Original $30 Off $75 Minimum Spend On Newegg Deal post

I've been wringing my hands for weeks over buying a router for an AiMESH node vs a PCE-AC68U/58BT to match my DSL-AC68U.
Could be wrong but this deal seemed like a no brainer to me, especially given the RT-AC68U is still so expensive.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2018

  • a noob question, is this router compatible with NBN fttn?

    • Yeah. NBN supplies the modem, you run an ethernet cable from that to this router, connect to the router (via wifi, or another ethernet cable), log into the user interface (192.168.0.1 or similar, usually is on the serial no sticker), apply security settings and give ur network a sick name (not in that order obviously) and you are off and racing.

      • If with Optus NBN coax the home phone needs an Optus router. You can put a small switch between the NBN modem and fork 2 routers from that. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1.
The Optus modem handles the phone and Asus rt68 handles the net. Just when rebooting Optus modem should come online last so there are no condlicts.

I don't think it's ideal just to plug the router into the supplied router. This would create a double nat. You could live with it but it's a bit dirty. I bridged my supplied modem with the ac68u I was using with adsl and it works really well. The only neg was that when bridging the supplied modem I lost the ability to use its voip port. I had to get a voip phone that plugs into the router. Some of the bigger nbn suppliers dont give out sip details so you need to use their supplied modems unbridged. This seems like a ripper deal.

All routers are compatible with any form of internet connection. However you need a modem specific to the connection type and that is normally supplied by the ISP. Most ISPs supply the modem in the form of a combined modem/router.

NBN FTTN requires a VDSL2 modem. Your ISP will likely provide you with a VDSL2 compatible modem/router. Some ISP supplied modem/routers can be put in bridge mode, so they are only a modem, then you can connect the ISP supplied modem to the Asus router's WAN / Internet port.

You can see a full list of ISP (and NBN compliant) modem/routers here… https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

  • So this will have a US power plug and require a adapter?

  • Noob with this AiMesh and Asus routers. On the Asus site for compatible AiMesh routers list (https://www.asus.com/AiMesh/), it says that the model number needs to be RT-AC1750 B1. From the Newegg site, the model for this router is RT-AC1750. So is this router "AiMeshable"?

I have the T-Mobile version of this router, i flashed the firmware back to Asus and it has the aimesh option there. I dont use that as it is just a bridge for me.

I was wondering the same thing and they are two separate models even on the ASUS website. Based on what I have read I dont think this OP's one is AiMesh compatible.

from what i can see this model is not Mesh capable - only the B1 version is
I have tried using Mesh on a T-Mobile AC68u flashed back to Asus firmware and had issues

The brand new 66u is $98 in this website. Also there is ac3200 version for $220.

Is asus so much better than dlink?

    • Cheers for that, ended up getting the AC-66U B1 for $110.64 delivered. Figure it's worth the little extra over a refurbished one, and will flash it right away with Asuswrt-Merlin.

  • Anyone knows if this model has bandwidth control?

    Thanks
