  • I just got up and remembered I had to check the price of an ups battery at Jaycar website…

    Winning!

    • +1

Just purchased $57 worth of stuff on Sunday, not winning!

      • +4

Purchase the same stuff with your Amex, and then return the new stuff with the old receipt.

        • I would do it the other way around. Refund first and then purchase again with Amex maybe even the day after. (Assuming unopened)

          • +2

@Sweetnsour: I was assuming by the ops despondent tone that the items had been used.

          • @Sweetnsour: Wouldn't the refund trigger for the credit not to apply as per the offer terms "- Credit may be reversed if your qualifying purchase is refunded or cancelled."

    • Also check radioparts though

  • +1

    Now what should i buy

    • +16

This is the challenge, as everything in jaycar is 2x to 3x the price of everything on Ali.

  • +1

Haven't been to jaycar for long not sure what to buy

  • Can this be stacked? Ie buy $100 of stuff and use 2 cards to get $40 off?

    • +1

You may be able to split the transaction into 2x $50 lots but check first

    • It says "spend $50 in one or more transactions", so you'd probably get one $40 credit for spending $100 in one go just like the BP deal.

    • +1

Spent a little over $100 and got $40 back in one transaction at jaycar

  • +48

This is getting lots of up votes but just a reminder about the boycott

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5379161/redir

    • +6

Thank you so much for mentioning this as I had not seen that thread before. I didn't realise how shady Jaycar was until seeing that video and reading more about what happened. Will never buy from Jaycar again.

      • +1

Ditto, hadn't heard about this. Used to spend thousands with Jaycar or their parent electronics parts company each year in the past; this business is closed now, however wish it was still running so I could spend elsewhere. Aztronics in Adelaide are pretty damn good, BTW. :)

    • +1

Thanks, blatantly ripping off other people's ideas is not cool. Didn't know there was a boycott against them. I guess I will make an exception and buy from them only when there are special offers, like this one. And I will make sure everyone I know buys a freetronics kit (if they ever need one).

    • +3

Thanks for highlighting. This type of corporate greed is unacceptable. Along with the fact I would only go to Jaycar if I needed something ASAP because of their pricing (can't wait for shipping), I've revoked my upvote.

  • How come Commbank amex has inferior terms? Are they scrapping AMEX from their repertoire?

    • +3

Combank are discontinuing Amex from next month hence the need to buy before the end of this month!

The other 'big 4 banks' have already discontinued Amex.

    • +1

      yes they are. next month.

  • +40

    Jaycar is a crappy company

    https://youtu.be/SW8K9D9u5aI

    • +1

      Oh wow… That's disgraceful.

    • -4

      Maybe it's just coincidence?

Have Jaycar responded to the accusations?

      • No coincidence, they even went as far as to copy the content and images out of his manual, which was most definitely his IP.

        • -3

which was most definitely his IP.

          Unless he copied it too…

    • +1

Its inevitable… would you not buy a cheaper RTX 2080 if it was a clone and worked just like Nvidia's ?

    • Surely this wasn't Jaycar, but rather the Chinese manufacturer (that made this bloke's kit) re-selling the design.

      • Listen to the the end of the youtube video about what Jaycar asked this guy for…

      • If the original person who got these made in China. It's blatant obvious the factory who made the kit started making deals with Jaycar themselves to sell again your ideas. Jaycar probably don't know abut it thinking it's a new product that they can sell

      • But that is Jaycar's copycat, they own the brand of Duinotech themselves.
Besides, Jaycar sell freetronics as well so they definitely know this problem already.

    • +1

The link is broken, got a new one?

    • Thanks, was interested in the deal but not anymore after watching the video.
Have revoked my plus vote but can't neg after a revoke it seems.

  • +14

    Keep the boycott going

    • -2

Arduino is not freetronic's original design…They just put their own stickers onin house manufactured board. They are overpriced and cheaper to buy from ebay.

      • +2

It's not about the design of the components.

It's about copyright. Copying the box and mould and word for word copying the manual and pictures.

    • -3

Boycotting should post to ozBoycott, ozbargain is for getting a good deal, not about boycott

    • Problem is we have no other aussie companies that fill that same need. If they go broke then we just have nowhere to go on a saturday to pick up bits for our projects. That's a huge loss

  • Last I checked, I thought Ozb hates Jaycar just as cage eggs.

    • just as cage eggs.

      and cage fighting.

      • +1

I keep my eggs in the fridge, not a cage.

  • +24

Will Jaycar accept a Chinese clone of an AMEX ?

    • If there's credit they might do it

  • +2

Good deal, but please don't support jaycar as spoken about above, they don't deserve the business.

  • +4

No idea what u could possibly buy here.. Everything is cheap chinese 2 dollar shop type stuff… Everything else is marked up 200%

  • +2

Everything Jaycar sells, eBay/Ali sells cheaper.

    And usually waaaaaaay cheaper.

    • It is the same for many other products, but it is the customer service which add the value

  • +8

Neg'ing due to Jaycar being an unethical company. I wouldn't buy anything from them.

  • Jaycar is only good for emergency components otherwise eBay is cheaper and doesn't come with the huge mark up.

  • +1

I understand the neg'ing happening on the deal and totally support the boycott. But this deal was posted by a user like U and I and not an associated employee. He/she may not have known the history of the issue in question. If I look at the bargain, its great and would want to give a thumbs up for OPs effort for finding and posting the deal but on the other hand i would refrain due to the idea stealing by Jaycar and thus would stay neutral. We can educate fellow OZBgnrs by posting comments and not by punishing the OP. Just a thought

    • +6

But how does it punish the OP? All it does is hide the post from the main page, I don't believe OzBargain 'punishes' him/her as such?

The only thing I could find about negative votes is that for a company rep it limits their ability to post more "bargains" in short succession.
In this case, the OP isn't a rep, so there shouldn't be any repercussions.

      Negative Vote

      Purpose:

To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product.

      Result of negative vote(s):

If there are more negative votes than positive, the deal is hidden on new deals page & categories page for visitors and users with default >settings.
All comments by the user who cast the negative vote are highlighted with a negative vote symbol.
If the negative votes are cast against a deal posted by a rep, this will increase the time period between their next subsequent post.

    • +3

      by punishing the OP

      LOL.

This is about the deal, not a vanity competition…

      • +2

I'm just quoting what he said.

  • +3

I was going to take this offer up, hadn't heard anything about the above ripoff, watched video, now not shopping at Jaycar.

And I genuinely thought "eh, as if this video will change my mind" prior to seeing what they did.

  • +3

Look at the bright side, do not have to Neg the post, just take the offer and do not make any purchase. Which in return to "zero-out" their marketing effort.

    • +1

thanks, i was going to ignore it by boycotting but doing this instead so neither amex or jaycar get anything.

  • +2

I just checked their website and their markup were so high that I thought I was reading it wrong

  • +1

Didn't know about the issue with Jaycar above. But even then not sure I'd buy anything from them. Unless it's a lucky spot of a clearance item most of their stuff is epically overpriced compared and the same stuff from eBay/AliEx, and if you want trustworthy sources places like RS Aus are cheaper with free delivery if you can find a listing you don't need to buy 1000 of:P

  • +3

If you are considering buying from JayCar, buy from eBay instead. This is a company that steals IP from designers.

    • Why ain't Jaycar busted yet?

  • +7

After the demise of Dick Smith we need Jaycar to survive. As simple as that.

Are they expensive, yes. Can you get them cheaper from China, yes. Do we need a brick and mortar components shop for emergencies, hell yes!

    • +1

      Thanks Jay.

      • That's Mr Car to you.

  • +2

Hurts me to see the last remaining electronics parts store chain is doing this. I'm not a big DIY electronics type, but need parts time to time and appreciate very much that Jaycar exists - don't mind paying extra even just to help keep the store open - and I (maybe even most of us?) want to like them and want to keep them alive, but this behavior is making it very hard.

    • +2

Agreed. And I do understand wanting to punish them, but when they go bankrupt (which might happen even without a boycott, judging by the downfall of many aussie retailers before them) we'll have no place to go to for parts on a saturday to finish our project. That's a huge loss for us. To the point where I'd probably rather have them around being evil and support them lol. At least until a competitor arises. And that competitor must be Aussie as well.

  • Thanks for the link, good timing as I need to pop into one to buy some parts.

Gotta love bricks and mortar companies when you're needing something TODAY and not wait 30 days shipping from China

  • I went to Jaycar today. Could not find anything I want to buy also did not see the kit that people wanted to boycott them for

    • +2

They discontinued it not long after the debacle.

It's amusing that people are boycotting Jaycar because of IP infringement… and suggesting buying from AliExpress and eBay instead. ;)

      • Amusing will turn to anguish as the company folds and employees out of work.

        Thanks Ozbargain mindless boycott wankas

  • Does using Apple Pay with the Amex under the bonnet work for these offers?

    • As long as you have registered the actual card number, yes

      • Thank you.

      • Wait what about this in the t&c? Not related?

Excludes transactions made through a third party establishment or payment processor.

        • Not related; those are referring to things like PayPal and (not that you can use your Amex on it) Afterpay, as it'll show up as PayPal*Jaycar or Afterpay rather than Jaycar

  • +2

Damn! I wanted to buy this using my Amex but it's out of stock
