Soon it's going to be cheaper to fly to la then drive to syd based on fuel prices

    • +4

Well based on Sydney airport parking prices, driving to the airport and parking for a 3 week trip would equate to about half the cost of flying to lax…. Perfectly reasonable ;)

    • Or maybe just fly to Sydney, Canada :)

    What no love for Melbourne?

    • +1

no unfortunately not! The cheapest I can find is over $1k!

    • It’ll be cheaper to fly to Melbourne, Florida as well as Sydney, Nova Scotia, so both major cities are covered!

  • How many gift cards can be redeemed on their site ?

  • Thanks OP. Looks like my first trip abroad shall be USA.
Just wondering, as someone who wants to save money, what insurance levels etc do you all feel is necessary or highly recommend ??
Of course as I click through for ticket purchase, I am being offered all these add ons at extra cost.
1 optional extra even offers reimbursement if the traveller dies before the flight Hahaha . Alot of good thats goin to for you reimbursement after your own death. Lol.

Receive your trip's reimbursement due to cancellation for illness or death of the traveller or a family member.

    • Sorry I am no expert on travel insurance. Perhaps someone else can help?

    • Travel insurance is one of those things that you don't want to have to use. From what I've experienced (and this obviously changes from provider to provider) there has only been three times when I've thought I could use it and I couldn't for any.

First time was in NZ, one of our internal flights got cancelled and we were stuck in Queenstown for an extra 24 hours. After working out that our travel delay insurance was about $200 per 24 hours, we opted for the $180/night hotel rather than the $90/night hostel. Upon returning to Australia we were told that the travel delay only counts for your last flight back to Australia. (Mostly my fault for not reading the fine print, but I did think it would be covered).

The next time was when we were delayed coming back from the USA. As the delay was less than 8 hours, we couldn't get anything, but it did make us miss our domestic flight back home!

Third time was in Thailand, I felt really sick with a sore throat, to the point that I could barely eat or drink. I went to the doctors and $160 later (plus some of the strongest painkillers and antibiotics I have ever had) I was fine. Technically I COULD use it this time but the excess was $150, so for the sake of $10 it wasn't worth my time making the claim.

It isn't there for minor inconveniences. Even if you did want to use it for this, its not like they send you money instantly; you need to pay for yourself, keep all the evidence and then make a claim at a later. They will review your claim and decide later (weeks maybe?) if they are paying it.

Just quickly having a look at Budget Travel Insurance (first one that popped into my head) for a three week trip to Thailand, the things that are covered by the top level and not by the basic level are: Hijack (extremely unlikely), domestic pets (how many people take their pets with them on an international holiday?), luggage delay (definitely a small possibility, but as I said above, you would have to buy clothes and get reimbursed later), permanent disability (basic will still cover your hospital expenses though) etc.

Having said all this, the difference between the basic and top level of insurance in this example is $25! So for all the extras you get, I would pay the $25.

So basically, I find you will only NEED the basic level of most plans. Death and injury. But most of time time the price difference is so small between the best and worst that I go with the best anyway.

I would say avoid the travel insurance that you get offered when buying tickets on these websites. Spending 20 minutes getting your own quotes is generally better. See the wiki for a list of sites and this thread might also be helpful. Remember that some gold or platinum credit cards have free travel insurance, check the terms and conditions, most of the time you need to buy part of your trip (flights/hotels) using them.

P.S. About your example Receive your trip's reimbursement due to cancellation for illness or death of the traveller or a family member. Picture this horror situation for a second: You've just spend $6,000 on a month long dream holiday to the USA, and the day before you leave one of your parents suddenly dies (sorry about the morbid scenario). The insurance company will(should?) cover and pay you back for any of those non-refundable purchases, so you should see all of your $6000 back

  • The byojet option has dropped off the search option now and higher $800s is the cheapest option now. Is anyone still getting a $830 price?
