  • Is this better than Delonghi Automatic machines?

      Yes.

I just bought another BES920 during yesterday's eBay sale. I've had a number of different machines over the years (including 4 different breville) and the BES920 is by far the best.

From an ease of use perspective, you can't beat it. You can texture the milk and pour the espresso shot at the same time and after a bit of tweaking, it's really hard to get a coffee wrong. You can set it on a timer to turn on at the same time every day, etc. Very user friendly.

You can go down the route of buying a 'proper' entry level Italian machine, but from my experience, they're not that easy to use on a daily basis. Plus, you need to wait for them to warm up, they don't have dual boilers and have inconsistent temperatures and inconsistent coffees. They're great if you're trying to perfect the art of coffee, but if you're just after decent, consistent good coffee, then this machine is hard to go past.

        • I just bought one recently but struggling to get a nicely flowing coffee.
Which coffee do you use and with which settings on the smart grinder for two shots?
Do you use the razor provided after tamping? Thanks.

          • @Rosace: IF it isn't flowing nicely, try grinding less finely? It's really all about experimenting!

Waiting for another TGG eBay coupon to buy this. $80 more than yesterday's sale price.

This or the barista express for a complete coffee machine noob

    • this. but really, not that much difference.

This one doesn't include the grinder and has two boilers which means you can be making the coffee while texturing your milk. With this one, you will need a separate grinder.

In my opinion, just spend the extra couple hundred and be done with it. It takes a bit of practice, but once you get it right, its cafe quality (both this and the express can do this).

In fact, I'm pretty sure I've entered the realm of coffee snobbery after owning this machine…its very hard to find a cafe bought coffee that matches the ones I make.

      • Cheers. I live in an apartment so bench space is limited at the moment so might go with the express If there only difference is saving time with this one vs having a grinder built in the other
