  • Got to agree

But there are some genuine, good deals from reps

    I.e. Harris technology, bargaincrypt, etc.

    • Yeah, a couple deals were pretty good but they have to be reps from known shops. I have seen a couple reps from overseas that was posting junk deals.

Reps have always been allowed to post. However undeclared reps are banned and posts removed. The Toshiba sale the weekend was from a rep and canned because they did not declare their association with the company.

Banning reps just leads to people pretending to be a user, which isn't what we want, also they can have knowledge of a deal in advance as issh points out.

As the site grows so will the deals, and so will deals that dont suit some but not others.

Scotty is developing sometime, the ability to filter deals based on a number of criteria. Suggest you post something in the feature requests section, so he can see if he can add this filtering method to those he is developing

  • I just wish reps would wake up and realise posting junk on ozbargain doesn't get you far.

Just have a look at the recent history, filled with junk posted by reps that nobody clearly wants.

The reps just seem very stupid to me, most of the time they are already selling something else that would appeal to ozbargain more, but they instead think we want fake seat belts..

That was what I was hoping as well, and usually when a rep contacted me I'll mention that bad deals would lead to negative votes and complains from the community which is not a good publicity to them.

However I think many of them seem to subscribe to the theory of "any publicity is good publicity". Then email back threatening legal action on defamation. Oh well.

Do you get a lot of these threats? Sounds like a bunch of sooks.

        • +1

No actually not many. And mostly are just bluffing anyway.

  • How about have a verification system for reps? It would be sorted by mods and if legitimate, the rep tag will be added.

What about a % positive rating for reps?

  • gotta agree so much junks on the oversea rep & lingerie which hardly a bargain

We've been reviewing some reps posts lately and are now going to implement site bans if there are too many consecutive deals garnering negative votes.

xanthor, all they have to do is click the rep button. We just want people to be honest.

As Pete says, long term solution is programming in filtering and such. We'll wait and see.

I am moving this to the Announcement/Feedback forum as it's ozbargain related.

As ozpete/neil have already commented, I'll be developing extra filters for the deal feeds. Hopefully it would be ready in the next 4 weeks (if I don't get distracted by something else :) However I think it would still be a good idea to have community involved to work out a good solution.

I don't really want to remove rep posting all together. There are many good deals are posted by store reps, and sometimes even exclusive offers. Therefore a simplistic solution of allowing to filter out all rep-posted deals might not be ideal. I will have that implemented anyway as it seems to be quick hack to solve some people's problem :)

Ideally a reputation system for shops will need to be developed, which will give shops scores based on votes from their previous deals, plus rating on the store itself (so for example OfficeWorks.com.au might be a highly rated store, and will not be penalised much if some people have consecutively posted not-so-good deals from there).

    Their reputation then affects

    • Their ability to post. Currently it's quite simple — too many -1 votes from the past 5 days will result temp ban. I'll need to work out something that also reduce their rate of posting when they are out of the ban.
    • People's rep-posts filters. So users should be able to say, under "New Deals"
      • List out all the deals have 0 or more votes,
      • Except for rep-posts, only for stores above certain reputation.

Rather than just say "I'll think about it more", I think I should do is to actually implement something, let the community test out, and iterate from there. We'll see.

+1 to that, there are way too many good reps on Ozbargain doing a fine job

Yes, that'll work well as a business will want to have a good reputation, and thus if a business has a low reputation, they will want to give a better deal on their items(we are not looking to bankrupt a business), in order to get their reputation higher.

Except for rep-posts, only for stores above certain reputation.

      very smart!
