What is Mesh WiFi?

Mesh WiFi systems consists of a main router that connects directly to your modem, and a series of satellite modules, or nodes, placed around your house for full WiFi coverage. They are all part of a single wireless network and share the same SSID and password, unlike traditional WiFi routers.

  • Wow. Great price compare to to other setups. Would love to see a side by side comparison review

    • i've read a few reviews and haven't read a negative one yet, if you do a quick google search you'll find heaps, not sure about comparisons but most reviewers were impressed, the common thread was that they found setup a breeze and performance better than expected, if you dig im sure someone would of compared them to the bigger players, if you find one be sure to link it, thanks

at under a $100 im taking the plunge

        Name checks out 😉

  • Novice question. Is it compatible with nbn hfc?

    • This is a router, main cube is to be connected to your modem with cat5 cable.

    alliexpress so plus 10% GST?

i bought from ebay when it was $119.99 before any coupon and extra 10% for GST now $129.99. very fast delivery, about 7 business days to Perth.

Product wise, i couldn't fault it. I expect less but it is amazing so far. no more death zone in our place. set up was a breeze.

just want to give people alternative.

    • god damn gst, you're right +10% - edited title, that applies to your link as well though? stock listed as offshore.. still those 7 days may be the clicher but that would be very unozbargainerlike

btw do you know if the bridge feature is available on all the nodes and not just the main one? i was thinking about wiring one node to my security system which sits on its own router atm

      • +1

yes mine was +10% too. so best to buy when there is 10% off coupon with EBAY that happen every now end then to counteract GST. Also you could always get ebay gift card @5-8% off. still cheaper from alliexpress if you can wait for longer delivery.

    • I bought mine from ebay too but it was a local seller. I paid 119 no GST and I also managed to use a 5% off coupon code. And it arrived in about 2-3 business days.

Tenda are quite a decent brand for budget networking gear. I stuck one of these a while ago in the back studio for a PoE camera and it works surprisingly well. Also helps with some of the wifi cameras too.

  • +10

I bought mine from ebay last week, paid about 119 less 5%. It's a cheap and cheerful unit and serves its purpose well. In my house the back bedroom was getting wifi drop-outs and flaky speed that was almost unusable. Now I get 90-100 Mbps in the main areas (AussieBB 100/40) and in the back between 50-70 Mbps, and the signal remains full strength no matter where I move in the house.

    Some pros and cons:

    • It is a router and wireless access point in one - so with my NBN I just plug the cable straight from the termination device, and has replaced the modem/router my ISP supplied.
    • It has 2 x 100 Mbps Ethernet ports in each unit, so you can plug in devices that are close by. In one of my remote units I've plugged my media centre PC that was previously using a wireless dongle.
    • Only catch is that the main unit will have one of its ports taken up by the WAN cable so you only have one free there. But you can move your devices the the other remote units.
    • This model only had 100 Mbps ports so look at the bigger MW6 one of you need gigabit Ethernet.
    • It does 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz wifi under the same SSID and devices roam seamlessly between the access points and frequencies.
    • One drawback which might be a deal breaker for some is that the wifi channels are fixed - 2.4 GHz is set to channel 6, and 5 GHz is locked to channel 40. I'm not sure about channel width either 20/40/80 Mhz and there's no ability to set anything. Pretty serious limitation especially if you have lots of "noisy" neighbours that are occupying those channels.
    • The interface is only through IOS or Android app. There's no web interface. The app itself is quite nice and well laid out. You can see connected devices and realtime throughput of each device. I haven't seen any flakiness with the app.
    • While it is a router, features are pretty barebones. It can do guest network, QoS and UPNP but those are pretty much just on/off options. It does DHCP but you can't manually assign addresses to devices. It can do limited port forwarding. You can specify custom DNS servers. Parental controls are available and you can block internet access to groups of devices, but it is manual or by schedule - not by quotas.
    • But at the end of the day setup was really easy and if you just want a plug and play type device without much fiddling then it is perfectly fine for what it does. If you are into customising settings and need more advanced features then you will need to perhaps put it behind a more advanced router, or look at the more expensive Google or Velop or whatever units that are 3-5x the price.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    • Great info. Thanks.

    • pretty surprising how basic the software/configuration is, have there been any updates to the firmware? is there an update function which checks on online service? or section where you can upload your own file?

looks like static ips will need to be setup on the devices themselves, not ideal but workable

judging by your second point is sounds as though the bridge feature is available on all nodes which is great, just need a switch or you can use the modem in bridge mode to hook up all your devices

      thanks for the info, appreciated

      • Hey sorry for the late reply.

Yes it checks online for firmware and has an update function but I haven’t seen any updates since I bought it.

Regarding static IPs - that might be a possible solution. You can’t define the range though, so it might end up assigning an IP which you have already used, although I’m not sure if it’s smart enough to check.

    • It is a router and wireless access point in one - so with my NBN I just plug the cable straight from the termination device, and has replaced the modem/router my ISP supplied.

I have a Netcomm NF18ACV - As a bloke that struggles with networking jargon, can I just plug straight into this and it will work?

      • Hey sorry for the late reply.
I think it depends on what type of internet service you have.

For me I have FTTC and I don’t need a modem, just a router. My ISP gave me the same Netcomm modem/router/access point as you, and the Tenda has replaced it as a router/access point.

For other types though you might still have to use the supplied modem/router and put the Tenda behind it. If you do this, you will have to turn off the wireless features of your modem/router otherwise both units will be broadcasting.

    • I've heard good stuff about it. The only thing I don't like is its specs:
      CPU1: Realtek RTL8197FNT (600 MHz)
      FLA1: 8 MiB (Winbond W25Q64VSIG)
      RAM1: 64 MiB (Realtek RTL8197FNT)
