find if you know where to look and can read/write/speak enough Japanese, I have stock pilled 30 Hakushu 12, a dozen Yamazaki 12, 16 Hibiki 17, dozen Hibiki 21…got quite a few Nikka as well as I'm guessing they will follow Suntories led, sitting on quite a paper profit when ever I decide to offload.

          • @Raheen: I have a brother who lives in Tokyo. Speaks/reads/writes japanese but not into whiskies. Asked him a couple of times to find me some hibiki 17s and other aged statements but obviously did not know where to look. Any tips?

    • They're more expensive than here a lot of the time! Before the price boom they were routinely cheaper here anyway.

    • weird, looks like around $250 https://search.rakuten.co.jp/search/mall/%E5%B1%B1%E5%B4%8E/
      guess its popular everywhere

on the other hand, i picked up a bottle of fuji sanroku from a japanese supermarket for under $20. dan murphys has them for $130.

and thats not even counting the bargain 6 litre whiskeys they have for around $30. that stuff looks dangerous

  • anyone know if these are available at lidcombe costco?

  • +1

Incredible deal on the 12 Yamazaki. Absolutely annoyed they don't sell alcohol in SA.

  • Hey OP, do you know the stock levels at docklands? I am after 12yr yamazaki

    • There were 6 of Yamazaki 12yr old in total, By 11am 2 were gone. Not sure current status.

  • Think i already know the answer, but not selling in QLD?

  • Almost on par with Donki's price

  • Yamazaki 12 is gone, I'm here now

    • was there any 12 hakushu left?

      • At the time of posting there was

  • +3

    Compared to Japan:
    * Hakushu 12yo - good deal for $149.99. About the same price in Japan.
    * Yamazaki 12yo - ok deal for $169.99. Possible to get this for ~$115 in Japan (if you are lucky).
    * Yamazaki (NAS) - bad deal for $109.99. Easy to get for $55 or less in Japan.

    • I'm pretty sure it is increasingly hard to find the Hakushu 12yo anymore, even in Japan.

    • Out of curiosity, do you the market price for Yamazaki 18, Hakushu 18, and Hibiki 17 ?

      • +1

Probably $400+ for Hibiki 17 and $1000+ for the others judging from online prices.

    • Was there recently and did not see yamazaki for less than about 180. Same goes for hakushu.

    • Where can we find Japan prices to compare to? Is there a website for this? thanks

  • +2

    Damn you QLD Government!!!!

  • I bought 2 x Hakushu 12 yo before noon at Docklands and there were 10 bottles left

    • +2

was there just now. All Hakushu 12 and Yamazaki 12 are gone, saw a group of potentially (pretty sure) ozbargainers with at least 6 bottles of either. Beats me to it

I think they have 1 x Hibiki Harmony left, and 10 x Hakusu (NAS) left. Not sure about Yamazaki (NAS)

      • I saw that as well :(
I ended up getting the last hibiki harmony for $99, so at least it wasn't a complete waste of time driving down that way

  • +1

Anyone knows if there are stocks in Ringwood?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Would like to know as well! And Moorabbin

  • -4

Any one know how these go with Coke, or is it more of s Sprite type whisky?

    • Stick to beer without coke or sprite!

  • Epping has no stock )-;
Only docklands and Moorabbin the staff told me.
Devastated as they are too far out of the way…

  • No more Yamazaki 12 at Moorabbin, they had one bottle of distiller's reserve left. They also had Hibiki Harmony, Chita 12 and possibly some Hakashu distiller's left.

  • You can sometimes get Yamazaki 12 at Dan Murphys but they are selling at $199.

    • they are selling at $249.99

  • Def none in Auburnon, just checked.

  • Tried at several large chain hotel bars in California to buy Japanese whisky and they just gave me a funny look . Finally tracked some down at Momofuku in Vegas, started at $30 USD/ shot, so I just waited until I got home.

  • +1

None in Docklands, checked at 5pm.

  • None at Moorabbin. Wow what a deal on these bottles though. The Hakushu 12s are selling for at least +$300 retail.

  • Oops… QLD got any?

  • $169 for the Yamazaki 12yo is pretty much standard pricing in Tasmania LOL. Getting ripped interstate!!

  • +1

I'm here at Costco Marsden Park. Heaps here. Does anyone want them? Buyers pay postage obviously. I'm leaving here in 10mins
