        But not bitcoin, it's for other shitcoins, GPU mining of bitcoin has been unviable for many years thanks to ASIC miners guessing numbers for no reason just wasting more electicity than most smaller countries.

          No doubt they've gone and ruined it for everyone, as caps like to do, but I think the original idea - of a currency rather than just another thing to hoard - was beautiful. Maybe something good will come of it yet.

  • All sorts of annoying GPU issues can arise from using poor quality GPU riser cables if you are looking into a 16x one for non-mining purposes.

    Would recommend avoiding unbranded / generic ones, and stick with those that come with high quality vertical GPU mounting kits (such as the CoolerMaster or cablemod kits) or as an official accessory to a case with a vertical GPU mounting option.

    Take this as your regular warning against using SATA to power risers, with or without a conversion to 6 pin.

    PCI-e GPU’s can draw up to 5.5A @ 12V (66W) through the PCI-e connector.
    SATA cables can only supply up to 4.5A @ 12V (54W).

    You should never power a card purely off a riser that uses SATA somewhere in the chain. And even with cards that accept a 6 pin or 8 pin connector, you cannot control the power distribution. 6 pins are rated for 75W whilst 8 pins are rated for 150W. On that math, a card like an RX570 which has a 6pin power input and the PCI-e connector has a theoretical maximum of 75 + 54W (129W total) before you’re going to get severe problems. However you could get failure, including fires, with a much lower power draw since there’s no way to guarantee that the first 75W will be delivered via the 6pin and not via the PCI-e (and therefore the SATA). For example, a 110W power draw would be safe if 66W or more is being supplied via the 6pin (thus leaving 54W or less to come via the risers), but since the riser can command up to 66W, it could attempt to do so, and literally melt the cables (if you’re lucky enough to be there to switch it off immediately - otherwise it could be much worse).

    Having said that, appropriate cards with appropriate undervolting can be run off SATA cables in the chain, but you have to be extremely careful - monitoring for heat in the connectors is one way. Keep in mind that a simple mishap of a system rebooting and losing undervolting settings, then powering up, could result in a fire.

        In many circumstances, yes.

        But this is not the fault of the actual product, so much as the inherent design of power supplies. Even the high end, high output models don’t have enough 6/8 pin connectors to power a 6 GPU mining rig. Ideally, you should have two 6 pin connectors per GPU (one into the card itself, and the other into the riser) however they usually top out at 8-10. As a result, a person must either buy a second power supply, or use Molex/SATA adapters. Molex is safer as it can range from 72-120W capacity (due to ~6-10A current, depending on the wire gauge) however usually there are more SATA connectors provided for a power supply than Molex (in my experience, at least).

        And all of what I just said applies for lower powered cards. Some RX580’s draw much more power than what I outlined above, and then there’s Vegas, 1060’s - 1080ti’s etc etc. Some of those cards are almost never suitable for SATA to be involved in any way, and can even require two 6 pin connectors and an 8 pin just to power 1 card.

    With all the miners selling I would be looking at second hand fire sales first. Risers are basically worthless once they've flooded the market in a miner downturn.
