Aussie Broadband Slow Fixed Wireless Speeds

Hi guys,

Any of you guys also on a fixed wireless 50mbs plan with Aussie broadband?

I ran 4 tests starting at 9:01pm and the results were:

(pc was plugged directly into NBN box)

Ping Download Upload
19 2.83 4.58
28 6.56 5.87
20 5.71 4.84
30 3.2 3.71

Slower then my old ADSL speeds at times! and it feels that way when I'm using my pc, I can't even play rocket league lol
I think they're selling out soon, is there any other isp's you guys recommend for fixed wireless?

I'm with ABB FW but thankfully our tower is not over subscribed.

Nothing to do with ABB. The FW network is congested in many areas. Try a different ISP but I guarantee 100% you will have the same issues.

NBN needs to enable more bandwidth to the FW network.

Is your tower serviced by a microwave link?

Having a 50/20 plan on FW is a waste of money. Was never designed to deliver those speeds to the masses. I recommend a 25/5 plan and save some dough.

I'm on 25/5 and I know it's outside peak times but this is very typical at most times and I'm 200km from Melbourne

I do get around 47 mbps download during day time hours on the 50/20 plan.

Yup that's tower congestion and no ABB. I 'typically' get in the low to mid 40's down but it does slow down from about 4PM onwards. Having said that I have noticed that speeds aren't too bad over the last few weeks but I suspect they've upgraded the tower.

  • Yep those results are pretty similar to my evening speeds on ABB 50/20 FW.

I remember the day it was installed, first thing I did was a speed test and went wow that's way faster than the ADSL speed. Then I did another test at night and was like wow that way slower than ADSL :P

Like tighbottom says its under provisioning by NBN that's the issue. I logged a call with ABB, it was forwarded to NBN who more less confirmed the problem with their response that the tower was scheduled for upgrade Q3 2018.

I was regularly getting evening download speeds in the 2 to 4 range, SBS on demand would keep buffering, Netflix would drop the bitrate so low you could hardly make out the picture, lately its been closer to 8Mbps. Last night, about the time of your tests, I actually got an "insane" result of about 22Mbps, did it a couple of times to be sure. I'll test again tonight but I suspect it was an aberration, maybe one of the other towers that microwave relay through my tower was down or something? Looking up my tower at https://web.acma.gov.au/rrl/register_search.main_page I can see NBN has added some more 2.3GHz frequencies lately and has some recent licences for 3.5GHz that have not yet been installed.

Like ozhunter I get very good daytime speeds and I've been working at home a lot so I kid myself the extra $10 a month for 50/20 is worth it.

I'm participating in the Choice broadband monitoring program - little box plugged into router that does regular speed tests. To date they have just been aggregating the results but they keep saying we'll soon have access to our individual results. Hopefully when that happens it will include historical results and I'll see an improvement in evening speeds.

  • I have noticed my night speed has dropped significantly this week.

  • After reading the recent Kogan data updates, I wondered why I even buy NBN. FOr 25 bucks there’s so much data, I get the same value getting Kogan mobile for me wife and kid than nbn, plus 3 phone plans.
So consider how much you use, and if some of the mobile deals can suit your needs.

  • I'm on FW too, I don't call my results as results, I call them my insults. On occasions my insults have been in the Kb, not the Mb. Also, since when was upload made faster than download??? If my upload wasn't so shocking as well, I'd set up a server here. :-)

Providers are all merely providing what NBNCo makes available, or unavailable to be more honest. The providers all know there is too much over sell of FW connections but NBNCo says there is no problem, some slow speeds may be experienced during peak. [cough]

To really get a speed boost, there's this service (rare but it's out there), it's called Asymmetric digital subscriber line but it needs two feeds of atomic number 29.

  • Hi everyone! Unfortunately, Fixed Wireless customers do suffer sometimes from nbn tower congestion prior to reaching our service. We do want to hear if you're experiencing slow speeds though regardless, as we will continue to advocate to get the tower that you're connected to upgraded.

Symptoms of Fixed Wireless congestion: Decent speeds during the day, slows down during the night. Now, nbn have stated that towers with customers experiencing less than 8Mbps at peak will definitely be scheduled for an upgrade.

Symptoms that are not consistent of congestion: Extremely slow speeds all day long. It might be congestion, but if your download is a sickly 3Mbps or lower all day long, there may be something else going on with the connection.

Now, we know that congestion is a pain, and the upgrades are very slow to occur. Most of our leadership team, including Phil are on Fixed Wireless so they know the pain too. This is what we're trying to do for our customers. https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/blog/aussie-broadband-pus…

If you're experiencing any speed issues with your Fixed Wireless, or have any further questions, please contact our customer service team on 1300 880 905. We don't troubleshoot on social media/Ozbargain. Cheers!
