    Cheaper from uMart

FYI: this is the one with the main buttons in a stupid place

  • Harmony Companion - the one without the LCD but still works with Logitech Hub - is superior IMO. Thinner, lighter, and because no LCD lasts for months (years?) on a button cell battery.

But it doesn't have an LCD.

        • And cannot do troubleshooting (for example, amp didn't turn on when you started the "Watch TV" activity)

That's not really a problem, when you first set an activity up,, it tests it and asks if everything has worked.

          And has no IR

Not sure what you mean, it has IR Blasters.

          • @Scab: The Harmony companion remote does not have ir, the hub does. The hub must be stationary. Maybe not everyone wants to use their remote in multiple rooms (I admit I'm strange), but even in the case of wanting to use the remote for something like controlling the a/c (in case the main remote was lost), it can be nice to have a remote that has ir built-in.

        • The entire point of the Harmony remotes is to remove the need to control individual devices by using activities. If you want to troubleshoot, which shouldn't be frequent, then you can use the app. There's something wrong if you are constantly troubleshooting the setup.

IR isn't a biggie as the hub has that capability with IR built in and the ability to also use external IR emitters if you need help with positioning. The remote uses RF which is superior. In fact if you're having the issues that need the screen to debug issues, it's probably because you're using IR from the remote and the command failed because the remote wasn't pointed in the correct direction given IR requires line of sight, something the Hubs RF helps solve in conjunction with the IR being fixed in its location.

We have the Touch controller and the Smart Control both hooked up to the same hub and certainly we find the basic remote to be far better day to day. Only tradeoff we've really had to make is 6 activities isn't enough to capture all the consoles I have hooked up to the TV, so we need to access the least commonly used ones via an app since the basic remote can only map 6 activities. That or we use Google Home or Home Assistant + Homekit to issue voice commands to control the home theatre which can be handy.

          • @Smigit: I let the kids use the companion remote. When they lose it, I can use the Ultimate (which also controls devices in our bedroom via ir). Sometimes, things just get in a funky state, my wife can follow troubleshooting on the remote screen. They each have their purpose.

  • Have lost our old air-con control which branded as Mitsuco, anyone can suggest a remote that can pair up with the air-con? Thanks in advance

    • Have a look at Sensibo.

      https://sensibo.com

It controls your AC and provides ‘smart home’ capabilities.

      • Broadlink models are similar and much cheaper. The ozbargain way.

        • I’ve got Broadlink and the app on iOS is so crappy that the whole device is practically useless.

Sensibo is not just a remote but it also has temp sensor, proximity, and other things. It’s a different thing altogether.

When I lost mine, I bought a universal A/C one on eBay for about $6 delivered. Haven't tested it though, as I found the original but the seller seemed solid.

      • Don't think universal work for remotes with an LCD screen?

        • I'm not sure, sorry. I did a bit of research and was pretty sure it would work. Unfortunately, I don't remember if the replacement had an LCD or not.

        • The harmony can learn ir commands from your existing lcd a/c remote (assuming ir), but it works a bit different. For example, if your a/c remote is set on cooling and 23 degrees, and you "learn" the temp down button, the remote is not actually learning the command for setting the temp down a degree. Rather, it's learning the command for telling the a/c to be on, in cool mode, at 22 degrees (remember, it was at 23 until you pressed temp down). So you'd have to map buttons (easiest to use onscreen soft buttons) for commands like "23 Cool", "22 Cool", "21 Heat", "22 Heat", and of course "Off". Not sure if fan settings are sent as "Fan High" or "Cool Mode, 22 degrees, Fan High". You'll have to experiment, but it can be done.

          • @josetann:

The harmony can learn ir commands from your existing lcd a/c remote

My harmony won't work with my AC at all.

And from what I've read, it doesn't work with most of the ones with an LCD.

            • @Scab: Are you learning commands from the original remote? Works for me on multiple units. You do need the original remote, they're not in the database.

              • @josetann: Yes, it won't learn any commands from the original remote.

Here's where Logitech say it doesn't work too well

                https://community.logitech.com/s/question/0D55A000077L31HSAS…

                • @Scab: One tip. Does it recognise it initially but ask you to repeat the keypress? If so, remember that you're not actually having it learn "temp down one degree", you're having it learn "cool setting, 22 degrees". So if the lcd remote said the a/c was on, cooling, and at 23 degrees, and you pressed the temp down button to set it to 22, to recreate you'd need to put it back to 23 (while not letting the harmony see the ir) and then press temp down for the harmony to see. Sounds more confusing than it is, in use it'd go:

                  • Prepare Harmony to learn new "Cool 22" command.
                  • On existing remote (with display showing a/c on, cooling to 23), press temp down button one time.
                  • If Harmony did not see command or asks you to repeat, point a/c remote away while covering ir (so Harmony can't see it), press temp up to go back to 23. Then point it at Harmony and press temp down button.

That assumes the lcd remote is ir and the Harmony can learn it. It's worked on all the units I've tried with, some name-brand some not, and even a portable unit. You just have to realise that the remote is not sending commands like "temp up", it's sending the entire config each time. You can verify this is the case. Turn the a/c off. Take remote to another room, turn it on. Go back to the a/c, press temp down. It'll turn on and start cooling to the temp shown on the remote, even though it missed the "turn on" command (which as you now know, was actually a "cool setting, 23 degrees" command).

                  • @josetann:

                    Does it recognise it initially

                    No, won't even learn on/off.
Tried numerous times, with short and long press and distance from hub.

                    It's a 2y old kelinator, so it's not a weird model.

                    • @Scab: If it saw it once and asked you to press again, then I'd re-iterate what I said (you're not teaching it the command "on"). But if it's not seeing it at all, that's a different issue. If you were bored and positive it's IR, you could try learning with a different learning remote, then using THAT to try to teach the hub (sometimes they're picky and don't see each other well).

But yeah, not officially supported, so we can't complain if it doesn't work.

                      • @josetann:

If it saw it once and asked you to press again

Doesn't recognise any button preseses whatsoever.

  • Is this old stock, thought Logitech stopped making these a while ago?

    • +1

      Yeah this has been discontinued.

  • I have this remote and love it.

  • I had one of this but upgrade to the Ultimate not long after. The only thing I don’t like on this is the screen resolution and slow performance.

  • +1

I'm a big fan of the Harmony 650, mostly due to the abundance of programmable physical buttons and the great layout. I have 2 and they even did a great job of emulating the TiVo remote.

I wonder if this would be a major step up.

    • I'm wondering the same

    • Got that remote too and I'd think this would be a step down due to over flashiness

    • +1

I came from a 650, had it for years. For me this is a massive step up, mai ly because the hub does most the work. I used to have lots of issues with missed commands and devices being left out of sequence. There is no need for line of sight with this set up.

The hub seems to know the state of all my gear a bit better (remembers), and as such the experience is much cleaner and more wife friendly.

It also talks to my Google home so that's cool. I can say good morning google and it automatically turns on the stereo and starts playing radio national at breakfast. I can say I'm going out or goodnight and the whole lot turns off.

It's not even gimmicky in my opinion, as it just works.

      • Thanks for the reassurance - I pulled the trigger and got one, which wasn't easy as the stock is almost gone. Even some of the stores showing stock actually have it on hold for someone and won't honour the on-line sale, even if you have paid in full and the person on hold hasn't.

I'm trying to understand the value of Google Home compatibility with this remote. I have a few Google Home Mini's scattered around the house (although I don't home automation), but why would you want the remote to do something you can do with your voice?

  • Im sticking with my trusty 650 tried most upmarket models.

    • Including this one?
