Extra 30% When Redeeming Points for Charges (up to 0.963%) @ American Express

1060

I noticed this morning on my Amex Essentials card that the annual redeem points has been boosted for shop small purchases.
This is the same as last year.. so if you have a bunch of points you’d like to redeem for a cash credit now’s the time. It’s much better than the usual rate.

I've been saving my points since this time last year.

    • Me too, was hoping they would do it again! Paid off :-).

  • Is this shown on the card offers anywhere ?

  • It use to be 130,000 points for $1,000 statement credit. Now it is 200,000 points for $1,000 statement credit? When did this happen?

    • Sounds like the devalue they were planning for next year. Need to check mine to confirm if it is the same.

      • Looks like this must have happend earlier, had I known I would have claimed my points.

On my David Jones card I cannot redeem points for charges but on my Explorer card I can. Works out to be 133 per $1 when redeeming as opposed to 130 per $1 when claiming $1,000 in statement credit.

        • On my David Jones card I cannot redeem points for charges

          You can, but it's not worth it. It's like 20 000 points/$100. DJs stuff is 13100 points/$100.

@kerfuffle: I don't think that is directly for purchases but rather statement credit that offsets your purchases total. Even the DJs stuff is not worth it because we can get a gift card for anywhere up to 40% off throughout the year.

        • I got that letter too and I thought the point devaluation wasn't happening until Apr next year? Will check the letter again tonight. In any case, the shop small promo is offering 1000 Points = $9.63 on Amex Explorer.

        • Same value is on my list that it has been since I signed up a few years ago. $7.41 per 1000

  • Showing on my explorer… but meh!

I got it on my explorer card too, convert to 103.84 points for 1 dollar, looks like good value compare to gift card.

I've got the Platinum Edge and my conversion rate is showing as 1000 Points = $9.10 for Shop Small.

    • Same on my Platinum Edge. The way I look at it is this: I can transfer these points to Velocity 1:1 and potentially sell velocity for 1.2 cents each. This offer is 0.91 cents per point but with no risk whereas selling Velocity has some risk, e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/413920

      • But if you shopped at woolies its 3pts per dollar. So it's more than 0.91c :)

    • same here

    • 1000 Points = $9.63
      my essential

  • i assume the qantas amex discovery not apply, as the points go to qantas store for redeem, am i right ?

    • +1

      Correct

  • Everyday Spend 1000 Points = $7.41 on my explorer :(

    • +2

that's the standard rate. If you've shopped at any shop small places, then you can get the extra 30% ie $9.63

    • I'm seeing 1000pts = $7.41 on my Explorer too. I'll try buying something from a shop small location tonight and see if it changes (I'm already enrolled in shop small) and report back.

      • No need to report back it's clearly stated. The offer is valid for points redeemed against shop small purchases, other offers are the rate you stated.

  • hmm not showing up on my essential amex.

anyone see on their essential card?

edit found it. must be on desktop not mobile.
    i got 1000 Points = $9.63

  • Is this gone? Can't see it any more

    • No it’s still there, based on other years it lasts into December for accrual of points to redeem. Only for shop small purchases made in Bovember however.

  • Is it better to use points for this or save points for flight upgrades?

    • Had the same question in my mind too!

I'm guessing it depends on what flight upgrades/redemption you're looking at vs the amount of points you have, and the $ value for each post conversion.

  • Shame, just converted my 14000 points to Velocity (with 15% bonus points), just yesterday.

    • Isn't yours better value? This is less than 1c per point.

  • Just did a whole heap of shop small spends, hope, I can redeem this in time.
