Vornado 660 Air Circulator Floor Fan $158.40 + Delivery (Free C&C) @ The Good Guys eBay

1060
PGOOD20

First warm night in Sydney so decided it's time to look for a fan. Fed up of pedestal fans so wanted to try something different. Vornado 660 seems to have good reviews. Fair warning it has some haters but in my mind it's not quite Dyson when it comes to overpriced.

Only a few bucks more expensive than best deal I can see from Costco last year at $149.99.

They also have the much smaller Vornado 533 for $103.20 (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Vornado-71533-533-Compact-Fl…) but doesn't represent such good value.

costco still has it for 150
but I bought a second hand one for $70
really pleased with it comparing to my $10 fan
feels more like a sea breeze in the whole room

    • +9

But how would it compare to 15 pedestal fans?

      • bit closer:D
$70 is alright.not buying it for 150.not paying for dyson either

      • +4

Less painful during that toilet stop in the middle of the night

    • Where did you buy the used one?

      • gumtree

  • Difference between this and the 633?

    • +40

      660-633, just 27 differences

    • +9

Maximums of 584 CFM vs 393 CFM, according to their specifications (among other things).

      • +4

I like how dragonindespair has more upvotes than your factually helpful one :)

        • All about luck haha

        • -3

          That's the mentality of OzBargainers.

  • is it meant to be used in conjunction with an air con? or does it perform well without? A fan just blowing warm air around doesn't present much value to me because I still feel like I'm melting regardless.

      • +8

What the hell? One of the images says it lowers energy costs by turning down a thermostat so its clearly being used with one there :S

        • +10

An air con pumps out cold air, or a heater pumps out hot air…….but it doesn't necessarily circulate it around the entire room or house.

The theory is an air circulator fan is intended to circulate the air more evenly around a room or house, used in conjunction with a air con or heater, which should mean that the air con/heater is not required to be engaged constantly.

Think about how all the hot air coming out of a heater tends to go straight up to the ceiling, rather than around the room. An air circulating fan is intended to spread that heat around.

I don't have a Vornado myself, although I'm tempted to buy one.

I find it hard to take the plunge without experiencing one in action - but 20% off makes it more tempting/less risky.

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for that info. I'm tempted at this price also.

            • +9

@brendanAUS: I've had one for a few years. Run this in an average size room alongside aircon and you'll freeze. It does perform as the box says.

              • @Spicket: It’s just a little fan isn’t it? How can r cool down a room and why is it so expensive.

          • @[Deactivated]: I should add, I have a heater but no air con, so I'd just be relying on the air circulation to try and keep me cool. So keeping my expectations realistic!

            • @[Deactivated]: Your air won't be cooler. It'll just be breezy. lol

              • @smuggler: I know. But renting in melbourne. Slight breeze better than nuthin' on 30 degree night…..

              • +3

@smuggler: You've never heard of "wind chill factor"?

            • @[Deactivated]: cold damp towel over the front of the fan might help give you a slightly cooler breeze while it lasts

              • @sssx: Thanks. Even better, cold damp towel on my body, small fan aimed at me and I eventually pass out!

However i'm hoping a vornado might provide some incremental benefit.

              • +8

@sssx: The cooling of which could be negated by the heating of a resulting electrical fire.

I don't think this is true, it just moves cooler/warmer air around the house for comfort. The same amount of energy is removed/added by the airconditioner.

            • +2

@Diji1: I have an air conditioner in a 2 bedroom unit, split level. Bedroom is a toasty 30-38 degrees on a warm day as hot air rises.
Air conditioner is downstairs and fixed to a wall. Hot air rises, cool air doesnt.

Used to run a second air conditioner upstairs (floor model, fed to the window for extraction).
Switched off the upstairs air con, put a vornado below the air conditioner, facing the roof (vertically).

No longer need the air conditioner upstairs, moves the air from the air con outlet upstairs and the entire place is cool.

    • +2

I have one and use it in conjunction with my aircon. The aircon cools one side of the room really well, but the air doesn't circulate around the other half of the room as well, and hardly makes it around corners. I use this to help spread the cool air around better to get a slightly more consistent temperature in the full room instead of just near the aircon.

Sometimes I try using it and a pedestal fan to push the cool air around corners into other rooms. I'd use two of these if I could get them cheaper, but I don't want to buy a second one.

I don't have scientific measurements for how well I manage to get air to do a U turn into another room, but the other room at least feels cooler quicker when I do this than when I don't.

      • +3

Have you tried moving your furniture for turning vane Feng Shui?

      • +1

We have the same problem getting cool air around the corner into our kitchen. What we do is turn the ceiling fan on in the kitchen but have it running in reverse. (Winter Mode) Theory is it drags the cool air from the floor area and disperses the heat from the ceiling. Works for us here in Brissy.

        • Interesting.

    • +2

I understand what you mean by using in conjunction with an aircon as I actually use it for that purpose.

My air-con only blows in one direction (doesn't have that swing function) so using the Vornado helps circulate the cool air around and makes the room cool quicker.

Usually after 1 hour of running it I can turn off the a/c and then keep the fan on low settings to sleep comfortably through the night.

    • Yes

  • +2

I have this and it is awesome. Very compact at well.

Great to circulate air to keep the room breezy.

  • +3

Will it evenly circulating floor dust?

    • +12

No, but it can clear a path through the Lego minefield.

      • +3

        Sold!

  • what's the noise level on this thing? can leave on at night like a standard $10 kmart fan?

    • +4

Personally I don't like to hear a fan at all at night time, so even on the quietest setting this is a bit louder than I'd like, but it's not louder than a $10 kmart fan on medium-high speed. I sometimes leave this Vornado outside the room directing a breeze into the room, so it's just above the bed height - a bit further away for the noise factor, and means there's a slight breeze travelling over the bed, kinda nice.

      • +3

Good idea leaving it outside the room! would love to get one, but the fan is still super pricey. Might as well run aircon all summer based on my calcs.

      • People sleep with their door open?

        • Yes. where do you live?

        • Only when it's hot enough to need it… I prefer the door closed.
Some houses/apartments benefit from it more than others (e.g. if the bedroom doesn't get much air circulation).

    • +5

nope. If you're a light sleeper avoid.

    • +1

At the lowest power level (which I use 90% of the time), it's not bad. I get used to it very quickly, it's not an obnoxious sound so most likely your brain will tune it out after a few minutes. It's definitely no louder than any other fan and is probably more efficient at pushing air, so if you can tolerate a Kmart fan then this should be perfectly fine.

    • +3

Find a use for one of those XM3/QC35 headphones that everyone here has bought by now.

  • +2

Cheap compared to Dyson (and probably with much less BS as well).

    • +1

Dyson fans are garbage, I bought the desktop one and returned it. Noisy and not effective. Just a gimmick — avoid at all costs, even if they are heavily discounted.

  • +1

You can buy old vornando's really cheap off Catch etc. Get one cheap because all they are is a very strong, powerful fan in a small form factor (but pretty noisy).

I would feel ripped off paying $150 for a vornando but $50 or $60 might be about right. The new versus old versions are just higher spins per minute probs, and slightly sleeker form factor.

    • Great idea but do you have any links to any items? Would love to do as you suggest.

      • -2

Start here for $117 and then wait for clearance sales on Catch. No you can't just pick up a really cheap vornado any day of the week.

        https://pricehipster.com/?q=vornado

        • +1

The $117 is for small one 533, the one on catch is 633 medium size, this one is 660 large.

        • Cheers. $150 (costco or after discount) seems to be the price floor for the 660 model (the big one)

    • I read Vornado went total cheap ass chinsey w/ the new ones… the old ones supposedly had better motors/plastic/assembly, and no rattles.

  • I have one of these, amazing unit. I use it mainly while performing on stage and it great, but it also moves a lot of air at home, so we only need to have one air con on instead of 3. A little noisy on the highest setting but I usually run it on two.

Well worth the price in my mind, I believe they come with a 5 year warranty.

  • -1

This code can't be applied to your order.

  • Does it perform better than a pedestal fan when there's no aircon in the room?

    • -3

      Of course.

  • +1

Excellent product and price and worth the investment, whether you have air con or not the improvement of your room conditions using this will impress you.

  • amazing!! had also 20 AUD voucher from Ebayplus.
costed me 138.40 with Local Pick up .

needed a fan so badly! will use it with an Aircon in the lounge - to blow air into my room from the lounge.
Much better than sleeping in bed with an Air con right on top of you

    • +9

Much better than sleeping in bed with an Air con right on top of you

Why don't you mount your air cond on the wall like the rest of us?

      • +1

Maybe because he has ducted aircon?

      • +3

Would get along well with this guy

      • +2

thats the point… with amazing Aussie standards for bedroom sizes like 3*3 metres…aircon on the wall will make me sick every night.
I am happyI don't have aircon in the room.

Sleep very well when Lounge Aircon is working and the fan blows Air into my room from the lounge.

        • +1

…with amazing Aussie standards for bedroom sizes like 3*3 metres…

To give your criticism a bit of context, bedrooms here don't necessarily need to be large because our average home size is amongst the largest in the world, so we can afford to have bedrooms that function purely as bedrooms.

  • I have an old Mistral version of this pedestal fan.

It’s height adjustable and you can direct the fan towards the roof like the Vornado.

Does a great job at circulating air around the room, too.

May not have the small footprint and be as compact but it basically doubles as both, so may be seen as a better option for some.

  • I had one . Recommend.

  • -1

Sheesh, it's just a fan people. Get a $30 bunnings one.

    • +6

I bet you buy the scratchy toilet paper too.

      • +2

        Sandpaper?

        • +2

          From bunnings.

      • +2

Toilet paper? Luxury. You've got two hands.

        • +2

Plumber fees for water hose connection is too expensive.

    • -5

People paying this much for snake oil claims about whole room circulation is proof we need to teach better science in school.

  • I received order and payment pending, has anyone got theirs orders through?

    • yep mine was confirmed etc. within 20 mins of purchase.

  • The two computers in my room are generating heaps of heat and my room doesn't have an aircon. Is there any point in getting one of these? My understanding is it will just blown the hot air around my room? What if i point the fan towards the door, will the hot air get blown out of it?

    • On low speed, it will be just as effective as a $10 fan.

    • you will only generate more heat because the fan is also producing heat, you should only point the fan at yourself.
might be worth getting one of those portable air-cons instead with a tube? to pump hot air elsewhere

  • I have one of these. That's a good price.

Useful for those hot sweaty nights and you don't want to run the AC all night.

  • +1

Why is this fan so hideously expensive

    • +1

Idk but I just went to Costco and bought one because it sounds good.

  • +1

Another recommendation here, we find it's small footprint great for the apartment use. It's also great at distributing air from the AC in the living room to the bedroom (which doesn't have AC). Makes a big difference when we go to bed and the bedroom has been cooled a lot.

  • I just picked one up from costco. Great fan. My house has poor cross ventilation and works great placed near a window or door when a cool change comes through to help get cool air into the house.
Also find it great in bedroom pointed up a ceiling. Moves air right through room. I much prefer it to a pedestal fan.

    • Is it still available from Costco?

      • Yes

  • Vornados get a tick from me, too. I have two, in different rooms, just put one on now. Within a minute, it's cooled the air in a lounge room, and a warm room has become very comfortably cool, with a nice gentle breeze. When I turn it off, the room stays cool for a decent period. I have used it with an air con but it's not necessary.
My trick is always turning it on to the highest speed for a minute and then drop it down to the first or second level. The sound of the fan is very consistent so it becomes background noise quite quickly.

  • I guess similar in principal to a tower fan, drawing cool air from floor level and circulating it up. I've considered a vornado in the past, however just use a coupe of tower fans.. Does feel like I'm missing out :P

For night time use, I use an arctic breeze usb desktop fan. Near on silent because there is no cage around the fan blades and it's a nice gentle breeze when set to a lower speed.

  • +3

Bunnings usually sells a 20cm or 30cm high velocity fan. It doesn't throw as far as this or is as quiet on high settings but it is only around 30 bucks

For those confus d about this fan… It essentially a fan engineered to throw a long distance, you'll feel the breeze 4-5 meters away indoors with this. You're suppose to point it on a ceiling corner and the fan will generate a breeze around the room, essentially making the effects of an aircon better.
