New PC Build. Please Help with Suggestions and Advice!

Finally going to build a new PC, after 7 years, with the most intensive tasks that I'll do being photo and some video editing. No gaming.
I don't plan to overclock or anything like that, don't even know what that means!
I would like it to be quite quiet as well if possible, which hopefully my new Fractal Design Define R5 will help with from the recent PCCG sale.
I'm planning to buy these parts over the next couple of months, when they go on sale, eBay Computer Alliance, PCCG, Scorptec, Umart etc… whatever will be cheapest.

No particular budget, happy to go up or down if needed, just want to get good value for around the price I'm building.
Any advice/suggestions is welcome!

Firstly, I already have a Dell U2718Q from this deal. I would like a dual monitor set-up, so I'm highly tempted to purchase another for $620 in the current Dell eBay sales, or would you suggest just the U2715H? Do you think it'll be strange to have the different resolutions next to each other?
Will I need anything special in my build for the two monitors?

I really don't know much about PC parts, so any help would be appreciated. I'm basing it off the Whirlpool wiki $1,250 build.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 2600 $235
Mobo: ?ASUS $139 or ?MSI $155 Any other suggestions? Can I go more simple with my needs?
RAM: Ripjaws? - Confusing to me, no idea what to get for my situation and compatibility.
SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 500gb $210-ish
HDD: Will reuse current storage HDDs (Samsung Spinpoints, WD Ecogreens) 5TB in total, for now
GPU: 2GB Geforce GTX 1050 $179? So I just get a basic GPU for photo and video editing?
Case: Define R5
PSU: Seasonic Focus Gold 450w $99 Is this enough? Why such a low wattage?

Is there something missing/incompatible that's really obvious? What would you do to help this build?

  • Looks good.

Cursory inspection I can only see two differences with those motherboards: 1 vs 2 M.2 slots and a Displayport er port which I'm assuming is only used with Ryzen APUs. So really it's one m.2 slot for the additional coin, not worth it IMO, unless you know you need two m.2 slots (you can buy PCIe addin cards if it's ever an issue in any case).

If GT 1030 GPU is cheaper than GTX 1050 Ti then it might be better (it has less 3D gaming capability).

I did pause on the PSU possibly low wattage but if it's on the Whirlpool guides it should be bulletproof.

    • seasonic focus gold is a solid psu, definitely more than capable of running OP's setup

    • Thanks. Do you think I needd to get a graphics card that has x2 DisplayPorts, so to take full advantage of a possible dual 27" 4k set-up?
Or is it okay to use HDMI for one monitor, and DP for the other?

Also, do you think dual 27" inch is overkill? Is one 4k and then one 1440p more realistic?

Because if I need to, I'm happy to grab one of the Radeon RX 580 4GB for <$250, or a Radeon RX570 for $220-ish. What do you think?

  • Hey OP, sort of depends on the type of video editing, I would check with the software on its recommended requirements (not just minimum) see if it's cuda cores, vram is required. I would say minimum 16GB, budget around $200 if you get the cheapest reasonable items you can find (2x8GB for Ryzen).

Nothing wrong with the processor, consider Intel for some software's ability to utilize the iGPU for rendering, makes a big difference, in this league probably the 8400 is a fair comparison.

I've seen deals on 1TB SSDs for around $220, so similar to the price of your Samsung EVO, I'm not sure what effect going from SATA to NVME SSDs will have, may be worth it for video editing, in my experience SATA SSDs were fine though.

Keep us up to date with what you decide to do, will be interesting.

    • I'm only going AMD because I don't really have a clue what to do and I've mainly followed the Wiki, which was around my price range.
Do you have links to possible RAMs you would suggest? I don't know how to check for compatibility at all.
Lastly, the PC I have now doesn't even have a SSD, is 7+ years old (Sandy Bridge), so I'm not video editing at the moment. So no software. IT's much too frustrating and slow. But I had done so ages ago (10+ years), and now have plenty of clips of 4k @ 30fps, and 1080p @ 60fps, of my family that I would like to start putting into videos etc…

      • Interesting picking AMD just for simplicity / the Wiki guide. Just check the editing software and benchmarks for both CPUs for whichever does better rendering, they'll both be fine for running the editing software though, no doubt about it, if the 8400 is cheaper and performs better, it's the right choice, if the price to performance of the 2600 is right then it should be chosen instead.

Check the PC partpicker links for your builds.

  • I would chose the asus prime b450m-a, 16gb 3000mhz+ and 550w psu from corsair or similar

  • RAM: Ripjaws? - Confusing to me, no idea what to get for my situation and compatibility

Get the fastest RAM that's within budget… ryzen likes fast RAM. But it's also very picky… when you decide on the motherboard, go to that model's website and look for the compatibility list (or QVL, qualified vendor list).

  • So if anyone's interested or if this helps anyone, this is what I have ordered:

    AMD Ryzen 5 2600 $204
    ASUS Prime B450M-A $124
    HyperX Predator 2X8GB DDR4 3200MHz $238
    Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SSD $212
ASUS Radeon RX 580 Dual OC 4GB $249
    Fractal Design Define F5 $99
    Seasonic Focus Gold 450W $99

I will get AC:Odyssey with the SDD, which I will on-sell for a few bucks hopefully.
I spent a bit extra on the GPU, but it seems good value, for the x2 DP ports for my x2 U2718Q, and I also get the 3 free games for that GPU as well.

I will want to get a card reader, as well as Windows 10. What's the best version of Windows 10 to get, and wheres the best/cheapest way to get it (genuine copy)? There's so many out there?
