  How does this differ from free tools like GNS3?

    GNS3 is good for routing but not switching, but GNS3 can simulate more devices (vendor-neutral).
    I think VIRL is preferred if you are trying to get a CCIE certificate.
    I would use both in the real world.

      Or just go for eve/unl which runs IOU. You can run it offline and no restrictions on number of nodes
