Really tempted but biggest negatives on reviews are v poor battery life and a crappy touchpad - doesn't sound great for an ultraportable computer to need to be plugged in all the time. Oh, and also fan running all the time and v hot at the top rear of the computer…
Uggh - so many negatives, but such a beautiful device…. I must resist.

    • Stay strong my brother!

    • +9

Poor battery life? Crappy touchpad? Fans constantly running?

      Sounds like typical HP.

As someone who’s had to endure two of them for work…

      • +3

Seconded, I feel like I'm working in a power plant or something when my HP pavilion decides that it suddenly needs to cool down on this super intensive twitch stream i'm watching
doesn't help that its coolsense software is stupid as hell

        • For what it’s worth, it’s why I bought a notebook with a CoreM processor.

Sure it’s nowhere near as punchy as others but not having a fan makes it run silent. I’m happy to take a performance hit for the sounds of silence.

I bought one of these on Sunday. Waiting for delivery. Negatives include average battery time, heat and noise. On the other hand I'll get a Surface clone, bundled with pen (so-so) and keyboard (very good) with 16gb RAM and 1tb SSD for $1200 after TRS and cashback, from a local seller. That's a really good price, and far better than anything else I could find on a similar specced device. I posted it as a deal on Sunday, but it went out of stock shortly after. It's now back in stock on back order, so hopefully delivery isn't too delayed.

  • Really tempted, but all these negatives are making it seem that my money is better put towards a Surface that won't end up tied to an outlet.
    But that sweet, sweet 16GB RAM & 1TB HDD…

    • Of what use is a computer with great specs if it has the issues people have described? I'd rather have half the storage and RAM if the computer was reliable.

      • +2

Well it's more useful than a quiet computer with a nice touchpad that doesn't have enough ram or disk space for what you need…

        • But you wouldn't buy a computer with insufficient storage for your needs in the first place. If I am spending that much money on a convertible, I would expect it to have great battery life and good thermals.
The question is - are you willing to put up with the cons?

          • +3

            @albert0pia:

If I am spending that much money on a convertible

But you're not spending much money considering the specs and features. Of course there are going to be trade offs. The equivalent Surface pro model is > $3000 and doesn't come with the keyboard or pen.

The HP is still going to have a few hours battery life. Sure it's not 13+ hrs, but for a lot of people it will be enough.

If you looked at an equivalent priced Surface Pro with keyboard and pen, it would probably be an m3 processor with 128GB storage and 8GB ram. Now that might be a great device for someone that needs long battery life and not much processing power, but it's clearly not as capable as this HP

That said, I own an older model Spectre and it does have crappy battery life and the suspend/resume function is basically broken. These are not premium devices on par with a Macbook or Surface despite their appearance and spec. But I bought it as I needed a windows machine with touchscreen for testing (it's not my primary device) - and for that purpose it was great.

    • But that sweet, sweet 16GB RAM & 1TB HDD…
Hopefully it would be a 1TB SSD.

      • +1

        My mistake :)

But that sweet, sweet 16GB RAM & 1TB NVMe SSD goodness…

  • +1

Get this? Or a Xiaomi Noteboook Pro that I have been eyeing out which is probably cheaper than this and seems to have better specs? No local support or warranty though.

    • Link? :)

    • I’m in the same boat but looking at the xiaomi air. Thoughts?

  • +3

It's price vs features (same old story).

The negative reviews have put people off buying at full price. Now HP are clearing them out.

There are some positive reviews out there though. Wired mag recommends it over the Surface, for example.

Also have to remember that reviewers were basing their judgement on full RRP. I don't even know how much more you would pay for the equivalent Surface but it is definitely out of my budget.

    • Exactly, FOR THE PRICE it is insane value. You seriously cannot expect Surface Pro 5 (aka 2017) or Surface Pro 6 performance/thermals, when this is half the price.
It is actually an incredible machine for the price.

  • +1

Great machine, Ive got the i5 512gb. Love it.
    Great battery and awesome keyboard.
    Light and sturdy

    Would definitely buy this

    • What's the typical day to day battery life for you ? :)

    • +1 for my experience. i5 Processor helps battery life over an i7 I reckon.

  • +3

I've gone through 4 replacements of these so far within less than a year…

    • Is this for a single macine or multiple machines??.. or out of how many machines??

      • purchased from harvey norman. I replaced at harvey norman twice due to overheating and loud fan whine problems. Next I had to go through hp service to get a replacement due to speakers malfunctioning. And then my last replacement with hp service was for constant BSOD issue due to CPU getting fried (thermal issue). So all hardware malfunction issues.

    • -4

That might be a you problem and not a HP problem tbh
They're not premium but I feel that they're built to last

      • Actually, it is not a "me problem", as the HP tech who replaced my device the last 2 times informed me that they've been getting numerous requests for replacements due to hardware faults. to a point that the last time I needed mine replaced, they ran out of stock for 2+ weeks.

    • Not exactly sure why someone has negged my comment. Simply stating fact from personal experience with the device.

  • +1

Would this purchase improve my quality of life ?

  • -1

    DDR3? Oops… Almost perfect.

  • Great price for hardware. You can try to lower resolution for better battery life.

  • I agree, HP don't seem to be well designed or reliable. I have an Elitepad 900…on the 3rd or 4th one now (was a while ago so can't remember if they swapped it out 2 or 3 times!) as the first 2 or 3 kept failing or had design faults (screen flicker etc) that couldn't be resolved. On the upside the HP team in Oz were great and always helped out but the product just wasn't fit for market…HP seemed to rush it to Prod without adequate testing.

    • You cannot equate your experience with a completely different product to this one, or accross their range.

I've had experience with two HP Spectre laptops, and they were both great, but even then, I'm not sure this is the same model as them.

  • Specs are fantastic but unreliable. The one I bought for my brother crapped itself after 1 year. Wont be tempted again.

  • +3

As someone who has owned one, they are not as bad as people are making out. Actually quite a nice kit and good surface like build quality.

if you need maximum battery life these simply aren't for you but for everyone else well worth considering with these specs. Average 5 hours.

Track pad is nowhere near SB or Mac levels but certainly usable.

They can get warm on the back (doing anything max intensive in the summer will be uncomfortable…if you're holding it) but for regular tablet use/web browsing fine.

Fans, I didn't find them too bad but out of all my tablets and laptops the only device I've had where the fans have bothered me is the Surface Book…like working in an aircraft hangar when they kick in.

HP software is what you would expect.

Overall, for this price and these specs well worth considering imo.

  • Is this dual core only?

    • It's in the first line of the description, bud.

  • +2

Only 200 more than note 9

  • I have an older version and the fan is not a problem but my the screen cracked with hardly any pressure on it at all. It was a known defect at the time and they said it would cost me $800 to fix it through HP. Ended up getting it fixed via a third party for half the price.

I'll definitely get a Surface instead of HP next time.

  • Very tempted for the specs and especially the display for work purposes.

  • I think this is very interesting to bear in mind for future purchases. (gereral popular brands breakdown)

  • Let me know when Omen monitors are 25% off I might consider.

Mine arrived today. 2 day shipping time. Killed the bloatware, bit annoying but it's done now. Runs ok, including track pad and keyboard. Haven't powered up the pen yet. Bit of a gamble, but out of the box it seems pretty slick.

    • Congrats! So how is it after 1 night - any Ozbargain type Buyers Regret?

How’s the in use performance? Do you think you would notice the difference in speed compared with the new 8th gen quad core processors that claim up to 60% performance improvement (AKA Surface Pro 6).

Can you hear the fan, and has it been running hot?

I’m really torn whether to go with this or play the endless waiting game for an 8th gen i5/i7 in a few months.

One last question - are you able to benchmark the 1 TB SSD? Or at least comment on its speed.

      • +1

Will try to do some speed tests tonight. Booting and saving is subjectively fast, but you would expect that feeling on any new machine. Fan not noticable or loud (yet), some mild to moderate heat at top back of unit was present when I put hand there to specifically feel for it, otherwise would not have noticed it.

        • Do you mind sharing how it's been 5 days on?

          • @wittyusername: are you able to use this laptop on your lap? Is the screen heavier than the base/ will it topple over?

            • @k1k1: Think you got the wrong person, I;m trying to decide whether to get it too!

    • Unit charges via usb c? Does the usb charger lock in bios from the old spectre x2's still operating?

      • I am also interested in the answer to this question

  • Anyone can advise if this charges off a pwoer bank, specifically ZMI QB820? If so this would be a major sway factor - winner winner chicken dinner

  • Tried charging my i5 spectre x2 with my mate's Cygnett 20,000mAh PD powerbank and it worked. Charged at a pretty decent speed too. This was the powerbank I used: https://www.cygnett.com/products/20-000mah-usb-c-power-bank-…

  • Can this connect to an external monitor via HDMI?

The specs for this look great. Im looking for a new laptop that will last me another 5-6 years.

    • Yes, it can connect to an external monitor (via USB c to HDMI adaptor).

The issue I'm still trying to figure out is I can't adjust the display scale (%) individually. For some reasons, even though I select the screen to adjust, it takes an affect on both of the screens. This doesn't happen on my other Windows laptop.

  • I just wanted to give a quick review since I've used it for a couple of days.

    Build quality is great.
Keyboard gives a good sense of satisfaction when typing. I actually like it better than my Macbook pro keyboard.
Touchpad is not as precise as my Macbook touchpad but it's little to no big deal at all. You will eventually adapt to it.
Screen is great. I've spent hours reading and no complaints.
No issues with the heat or fan noise to me. It hasn't even got warm apart from when I was installing the Office 365. So, I haven't heard any fan noise and now started to wonder if it's actually faulty.
The battery lasts about 6 hours for the type of work I do.

I mostly just read stuff on the browser but I open a lot of taps like 20+ and also just those office applications.
And, Yes I can use it on my lap comfortably but it depends on how long your legs are.

    Happy to answer any questions.

  • Unfortunately my experience is not as positive as gaan's. This is for the i7, 16gb ram, 1TB SSSD model on this link.

Positives: Beautiful machine, nice build quality, screen bright, feels plenty fast enough, touchpad not as bad as I feared and in fact not really an issue since the X2 begs you to use touch - it's just so natural. When the fan comes on it's more a quiet whoosh and not a whine, so not unpleasant.

    Negatives:

My battery life is terrible !!! Downloaded a free app called Battery Bar - this tells me my full run time is 4 hours, and this is after CPU limiting on 68% on battery using advanced power preferences. This is the unforgivable problem, and if I can't fix it it'll have to go back. Max battery capacity reports 38 mWH with drain rate 6 mW just idling.

On battery I would check the remaining battery every minute or so, and it would steadily tick down each time :(
This is with only basic apps like Edge and Chrome running, with a few tabs each.

The Surface Pro form factor is not ideal for me - when I grab the laptop to check something, I can't just flip open the lid and browse as on a usual laptop, I've either got to find a table to fold it out, prop out the stand and position the keyboard, or alternatively fold the keyboard carefully back and try to browse using it as a touch computer. It's just easier using my Macbook air, and I find I naturally turn to it.

It runs warm in use, not unpleasant, but you notice it when surfing the internet lying down and using it in tablet mode.

    • Yes it's for this 12-c010tu model.

I forgot to mention that my eyes are sensitive to light so the brightness is always very low if not the lowest.

I also lower the performance when on battery but just enough for all the sync to be stil active.

TBH I noticed no difference in performance no matter how I adjusted it. I think it's due to how I use it.

Most importantly, I did not watch any YouTube video during my battery benchmark so please keep it into account.
