Sapphire Radeon RX Vega 64 8GB Video Card $612.24 Delivered @ Newegg

70

Seems to be cheapest price on OzBargain historically. I would prefer a Vega 56 deal at <$440 but oh well.

  • Where do these sit compared to Nvidia? Between 1070 and 1080?

    • Between 1070ti and 1080.

    • If AMD finewine is real then it should be comparable to the 1080 now but who knows. I would advise anyone buying this to buy an aftermarket cooler from arctic cooling etc.

  • Similar to a 1080, seems the 1080 slightly outdoes it https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1080-vs-AMD…

Not too keen on the noisy blower cooler.

Wish it was Asus with mumtiple fans…
Anyone using these and advise their performance.

They are slightly behind GTX 1080, you can overclock the memory on it and increase the power limit by 50% and in some situations it'll even creep past 1080 performance but at the expense of a lot of heat and power usage.

I overclocked my HBM memory clocks to 1040mhz from the stock 945mhz while also undervolting the card. This makes the card run more efficiently while keeping the temperatures lower than it's default settings, something you should definitely do if you're buying any Vega card.

Still, it's a hot card and you should expect temps in the high 70's and that's with a twin-fan cooler inside a case that has high airflow (I have 1x120mm exhaust and 2 140mm intakes, mesh style case).

This card only has 1 fan and it's blower style so it will run hotter than a non ref card. I'd expect it to run a few degrees hotter than mine (past 80 degrees).

If you don't have a Freesync monitor and you don't intend to get one, perhaps go for the green team instead so you don't have to worry about thermals.

Thanks Scrimshaw. I am thinking to get a 27" 1440P FreeSync monitor soon.

I hope Ryzen 7 2700x, Vega 64 (still to purchase), 16 GB RAM 3000 Mhz ( you advised to underclock it), some x470 motherboard (Still to purchase) will be enough to pump 1440p monitor with 144 Hz fps for say BF V.

I missed the card you got from SE and still cant find anymore to a similar price.

Confused if I get this one due to heat issues as I am going to tweek vega like you suggested as well.

        • Im no expert, but i think it would be hard to get 144 FPS at 1440p with BFV.

Looking at some benchmarks at 1440P on Ultra, Vega 64 gets 95FPS even with an RTX 2080ti it gets 142FPS. Maybe knocking down the graphics may get you closer

          • @jackwoz: I am fine to out setting on high.
Hope it will be good for another 3 to 4 years.

            • @EnALup: BFV is still pretty new, so may be they will optimise it a bit more in the next few patches as well as the drivers

          • @jackwoz: Maybe if you turn down the graphics settings. What is wrong with aiming at 100Hz instead? The max is 144Hz, but you can lock the output to whatever you want via custom resolutions. Even 80Hz is awesome compared to 60Hz, and the benefits after that lessen.

@Major Mess: Yea, I might try that. Idea is to get Free sync 27" 1440p monitor and can go with 75 Hz or 144 Hz depending on a good deal :)

I can live with 100 Hz FPS coming from 60 Fps 1080p.

              • @EnALup: Depending on game, driver version and Win10 updates, I sometimes have to have the primary monitor I intend to use for the game set to the custom resolution before firing the game up, or it doesn't get picked up as an option. Sometimes you also will need to edit a game config file to expose the frequency. No big hassle and a Google search should sort any issues.

  • Same here OP. bought Asus RX 580 Top edition (best version out there) this black friday but if a Vega 56 comes below $440, I would buy it and then flash the BIOS to Vega 64 (google for more info). Basically, you get very close to Vega 64 at a much lower cost

Still, this is a decent deal

  • I bought the gigabyte version of this card about a year ago.

I'd personally try to avoid the blower cooler by getting another card, the acceptable at stock noise levels make the card thermal throttle, and turning the fan up is incredibly irritating, enough to drown out my phone speakers.

The fact of the matter is if you're not happy with the cooler (which you won't be) then you'll have to spend another $125 getting an aftermarket heatsink with good fans, or $250-500 to get it liquid cooled.

    • Try throttling down the voltage as Scrimshaw advised in post above.

      • Have done, the issue is that the only power states that voltage can be changed is p6 and p7, and because it overheats so much at p5 it can't boost up to the higher states and ends up hanging there, at very inefficient power levels.

This can be easily fixed by increasing the fan RPM from say 2800 to 3500, it's cool enough to be self sustainable at the lower voltages in states p6 and p7, but it's a big increase in the noise level. As to whether that's a big deal is very dependent on personal preference, I can tolerate a fair amount of noise but to the point where I can barely hear my phone speakers at full volume is excessive IMHO.

        • 3500RPM on the reference RX cooler is actual hell. I couldn't even handle 2500 let alone 3500!

I think what people don't understand is that AMD GPUs are great value. Not only is this a CPU but also a great electric heater. Multifunctional!

    • +1

Yea. We hear u. We r getting CPU and GPU along with heater.

  • -2

3 in one haha. These aren't apus, excuse my typo!
