Google's nest hello ~$280 delivered from bhphotovideo a must have if you own the Google hub. Not sure how it compares to ring but I'm giving it a shot as it will show video of front door up on Google home hub.

  • FWIW:
16-24 VAC, Requires a 10 VA transformer and doorbell wiring; and
US$70 p/a to save the past 5 days (https://nest.com/au/cameras/nest-aware/ - otherwise it's live video only)

How is this a 'must have' if you've never tried it?

  • +3

way to complicated to install with transformers etc, IMHO not worth the hassle compared to RING

I don't think you read the description, it's a MUST have.

    • Depends on your situation, I ran my transformer cable straight through wall into my garage and into a power point which was all I needed. Happy with the link in to Google homes.

My complaint is that there could be a few seconds delay between a doorbell ring and the Google home triggering. Also some delays with speech whenever talking to someone at the door, and that's through my 50/20 NBN. My wifi is not the best though, would have preferred Ethernet.

Delays haven't been a big issue for any circumstance though, have been able to talk to postie at the door on a number of occasions.

I had one installed by an electrician. I love how these notify me on my Google Home and Home Mini, "xxx is at the front door". The facial recognition is pretty good during the day, but a bit of a hit and miss during night time. The name also pops up on the notification on my iPhone / Watch.

    • @blackwalnut - Ring can't integrate with your Google Home Hub, which is why people may be veering toward Nest instead.
I was dead set on a Ring until I got the Home Hub.
The Nest Hello does tend to get slightly better reviews overall as well.

      • thanks, I would actually love to get one, but looks like an install by electrician is required. like the idea that you can add to google home etc.

Just installed one of these today. A must have if you're a part of the Google Ecosystem.

You can tell your Chromecast or Android TV to show the front door and your Google Homes act as a doorbell throughout your house.

Grab this from Jaycar- does the job beautifully.

A must have if you always have strangers at your door I guess, and don't have a peep hole or can't install a peep hole. Otherwise a normal doorbell isn't even a must have as you can knock.

Maybe more so a must have if your want to let people in your house using the locks etc

      • Jeez you sound like my grandparents when we tried to get them to use a mobile phone….

Does your peephole tell you who's at your door while you're at work?
Or record the creepy burglar who's been lingering around your house while you're away or while you sleep?

        • +1

Why do I need to know who's at my door while I'm at work? I have a security system for burglars while I sleep or while I'm away. A camera inside my house too. Not sure why a doorbell suddenly makes my house secure lol. You sound like my naive cousin who thinks spending money on new things is better than tried and proven methods haha.

          • @onlinepred: Is your security system an alarm, or is it cameras?
If it's cameras, then yes, there is no need to buy a doorbell like this.

All these kinds of gadgets for the home are 50% gimmicky and 50% functionality though.

With regards knowing whos at your door while you're at work, a lot of burglars knock on people's doors to check if people are home first - you can actually answer the door over your phone to tell them you'll be right there etc.

But there's lots of other, less sinister, functions to that.
Like if you're taking a dump and your mate calls to your door and you grab your phone and tell them you'll be out in a minute…! :P

            • @Deviner: Yea got internal cameras pointed on entrances only, I don't have friends so I guess I'm good haha

              • @onlinepred: I got one because I didn't have a doorbell. So might aswell get one with extra functionality that also ties into my Google Home setup.

Seems handy to me. Smart doorbell features + security cam all in one.

                • @antigravity83: Yea for sure, but then you should get a smart door lock to make use of the security cam as a doorbell more useful. So maybe a MUST HAVE if you don't have a doorbell and WANT to spend much more than a normal doorbell. So really not a must have at all, but a nice to have.

  • Few dollars cheaper from newegg if anyone is still keen on one since bhphotovideo got ozbargained by the looks of it.
