A kind note from Amazon 3rd party seller perspective: Amazon allows couriers to leave parcels unattended in a "safe" place in order to reduce delivery time, but the definition of "safe" really depends on individual delivery personnel from Fastway, Toll or AusPost, so sometimes parcels can be lost. So we recommend using your work address or somewhere that will be attended during business hours to ensure delivery is accounted for (especially for higher value items like this).

This powerbank (the 20000 mAh version) was once $50. Price went up pretty quickly. Hoping for another deal like that. Until then this is still very expensive.

Source: got it exactly a year ago.

    • Would really like the QB820 but because I saw the prices your talking about ( and missed out three times even with prices going up from around $40 to $60 by just minutes ), I can't bring myself to paying these prices of $76-$102 even if they now make them sound like a bargain.

    • I wish I'd bought that at the time. Back then I didn't consider $50 for a 20k mAh power bank to be cheap. Was waiting for it to get cheaper, but did not forsee it being discontinued and hard to order in.

While I somewhat understand the limitations of delivering stable power at high wattage using small sets of batteries, I so wish these could keep up 40w for longer.
I have a Dell xps 15 which while quite happily charge slowly on 40w PD, unfortunately i get about 5 mins of charge from my 20,000mah version before the wattage drops and stop being able to detect it or even do that odd thing you sometimes get where it runs from the power but doesn't charge.
As long as your device will trickle charge at 29w you should be able to use it until it gets down to 30-50% before it's only useful to charge phones.
Just my experience on some higher stress charging.
Bring on a 30,000mah version or something with some high current cells!

As RichardL pointed out above, the Zmi powerbank's output will not suffice XPS 15's requirement, see this link on Dell forum "XPS 15 uses a proprietary protocol to get up to 130W via the USB-C port", and requires a minimum of 60W power in order to charge it properly, so only the monsters of power banks like QUANHAN PD20000 could do it.

On the other hand, this powerbank will be able to charge other laptops like MacBook (2015 and later)/MacBook Pro (2016 and later)/Pixelbook etc.

  • Thanks. Just placed an order for the Zmi QB820 and the Zmi USB C cable. Im assuming it will charge my new Galaxy Book 12 just fine?

    • Never assume. You know what they say,….because it makes an …out of you and me.

I think you'll be OK though ( just assuming ).

    • Samsung tends to use QC as opposed to PD.

Does the supplied adapter use a C to C cable or A to C?

      • A TO C cable… Uhoh.. I just want something that is portable to charge my new Galaxy book 12 fast.. Ahh dammit, can I cancel Amazon orders?

          Hi Pepsii

Quick google search found this thread stating "The Galaxy Book supports being charged with either Quick Charge chargers or USB-PD chargers when plugged in directly."

The Zmi powerbank's output ports include QC2.0 (compatible with Samsung Adaptive Fast Charge) via USB-A ports at max 18W and USB PD via USB-C port at max 40W.

I think you are safe in this case. But if in doubt, please contact Amazon Customer Service to cancel the order. Here's a link

          • @Mostly Melbourne: Thanks for your help. In that case, I will gladly keep the order :)

I tried googling as well but for some reason didn't cane across that page. I Need to work on my googling skills.

          • @Mostly Melbourne: That advice is based on hearsay though. I can't find it anywhere on Samsung's official specs that it supports USB PD charging.

The latest version of the Book I can't comment on.

            • @lostn: Here's a review article summarising the various charging protocols.

It seems that Samsung's AFC protocol utilise 5V/9V at 2A output, which is compatible to the QC2.0 protocol from a USB-A port.

Like you, I don't have the actual stock charger the Book came with, if there's a photo showing the specs, it would be quite obvious to determine.

              • @Mostly Melbourne:

This part I don't dispute. It's the part about it supporting USB PD that I can't find confirmation of.

I have the charger for the Tab Pro S which is the predecessor to Galaxy Book. Its charger is the same spec as a my Galaxy S8.

That doesn't mean Galaxy Book's charger is going to be the same spec, but you know.. it's Samsung. While other OEMs have switched their smartphones to use PD, they're still in love with AFC for some reason. And it wouldn't surprise me if the GB's charger is the same thing again.

                • @lostn: My S8 supports QC 2.0 as per spec, but it can also be fast charged with USB PD chargers. You should see "Fast Charging" in the lock screen when connected to USB PD chargers.

                  • @tukanglistrik: Is it actually faster than qC 2.0 though? Did you time how long it takes to fully charge with both?

The "Fast Charging" notification is not standard-specific. It just means it's faster than charging normally. It's totally expected to receive charge from a C to C cable, but is it fully PD spec compliant? Is it getting the maximum power out of the PD charger? What I'd like to see is a volt/amp reading coming from the PD charger. If it's really getting 40W into the S8 I would be very impressed.

                    • @lostn: Definitely not 40W, that's for laptops only. I read somewhere that it's charged at 15W (5V/3A), same as Pixel.
I've never actually measured the time but feels like it's around the same as using the factory charger at 9V/1.67A.

Ypu would love a QB820 but it's just priced too high

    • Agreed, it used to be half that from sites like banggood and gearbest.

  • Isn't the Cygnett which goes to $75~ every now and then a better deal. The only real difference I can see is that the ZMI charges itself faster but that doesn't worry me too much. Can anyone give me any reason why this is better? If there's no real reason I'd probably go for the Cygnett just because I could just walk it into a good guys store if anything happened. The Cygnett looks better and slimmer from what I've seen too. But if there's a key difference which makes the ZMI better I'd be happy to jump the gun on this.

  • best powerbank I own, had it for roughly 16 months, charges everything (mbp/ switch/sb2 etc) and quick too!! Anyone had any luck finding a silicone case that will fit these models?admittedly I haven't looked after a month of owning it but have had to resort to buying the silicone covers that fit the standard xiaomi p/b just to protect it as the powerbank itself is very slippery to hold.

    • +1

Agree with you, it's slippery and for its price should deserve a protective case.

However I had the opportunity to ask Zmi about what case do they recommend for this powerbank specifically, and the answer I got was NONE, reason being that the aluminium shell also helps with heat dissipation (comparing to plastic ones) so any form of case could potentially be detrimental to the power output performance. Which is also why when QB820 first came out it came with a clothes bag but the QB815 no longer has it.

      • Thanks for that little tidbit of info.

Hmm.. never got the case! Or maybe I should check the box.. if I can find it..

Interesting response from ZMI however makes sense. It is still slippery!! I've dropped it a couple times, the casing doesn't sit as 'flush' as it used too but nothing too serious.

        • I bought a bunch of WD Passport drives over the years. They come with a cloth pouch with a draw string. I don't find them adequate to protect a Passport, so I purchased soft shell cases for my Passports for a few bucks each.

I just put my power banks inside those spare WD pouches. They're breathable so it won't cause overheating, and the bag is loose if you don't draw the string, so it can have plenty of air. It will also give it some grip and keep the power bank clean.

  • can you use the a usb c to normal usb cord to connect it to your computer to allow it to have the two other usb free to use as a hub ( sorry if this is a stupid question)!I don't have a usb c port on my laptop

    • +1

Yep it works. Just tested myself to make sure.

      • thanks you for that! appreciate it, gona go for one!

  • Are we allowed to bring this in our handcarry on the plane?

    • +1

Yes the airline capacity limit is 100Wh. These 2 are 72 and 54Wh respectively

    • +1

Airlines will allow you to bring the power banks as long as it actually clearly labels on the power bank what capacity it is

i had an issue with China Customs confiscating my 20,000 ebay purchased one because it didnt label it but my xiaomi Mi 2c ones were fine

  • Quick question Rep, what would be the best charger for these power banks?

    • It'll take 45W input via USB-C port with PD compatible chargers, so Anker chargers, your stock laptop USB-C chargers, Apple 61W/87W adapters, or the Xiaomi 45W/65W chargers all work at the highest output level.

Do note that there's a problem (design flaw I'd say) with the new Apple 30W charger that Nathan K had identified causing incompatibility with a wide number of USB-PD Two-way enabled power banks including Mophie Powerstation XXL (flagship model) and ZMI QB820/815.

Also it's recommended to have a good quality charging cable to for high power applications, at least 22AWG for the power core if >60W. We will have the Xiaomi Zmi AL350 5A USB-C to C cable available for sale shortly (relatively cheap too comparing to Belkin and Apple).

  • Thanks OP!

  • About these QB820s.. are they back in production, or are you selling the last of the remaining stock that still exists?

The reason I ask is, I want to know if it's possible they will go down in price in the future. I don't think $100 is reasonable for a power bank no matter what it comes with. Obviously if they are still out of production, they're not going to go down. But I'm hoping they started making them again.

    • +1

They were back in production briefly plus some remaining stock from the US circulated through Chinese ZMI distributors. People who purchased can verify, the labelled date are circa May-Jun 2018.

It could be possible that they may not be stable supply in large quantities going forward (last time due to short of supply of the cells hence QB815 as a successor). And as a matter of fact, it has been a little bit difficult to source them from distributors this week comparing to two weeks ago (maybe Zmi has allocated most of the stock to retail channel in preparation for 11.11 Singles day sale).

  • Hi OP, bought one, thanks. FYI though, there are a few errors both in this post and on your amazon listing, e.g.:

    1) the max usb-c output is the same as the input, 45W (15V,3A)
    2) the weight is 405 g.

    https://www.zmiusa.com/collections/new-releases/products/200…
    https://www.amazon.com/ZMI-Pixelbook-Nintendo-External-Power…

    • Thanks for pointing them out.

The deal description is 40W on purpose as the technical specs on the product actually states 40W at both 15V2.66A and 20V2A range (although testing showed that it could produce slightly beyond 40W).

In terms of Amazon page, it is slightly trickier for 3rd party sellers as we don't have full control over the page content, for instance it took 3 weeks for Amazon to change the model number to AL301 on the Zmi cable listing.

Nevertheless, appreciate your comments and enjoy the power bank!

      • huh… so does this mean it's a different version from what is sold in the US?

or are both those sources, including the official ZMI us site, incorrect?

        • The packaging looks different for USA. But the content are the same, I had a look at the Amazon US customer uploaded product photos and the specs on the case also say "USB-C: 5-20V max 40W".

          • @Mostly Melbourne: Thanks!

wow… that's pretty bad. I bought one from ZMI USA (just before I read you were importing :( and wasted oodles on MyUS shipping), so will have to complain to them about the false advertising…

          • +1

@Mostly Melbourne: Hey mate, emailed ZMI USA about this, and thought you might like to know their response:

The marking on you power bank shows 40W, because the UL certification lab only allows us to write 45W for he USB-C port only if 45W is attained at both 15V and 20V. Because our power bank only delivers 40W at 20V, the lower wattage (40W at 20V) prevail in the labeling, instead of the 45W at 15V. However, if your laptop chooses the 15V profile (like in the case of HP Spectre x360 13"), the power bank will deliver 45W.

So, looks like you can advertise 45W (@ 15V,3A) :)

            • @yozza: Interesting to know, learn something new everyday!
