Police Flashed Lights -Will I Get a Fine?

I was doing 60 in a 60 zone. Other cars were doing 55. I had to change lane to go into left lane. I pressed accelerator and must have gone to 80. As soon as I changed lane, I see lights go off behind me. I was turning left so I turned left while cops car was in right lane so it kept going straight.

Should I expect a Christmas gift in the mail?

  • They would have chased u down

    • I am fast 😉

  • You've literally got the police right behind you and you think the best thing to do is break the law? Seriously?

    • If I had seen them i would have kept going straight. I am not that dumb bro 🤔

They either flashed lights to say 'slow down' whilst on their way to a more important job, or they were just receiving a priority 1 job.
Whilst most of society only deal with Police during traffic incidents, they deal with a tonne more than traffic offences.

You will not be receiving a fine, but you should adapt your driving like you have been.

    • Yes i have been driving 14 years and this is first time this happened. And hopefully last. It was a long day and probably i was tired. Lesson learnt

      • lesson learn is when you are not worried about copping a fine but instead worried about what the real consequences for speeding are. ie. endangering the life of others and yourself.

  • I think that the situation is that the cops flashed you as a way of basically saying ‘oi!’ I’d think they would have actually made you stop and engaged you on the side of the road and given you a ticket, but that’s just my impression, I’m not 100% sure.

Thanks. I have learnt my lesson

So if other cars were doing 55 why would you need to speed up to 80 ?
I sure hope you get an infringement and learn from it - its plain stupid to risk your and others lives.

    • -1

Right. I am sure you have never done anything wrong. I have told a hundred times i went up to overtake someone and i was back to 60 within a second. Please keep your self righteousness to yourself. I asked for advice not opinion. Its a waste of time talking to keyboard warriors. I hope you get everything bad in this world too

      • -1

Right. As if that justifies breaking the law ! If you are already faster than other cars you wouldn't have to speed !
I didnt wish any 'bad' on you but for all the bad you wish on me, I hope you get twice as much. Now stop asking for advice and start waiting for the infringement.

  • is there not one copper who is also an ozbargainer?

Yes im one 34yrs service.. answer is no… your either stopped or your not… chances are the guys were simply heading too a job n had lights on…that said everyone makes mistakes op admits it… me I have a rule tell the truth when stopped ill never book you.. kids without seatbelts is my only exception…
Contrary too popular belief I have no quota, get no percentage of the ticket, im there too remind and educate .. not make money for the government.

  • cops flashing is a warning.

im a P plater forgot to put my lights on a night and got flashed turned them on and they just kept going.

not all cops are out to fine people

  • They flashed you because you really should not have done that but figured shit he probably had no choice but still should not have done that. I take it you don't drive a very police alert type of vehicle such as a supra or wrv lol.

  • expect it so if it does come it won't be a surprise.

  • You're lucky Krispy Kreme was probably having a sale.

  • Be prepared for dog the bounty hunter to come and arrest ur ass very soon

  • You will be fine but maybe be a bit more aware of your speed, unless you're in extremely fast car I doubt you just pressed the accelerator to change lanes and all of a sudden went from 60-80. Especially with a cop car around jeez, flashed you to tell you you're a (profanity).

    • It had ecoboost and it was not my car so it went quicker than i expected

      • Ecoboost kicked in, yo

OP broke the law because they just wanted to beat the traffic. OP claims that they needed to go to 80kmh in a 60 zone, where other motorists were travelling at 55kmh, to get in front of the left hand traffic to turn down OP's street. This means, that they likely (dangerously due how quick everything happened) needed to brake quickly to turn down OP's street. This would have meant that the traffic that was already in the left lane would have had to brake too, essentially cutting up the existing traffic.

OP claims that the police car didn't have enough room to get in the left lane to pull OP over. This reinforces the amount and proximity of traffic in the left lane, of which the OP would have caused to brake while turning. You're driving is more dangerous with your excessive speeding and then hard braking than your fictional scenario where someone is going 40 in an 80 zone. You're also likely to cause road rage with you disrupting the flow of traffic.

OP: You've mentioned in this thread you've learnt your lesson. Yet, you claim you could out run the police.

You also claim you've been driving for 14 years, you knew what to do (and the area). Depending on your vehicle (you claim a loan car), you'll be on the police's radar. I suggest you be patient and safely merge with traffic instead of pissing off other motorists. Driving is a luxury, not a right.

    Edit: Here's a paint reenactment.

    • Some people have so much time lol

      • Some people need to take more time..

    • And out running police was a joke. Please buy some sense of humor

      • Jokes should be funny.. Did you have a retort on the other points? ;)

Thanks to some of guys for good advice. I will request mods to close this as i will not be reading this anymore. Lots of ozbargainers feel they are Gods and they can judge everything so i hope if they ever break law, they suffer for it. I owned my mistake, will pay fine if i get it and will try better next time. But i am not a troll and help people. I suppose it is a good quality to have rather than bully people online and having no empathy for other persons' stress and suffering. I wish all the best except those who wished bad to me and others. Cheers

  • Hi mate

my best mate is a HWP. and if they were to fine you, they would've pulled you over. You are safe this time. But just be weary of your surroundings next time.

  • When you need to speed past cars to join left lane to make it to the turn, you know it is time to hire a driving instructor to learn to drive properly

  • I wouldn't worry about it. If all the drivers around you were keeping a 3 second gap with the car in front, you would of had room to merge. So its just as likely the police where pulling over all the other drivers for tail-gating.
