With a massive amount of bargains listed from sellers/companies not based in Australia…
Someone else's holiday is another person's bargain ;)

    • +58

11/11 is Remembrance Day, let's respect the members of our armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

      • +11

        Exactly what I was thinking!

        • +12

What an ignorant thing to say

        • -2

          Straight up bannable offence.

      • +4

Many businesses have been burnt by the public for trying to capitalise on Australia's most sacred day Anzac Day. I don't see how this day is much different if you had some respect. It should not be overshadowed by some Chinese made up shopping event. Any other day is ok.

        • +2

Chinese immigrants won't give a crap as they have no real understanding of the importance of observing Anzac Day or Remembrance Day, they only care about shopping online to 'celebrate' a completely manufactured occasion.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yea I'm not too sure how well any immigrant (Chinese or not) who didn't grow up in the local education system would understand Anzac/Remembrance Day..

Similar to an Aussie moving overseas and being expected to understand the significance of some local festival/event there too? Wouldn't expect it, unless they really took the initiative to truly immerse themselves into local culture.

      • +7

Let's both be respectful and enjoy bargains? Am I being disrespectful by buying something for a bargain today…?

      • +2

What did you do today in remembrance of your armed forces who have died in the line of duty? Apart from coming on OzBargin of course

    • +6

On the other hand, this is OzBargain.

FYI we'll also be looking at Black Friday/Cyber Monday in 2 weeks, which is traditionally an American shopping event but has gone global.

    • You've probably been down-voted by Chinese immigrants who are so fiercely patriotic they don't want to even live in their own country of origin. ;)

      • There are plenty of OZ live in China and some prefer to live there than here.

  • +20

Singles day? First time I've heard of it.

    Plenty of fleshlight deals?

    • +1

      cries internally

    • +1

Nah it's been a round forever. Pretty sure you can get a vaccination for it now though.

    • First time I've heard of it as well.

    • It's the biggest online shopping day worldwide and has been for years!

      • +3

Surely Black Friday sales were more well known.

        • singles day is significantly bigger than black Friday. Just we are only becoming more aware of it over here.

          • @gromit: I did say "were" :)

            • @smartazz104: yep you did, apologies. Even so that was only for a short time, even Black Friday's world wide thing is a relatively modern happening.

      • -2

It's the biggest online shopping day worldwide and has been for years!

No. Maybe you are thinking of China and some other parts of Asia.

        • +7

No. Maybe you are thinking of China and some other parts of Asia.

dollar spend-age wise, 'Singles Day' smashes Black Friday/Cyber Monday and any other online sale day you can think of

          • +3

@SBOB: Not "for years" as I was referring to in my comment. In China and some other parts of Asia, yes.

  • +3

I've got a dark joke re one of the above comments… But I'll shut up

    • +1

      say it…..

  • +1

I hope the sexy dragon calendar gets discounted.

  • Thanks!

  • As a rep finding deals for this is the hardest part 🤣

    • RN5 please

      • +4

Tough to get a competitive price but I will try.

  • is this sale at a record store?

  • +2

    These are on special

  • Hi all, anyone managed to find a good deal from reputable seller for xiaomi roborock S50?

    • I got one from ebay with PROPER10 2 days ago. Keep looking that product is in demand everywhere you'll find a good deal somewhere. Get the generation 2

  • -7

Is 11/11 not a day of Remembrance across the Commonwealth? A day do to honour those who sacrificed themselves during WWI. Shouldn't we reserve this date as a sign of respect? Why are we be promoting an un-Australian, Chinese shopping event so commercial enterprise can make a buck?

    Poor form.

    • +38

Coz this website is about bargains?

    • +16

Agreed with first part, but let's not forget about black fridays which is also un-australian & most people don't seem to have a problem with.

    • +33

Shouldn't we reserve this date as a sign of respect?

pretty sure people are capable of both respecting and remembering those from WWI, as well as living their day to day lives…
A store have some 'sale' doesnt automatically mean anyone that buys something is disrespecting someones great grandfather

We seem to find any excuse these days to be offended at things

      • +2

I agree. I always thought Australians are forward looking people and not backwards, probably the reason why Australia as a country hasn't developed as fast as other countries.

    • +5

What does shopping/bargains have to do with remembrance day? Nothing. They are completely unrelated. There is stuff airing on the telly tonight, do you recommend I boycott that also?

You might as well say being on this site during a sacred day is disrespectful….. unless this is just kneejerk racism at it being a Chinese sale day?

      • +8

I no longer hear anyone complaining about Easter or Christmas bargains on Christian holidays. Perhaps patriotism is the new religion these days.

      • unless this is just kneejerk racism at it being a Chinese sale day?

I suspect it's this, most of us are capable of commemorating remembrance day and also finding a good bargain!

  • +5

I wish Tinder will give singles day sales on their tinder gold subscription.

    • +4

Or you could do an open up to a girl by saying "Heyyy it's singles day and I'm an ozbargainer, can you increase my chances by 11%?"

      • smooth brah, smoooooothhh~~~

        why not 11.11% ;)

  • +1

I was browsing Instagram this morning and this ad showed up:

    https://imgur.com/a/SkkED2M

The ad was a video that mentioned "Happy Singles Day!" then shows what you see in the screenshot.

Oculus Rift for A$399. I know it's most likely a typo on the ad because it redirected me to the official Oculus Rift page and it was still A$599, but on the small chance it's not, I thought I'd share just incase there was maybe a coupon or something.

    • (profanity) me, I'd jump on one for that. How can they get my hopes up like this?!

    • $399 USA$ :/

  • +12

A country of 1.5 billion should have asked a country of 25 million when it would be appropriate to have their sales days…

    • Mercy please on those fragile hearts…

    • +7

I get the impression that China didn't force this on anyone, but rather other businesses just saw it as a way to get involved, so if you wanted to criticise anyone, it should be the businesses for deciding to get involved? They don't have to participate..

  • $11 per ticket at Event using discount code "SINGLES"

    • $10 is the normal CineBuzz price here in the Hunter. I don't know whether to be happy that we get a cheap price to begin with, or sad that all of the "bargain" tickets on OzBargain and via Telstra are worthless to us.

  • +6

It's definitely a remembrance day. A day to remember that I'm still single. A sad day all round. Until, of course, I get a major bargain (like 50% off at Geek) and I'm happy as Larry again!

  • +3

Singles as in 1 1 1 1? I'm sure they have no intention on hurting Remembrance Day.

  • Why do we have a day to celebrate zero (profanity) given?

  • +3

One step closer towards ào bā gēn becoming a reality.

  • +1

men:women ratio in China is around 117:100 due to preference for boys and possibly infanticide. No wonder they have to have singles day.
    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/14/world/asia/china-men-marr…

    • +2

In Chinese culture, Men will not date a women if they are more successful than them. That's why you see alot of successful women in china that are single as oppose in the western culture.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=irfd74z52Cw

I'm seriously considering taking a trip to china so I can snag a great catch so I can be a stay home dad for the rest of my life!

      • +2

The women want a man who is at least as equally successful as them. No matter what they say.

Most Chinese female PhDs I know wouldn't even consider dating a non-PhD. It would be lowering their standards.

I've seen a small handful of exceptions among my circle of Chinese PhD friends, but the relationships didn't last.

So just make sure you're on the same level as the successful women, or you'll just be a plaything for a short while, until they can "upgrade" to a man at their level.

        • In China, a man does not want a woman at their level, they want someone beneath them so they can take care of them and protect them.

So therefore a woman in china will not find a man at their level because they rarely exist.

          • +1

@Homr: That's why the stereotype is that a woman getting a PhD is a one way ticket to being an old maid.

That said, I have five close female Chinese friends with PhDs. Every single one of them, without exception, married a guy with a PhD. Some of the husbands are Chinese, some were from overseas, but every single one of them has the same level of education.

          • +4

@Homr: Pretty much every where in the world women want to marry up, men want to marry down.

        • +1

And here I've been watching every episode of The Big Bang Theory believing a relationship between beautiful waitress and a geeky scientist was possible…

        • +1

Why is a PhD considered successful? Smartest /successful people I know don’t need overpriced qualifications to do what they do.

          • @biozet: In China, qualifications matter. Both in finding a job and finding a partner.

            • @[Deactivated]: So… I’m a postdoc/scientist. Single. Asian ethnicity. Got friendzoned after dating for a few months. She’s got a bachelors degree.

I actually don’t care what qualifications a girl I like has. As long as she’s intelligent, caring, a bit silly/nerdy and sporty/outdoorsy. Obviously good looks is a bonus.

Regarding 11.11 I didn’t buy anything as I didn’t have anything in particular.

            • @[Deactivated]: But don’t you think qualifications rarely indicates aptitude or ability?

              • @biozet: There’s a strong correlation between advanced degrees and ability. But they’re not everything.

Unless you’re in China, where they are indeed everything in terms of social standing.

  • I was looking for shops to do $11.11 on smaller consumer electronics like how they did the xiaomi bluetooth mouse for 11.11usd back when it was like 30usd
Ah well, next 11/11 day I guess, I'll probably need a new phone by then maybe a redmi note12 with a $20 coupon from somewhere

  • +1

Are you single, Scrimshaw, I am.

There's no Mrs Scab or baby Scabs here.

    • +1

      Master Scab!

  • I don't know about others but 11.11 sale feel like flop to me.

    • I think what most people are waiting for are for local deals, and for local retailers what they're signed up to is Click Frenzy, and after that Black Friday.

So yeah, CF is still the star of the show. That's coming up very soon. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/pages/click-frenzy

      • Yep, well we need to re word that banner to Global Chinese Shopping festival :)

    • Hardly a flop but possibly the things you were looking for were simply not on sale. From linked article:

By the end of the day, sales hit 213.5 billion yuan ($42.5 billion) - surpassing the total purchases from last year's Singles Day, according to figures posted online by Alibaba Group.

That's a lot bigger than last year's Black Friday / Cyber Monday. Australia's Click Frenzy would not even compare.

      • +1

As I said, For China for sure, but for us Australians it a flop, unless you want to buy a
        Jack David ;)

        • Alright, subjectively from your perspective, it might be a flop. I didn't end up buying anything either. However from the scope of global ecommerce, it was one of the biggest shopping event this year.

          • -1

@scotty: If you define China and south-east Asia as global.

            • +2

@tranter: or perhaps he's just defining everywhere on earth as global…
              seems like a suitable definition

biggest single day in e-commerce on earth…seems like a strange thing to get argumentative over ;)

            • +2

@tranter: Quite a few Australian companies participated. Myer even had 10% off site wide yesterday as its 11.11 promotion even though no one posted the deal. It's becoming a global phenomenon.

              • @scotty: Do you know if the Myer sale included iPhones? If so, it would have been a popular OzBargain post.

I can see a mention of it on topbargains but it doesn't say what the exclusions were.

                • @tranter: Does not appear to be excluded. This is extracted from the email I've received:

                  Offer: 10% off Sitewide*
T&Cs: Excludes clearance, cosmetics and home fragrance. There is no code for this offer, discount will be applied at checkout
                  Valid: Sunday, 11 November from 7:00am - 11:59pm AEDT

Myer could take the iPhones off-line though. Unfortunately I wasn't online much on Sunday to check.

      • Scotty, where are the vast majority of sales from? (as in sales by country)

    • The 10% GST on imports is hurting all the great Chinese deals we used to get. Stopped me from snagging some 11.11 bargains
