yeh this is the one that doesnt have HDMI connection

  • +16

Only problem is this is made by AT Games.

    • +13

That is ALL of the problem.

      • +2

This thing is hot garbage, do not touch

  • +3

    Curling 2010 sounds interesting.

Fight or lose needs a spoiler alert.

Checker. You start with one each.

Meatloaf rotation needs an oven controller.

  • +13

How does it not have Streets Of Rage? Plus these have horrible sound.

    • +2

Altered Beast always had horrible sound :p Rise from your grave.

      • Bise bom your bave!

    • +1

No streets of rage, no sale.

    • +1

The Streets of Rage IP has value.

Too rich for the likes of AtGames.

Okay so feedback is grim for this version. What would people recommend as a better alternative? I'm thinking this could be fitting as a Christmas present.

UPDATE: So this kit is crap, what would people recommend at the next nearest price point? :) Also interested in any of the other consoles. Is there any that combines all into 1, like some Chinese company who doesn't care about licensing laws?

    • +6

Raspberry Pi or modded SNES Mini.

      • +1

Thanks I'll go look for that.
It seems like someone bought this thing and negged me

      • Second this has hdmi, wifi uploads for roms. Can play n64, ps1 games too. Can buy and build one for about $30-50 depending on case and micro sd size

    • +2

If you have a PC, Kega Fusion and you can legally buy the ROMs off Steam (the emulator with the steam version is utter crap, thus why recommending Kega Fusion). Regular price is $25USD but it pops up on sale regularly. Called "SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics"

Easy solution is go buy a RetroPie box off ebay for about $100. Basically a Raspberry Pi but someone has done all the effort of installing the OS and all the emulators, you just have to copy the ROMs you accidentally find via Google onto it with a USB drive.

Or for the really lazy solution, just go to letsplaysega.com

      • Configuring a controller is little bit of a pain though and having a controller that matches the instructions is always a plus. I'd still never buy one of these "classic systems" though.

Having said that though, I've always lost interest in my PiracyPi setup within a few hours. I'm the right age but I didn't play any of those games when I was a kid, just a bit of PC.

I'm not getting the nostalgia feels that everyone else is.

        • I was mostly PC myself too. I never owned any of these but did play some at friends houses at the time.

We're probably the same age. If I purchase one it's more for my kids, I reckon they'd still enjoy it.

Pretty sure all the rom sites are now finished

        • +1

There's still one though, I can't remember the specific URL but its called, "the internet". Its pretty robust, new proxies and mirrors pop up everyday.

        • Lol. archive.org is all you need and 100% legal (for them, not us obviously, but who cares) because they use being classed as a “library” as a loophole. If you’re not using nointro etc. ROM sets, you’re a noob :P

There is an awesome Official emulation available on Steam, PlayStation, XBox and soon the Switch. Sega Mega Drive Classics.

      Steam
      PS4
      XBox
      Switch

They updated it earlier this year, improving it and adding a VR version for Steam, the VR version allows you to simulate sitting in a 90's themed bedroom playing a Mega-Drive under a CRT TV.

      Hyperkin model
      https://www.hyperkin.com/megaretron-hd-gaming-console-for-ge…
just been released, a few reviews are appearing on youtube now.
don't know if there are pre loaded games or not.
$50 American so likey $355 here in australia

      Analogue mega sg
      https://www.analogue.co/store/
      pricey and release april 2019
but SHOULD be the most accurate representation of original Mega drive given the technology employed for the console.
$189 American so likely $655 here

And then Sega themselves are releasing a mega drive classic that was supposed to be released this year in partnership with at Games but that relationship appeasrs to have been terminated a few weeks ago so it will be released also some time next year (also hopefuly in a better state for not having at games involved)
Hopefully will be around the same price as nes, snes and ps0ne classic ($100 to $150)

So I bought this when they first came out
The packaging is non existent & feels cheap.

The picture quality is atrocious, I ended up selling it quickly after.

If you're expecting hdmi Nintendo mini quality, it's not.
If you're expecting grainy memories, jump right in.

  • +3

Avoid this at all costs. I bought it and insole it right away.

The HD version is out and available from $115+. It also has wireless controllers and the ability to play some of the old cartridge games.

Ozgameshop and EB have it cheapest.

    https://ebgames.com.au/loot-232547-Sega-Mega-Drive-Flashback…

    • Is this version region locked for cartridges?

      • Im not sure tbh. I can only see that it plays Mega Drive games off original cartridges.

When you put a game in the slot and turn the system on, it will download the full game into memory and play it in the same emulator that the built-in games are played on, with all the same features — even save slots.

"I bought it and insole it right away."
It's so bad, James used it to line his shoes!

    • +1

TY for the heads-up. I would have been none the wiser and bought the shitty one otherwise.

  • +3

You'd be better off remembering your childhood than reenacting with this…

  • Need to wait for the proper mini version to come out.

  • Why does the description of the deal still have it listed as including two wireless controllers, despite it not?

I can roll with AV connection, I don't care that much, supergluing this to the back of the 19" tele I have in the kitchen and using a wireless controller while waiting for my shit to cook would be well worth 50 bucks, but the cord kills it for my personal usage unfortunately.

One can easily rag on the dodgy sound quality and AV cables, sure. Most definitely the AV cables. However, if I'm excited (genuinely) for the millionth re-release of the Mega Drive Collection to be coming to Switch early December, and I'm expecting to pay around 50 for it (60 RRP on eShop) for that, 47 bucks for a whole kit, with two controllers, and 80 odd games right out the gate, not to mention the ability to play most actual carts, I mean, (profanity), that's a good deal really. Yes, I know how bad the sound is, Green Hill Zone is NOT (profanity) Green Hill Zone on these things, but 50 bucks is 50 bucks and if I am (and I am) willing to spend 50 on 50 odd Mega Drive games on Switch, 50 bucks for more games and a whole entire dedicated console that can even play actual hardware is still a pretty good deal, even if it's an arguably inferior way to play them.

That being said, 100 bucks? Tell him he's dreaming. Only reason I'm not bothering to grab one is the aforementioned Switch collection coming so soon. Plus I have basically the same collection on PS3, 360, PSP, and PS2.

Edit: Actually, for only 8 bucks more, I'm tempted to grab this game https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Duke-Nukem-3D-16-bit-MD-Game-Car…, and then buy the clone console as a means to have yet another version of Duke in my collection.

  • Also I decided (profanity) it, and bought one. Cheers OP for the find.

With EB's return promise, I've got 10 days to play the shit out of it, and see if it's good enough / if I really want it, and I can just return it hassle free and get my dosh back. Seems pretty sweet to me.

  • Yo, I take it back. The audio on these is so much worse than I imagined, holy shit it sucks. And the picture is made for 4:3, but there's black lines on the top and bottom so it's got the widescreen look, but then that's stretched into 16:9 on my modern tele and the visuals are absolutely terrible. But the AUDIO IS ABSOLUTE TRASH HOLY CRAP.

Otherwise pretty fun. Let's hope that copy of Duke 3D from eBay 1. doesn't take two months to come and 2. actually works on it.

    • Are you hoping that your Duke Nukem doesn't take Forever?

      • The funny thing is, Duke 3D for Mega Drive came out in 98, which itself was obviously a couple years late, but it came out exclusive to Brazil. Some company called Piko or whatever who does repros, they got the worldwide rights to it in 2015 and started printing "cardtridges" of it for all versions of the Mega Drive and Genesis. It says it may not work on Retron 5 and whatnot, clone consoles, so I'm not really too confident it will work, but as far as Duke and taking forever goes, yeah, the game came out a couple years late exclusive to bumble (profanity) nowhere, and then nearly 20 years after that the rest of the world got it.
