Geeze that's a good price. If you won't be getting a 4K TV anytime soon, this should hold you over for a few years.

4K bluray and Netflix available though still as well.

    • there aren't many exclusive 4K xbox one X titles around so yes, cheap gaming for existing titles eg halo , gears of war 4 …all cheap now.

      • there aren't many exclusive 4K xbox one X titles around

Are there any? (Legitimate question - googling couldn't find any).

        • +1

Here's the list of games that will benefit when run on the X, it also list which will be 4k too

          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_One_X_enhanced_ga…

As for exclusives, I'm not sure.

        • Exclusives? not really. But plenty of games run in 4K as listed as the guy below. The best part is old games running at 4K. What's better than sitting down on the coach to play oblivion in 4K?

      • There are sufficient number of XB1X enhanced titles. Some of the latest ones:

        • Red Dead Redemption 2
        • Forza Horizon 4, Forza Motorsport 7, Forza Horizon 3
        • Assasins Creed: Odyssey & Origins
        • Battlefield V, COD: Black Ops 4
        • PUBG, Fallout 76, COD: WWII

Gears 4 did also get XB1X enhanced treatment.

Get the full list of XB1X enhanced games here.

      • Depends on what you mean by "exclusive". A number of the backwards compatible games have received X enhancements. You can play RDR1 in 4K, which looks amazing even today.

Playing Morrowind and Oblivion at 4K is also awesome. If you can live without mods, it's pretty much the best way to play them.

There's a number of benefits outside of "exclusive current gen games".

    • is there any upside for general performance from an xbox one x over the s?
      even if only in 1080?

      • Yes.

      • Yes MASSIVE performance boost.

On a 1080p TV, games downsample from 4K (or whatever their X enhanced resolution is) to 1080p. So in a game like RDR2, the image is super crisp, with antialiasing from both supersampling and the in-game TAA.

You also get all the other benefits such as improved performance in all games (massively so in FH4 with the 60fps option), faster loading times etc.

        • Read my reply below. Massive isn't true. I used to own XB1S and did a number of comparison checks (XB1S vs XB1X). On 1080p, you simply are not getting much XB1X benefit (except for a handful of games supporting 1080p@60fps).

You really cannot say that 4X FSAA offers massive improvement over TAA, MSAA or FXAA (there is only so much AA can offer - let's not forget TAA doesn't disappear if you use XB1S). Massive performance boost is not true either (not even for RDR2). When 4X FSAA is employed, you only get 30fps. Sure, running at that Saint Denis street as DigitalFoundry pointed out does show XB1X is better at keeping 30fps, but honestly, is that REALLY what you do in that game in Saint Denis all the time? Let's also not forget, for chapter 2 fight cut scene, XB1X for some reason have frame drop issue (worse than any other console) - granted it was at 4K.

If 4X FSAA is so MASSIVE, why don't PC gamers do that using 1080Ti or 2080Ti? Honestly, even 1440p is better than 4X FSAA down sampled to 1080p.

To be honest, using XB1X, I didn't find that cut scene frame drop being an issue NOR the Saint Denis running being impressive.

          • @netsurfer: It's more about resolution than AA - the leap from 864p on the Xbox One S to 2160p in a game like RDR2, is massive. That's 6.2X the resolution over the base console, at (mostly) 30fps.

      • Short answer: Unless the game supports 1080p@60fps, you get 4X FSAA (for 1080p) @ whatever fps XB1X is capable of doing at 4K for that game (i.e. ~30fps).

        Long answer. The improvements are:

        1. Supersampling down to 1080p. Assuming it is 4K SS down, that basically means 4X SSAA (more commonly known as FSAA) to 1080p. Do bear in mind that most games have some form of AA (i.e. TAA, MSAA, FXAA) so while you get a better AA (FSAA is the best AA), you are still limited to 1080p.
        2. For games which support 1080p@60fps - then you get the 60fps advantage. Forza Horizon 4 supports 1080p@60fps BUT for someone with a 4K TV, you would prefer 4K@30fps over 1080p@60fps for that game. Not many games do this. Most games care more about 4K support on X (so 30fps).

For 2017 games, the difference isn't big to be honest. But for 2018 games, there is another factor in play. A lot of games can only do 1080p dynamic resolution for XB1/S (and often with a real resolution of 960p). Problem is, is it really worthwhile to spend the extra just to get 1080p@30fps (for most games) with 4X FSAA?

one HUGE factor for me is Dolby Atmos, I'm a HUGE fanboy and it really works (example video i've made), and the One S will not support it on some titles.

Which is a HUGE PITA because you kinda find out after you buy the game. The Box will say Dolby ATMOS supported, but there's no real defined list (that i've found, apart from random forums) to state what the One S can process. So I'm actually going for a One X deal over this weekend if there's a good one and selling off my OzBargain Minecraft edition One S :P

        • I think there are only a handful of games that support Atmos (list from Feb here) but shouldn't the One S process them anyway?

As a side note, I've found the Atmos for headphones processing sounds worse than the Dolby processing from a Turtle Beach DSS2 (haven't tried an Atmos game though).

I guess it's a niche market to be playing games in a full Atmos theatre without headphones.

          • @ShortyX: my bad, it's only the Tomb Raiders, here's a community list updated last month of atmos titles. For me Tomb Raider was THE game that I wanted to play on it, I love the franchise, and was going to re-play through Rise of the Tomb Raider with atmos before Shadow of the Tomb Raider then got a shock. Oh well bigger problems to have, and easy fix i'll grab an X.

As for headphones, yeah having stereo driven drivers try to artificially implement what minimum 8 speakers are doing in a room setup I wouldn't expect it to be amazing.
My Galaxy S9+ even has a Dolby Atmos mode… it's more of a gimmick with stereo speaker devices but in a full setup a huge leap in innovation.

            • @camshandez: https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2017/12/18/xbox-one-…

That list seems to give people the impression XB1S can do it too? Given Rise of the Tomb Raider is in GamePass, if you have XB1S, you should be able to test it (since GamePass is $1 for a month for new user right now - just create a new user account - your other accounts on the same console can share that GamePass). I don't see why you must have an X to support it (since sound isn't something that needs heavy GPU).

So XB1S cannot do ROTR with Atmos?

              • @netsurfer: I own both latest tomb raiders, set xbox to atmos and receiver to atmos, showed the signal from xbox was atmos compatible, stand up on chair and nothing through ceiling speakers.

Onlt the tomb raider games, and that's what the avs forum states. They're a pretty graphic intensive series, so makes sense the s would struggle with object oriented sound

Subjective, non technical feedback here. On Fortnite, I instantly noticed better graphics from the One X on a 1080p gaming monitor compared to a One S. Also, I showed Black Ops 4 to a mate who uses a One S and he said “dammit, it looks really good… now I have to get a One X”.

After I sold a Minecraft Xbox One S and the included games from the Xbox One X bundle, the changeover price was quite low so worth it for me.

    • Xbox one S can upscale to 4k and does HDR in game. Also 4k uhd disc playback.

It's a good compramise if you don't need true 4k game support.

My $230 aldi special from last year is going great on hisense 65n7.

Any idea if these will appear on the ebay store? A friend missed out on the Xbox one x deal. And this seems like a reasonable deal if you don't want to spend as much.

  • these also include a digital tv tuner.

probably the best deal for an xbox one s going around.

ebay prices are still at 399, but there is a 20% off code for microsoft, so not expecting them to drop those prices to 299.

    • EB Games on eBay has this. If this comes under the 15% sale happening this evening, can get it cheaper.

  • Waiting for a kick ass One X + 8 games to reappear.

The EB deal for $348 with Battlefield V, Forza Horizon 4 and the Fortnite code seems like the best deal going for an S, if it's still in stock when the 15% off code goes live. 15%, 5% Paypal codes if you have them, and Cashrewards on top:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xbox-One-S-1TB-Console-3-Games-X…

  • Wow. If we weren't already waiting on a Nintendo and PS4 under our tree this year, I'd definitely pick this up.

  • just bought it. Great deal. Kinda sucks that the games are digital download.

  • Already have an Xbox, a Pro, and a Switch, and everything last gen as well.

But (profanity) damn if this ain't tempting for the shit of it.

  • They all seem to be $279 now.

    • Argh. Post updated. I'm sincerely apologising to all who bought it eagerly at $299 yesterday thinking it was a great deal… You might be able to cancel and re-purchase again.

      • will probably better deal by next year :), you already did your part.

  • There are some good game deals on the US microsoft site. Any idea how to actually buy from there though?

Tried a vpn, couple of different credit cards and paypal. come up with a payment error every time so far though.

    • Edit. Deleted.

    • @Duff5000

I have deleted my post because I wasn't sure whether it would breach Ozbargains ToS (I haven't read them so I have no idea how strict they are about such things).

I have sent you a copy by DM (a new Ozbargain conversation) with detailed, step-by-step instructions, how to create a US PayPal account.

But I'm not sure you received it (if you could let me know I'd appreciate it). BTW, I've saved it, so I can send it to you again, if you like.

Just check your messages. If you follow the details exactly you should have no problems.

Good luck (let me know how you go if you try it).

Ps. You don't need a paid VPN to do this. You can use a trial/limited version (eg VyprVPN gives you 500 Mb per month which is plenty) as you only need it during the signup process, and possibly for creating new US accounts, and signing up to other services like Netflix, Hulu, etc.

But, for streaming video without buffering you'd almost certainly need a paid VPN.

  • isn't fortnite free to download on consoles? if so, who would pick that!

Jesus… All Halo games, Gears 4, Sea of Thieves (All of them digital as well, my preferred media) and the console for $279… I don't think I can pass that up!

  • So…. my last xbox was the original, which additional game is actually good? Not that interested in epic online play.

  • Had to jump on this, been thinking about added an Xbox One S to the collection for a while now. mostly for game pass and EA Access.
