It never ceases to amaze me the amount of things you can buy from Aldi

    • +4

yep, all junk that doesn't really sell elsewhere under the guise of 'low low prices'.

  • how the hell do you ride a unicycle

        very nice!

      • Yup…I'm that guy that need that gold quip explained (I even tried Googling it)…

        Anyone…?

        • You're likely going to fall off, so you need to be ballsy to attempt it.

    • +1

It doesn't take long to be able to go a few tens of metres, maybe an afternoon. It can be good fun and it's actually great exercise for strengthening core muscles and reducing back pain. My back problems almost disappeared when I started riding one <mumble> years ago. I need to start again and get my son out on the Aldi unicycle I bought him last year. It's good quality for the price.

      • If you learnt to ride a unicycle in one afternoon you have some real talent there.
For those interested in this unicycle, plan for atleast an hour a day for a week or so.

        • It was an intense afternoon :) The skill is definitely one that's easier to lose than it is to acquire. Definitely not like riding a bicycle as I struggled to get across the road on one the last time I tried.

      One wheel at a time.

Exactly what i need in life. Struggle to balance on 2 wheels

  • Hi OP or others, I am interested at this Saturday's portable a/c, has anyone bought any portable units from Aldi? I heard they are very noisy… thanks..

    https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/special-buys-sat-1-d…

    • +1

Any portable unit needs both the intake AND the outlet to be piped outside - otherwise they don't actually work.

As per the picture in your link, this unit pumps the heated air outside - which then immediately re-enters the room to replace the volume expelled…

As much as it pumps cold air into the room, it's also drawing an equal amount of hot air in too !

      • I got a mixed feeling for this item, do you think I should buy it?

      • Are you sure about your logic?

There is no difference at all between pumping in outside air and letting outside air seep in through cracks. Unless of course you have a reservoir of cold air outside that you can pump in, but then all you'd need is a fan, not an AC.

The only thing that matters is that the air that gets expelled is significantly hotter than the air that comes in to replace it.

        • "There is no difference at all between pumping in outside air and letting outside air seep in through cracks."
          This is precisely the problem.

Units with two pipes - inlet and outlet - exist https://learn.allergyandair.com/portable-air-single-hose-vs-… and solve the problem. Because they are bringing in air from outside (hose 1) to conduct heat from the unit, and then sending the heated air back outside again (hose 2) they don't remove any air from the room, and hence don't suck hot air into the room through any available cracks…

          • @Nom: Think about it again.

No matter what, outside air comes inside. Whether through hose 1 or through cracks. That outside air will have pretty much the same temperature in either case.

If it's hot outside, hot air comes in through hose 1 or cracks. No difference.

The cooling power is determined only by how much heat the unit can impart on the air that is expelled.

Edit: the only difference I can see would not be connected to heat transfer, but to humidity levels. If the inside level is different (i.e. lower humidity) than outside and you want to preserve that, then a heat exchanger with 2 hoses makes sense.

            • @team teri: "No matter what, outside air comes inside. Whether through hose 1 or through cracks."

The part you're missing is that the single hose units are actively pumping hot air in through the cracks. For every litre of hot air they expel from the room, a litre of hot air from outside must come in to the room to replace it..

The double hose units aren't pumping any air out of the room - they bring in air from outside through the hose and then they send it back outside again though the other hose. No air is removed from the room, and so no outside air is sucked in to replace it.

              • @Nom: Feel free to to the maths on a concrete example. Sure the calculations will be a lot more complicated if you have to consider outside air mixing with inside air, but sometimes it helps to take a step back.

In both scenarios the amount of energy that is transferred from the inside to the outside is determined only by the capacity of the heat pump to extract energy from the room air and impart it onto the hot air it pumps out.

In an energetic sense it really does not matter where the hot air comes from that is expelled, whether it comes from the outside and goes straight back out or whether it comes from the room, is expelled and is replaced by outside air.

                • @team teri: How about noise levels??…

                  • @Yaren24: Noise from the air wooshing in through the cracks in your house? That could be an issue, indeed, thanks for pointing it out.

                • @team teri: I don't need to illustrate anything, this subject has already been covered to death.
                  https://www.yourbestdigs.com/reviews/the-best-portable-air-c… etc. - it's not complicated.

                  • @Nom: They aren't scientists, they didn't do any maths, they compared 2 different systems.

Indeed a valid test would be - as they suggest in some circumstances - to leave the second hose disconnected on the same unit and then compare results. And those are obvious and easy to predict from the physics: as long as humidity levels don't come into play and it's only about pumping heat outside to cool down the house, there will be no difference in average temperatures inside between running the same system in either configuration.

Feel free to believe what you read on the web written by people who didn't bother doing calculations. I won't.

                    • @team teri: Stop arguing it lul, I will grab one this weekend.

                    • @team teri: "and it's only about pumping heat outside to cool down the house"

But it's NOT only about this - that's the whole point.

You've just described the two hose system. It pumps heat outside, to cool down the house.

The single hose system is pumping heat outside, to cool down the house, and also indirectly pumping heat INSIDE, to warm up the house. It's at a disadvantage right from the start.

The single hose system takes air from the room - air that it has already cooled !! - and uses that air to pump heat outside. And that same volume of air - hot, because it's from outside - then has to re-enter the room to keep the air pressure constant. Warm air is now continuously entering the room.

One of the two systems is expelling heat from the room.

The other is expelling heat from the room AND ALSO adding new heat to the room in the new air from outside AND ALSO expelling some of the air it's already cooled from the room. Surely you can see the efficiency loss here ?

                      • @Nom: I will let both of you know how well it works…

                        • @Yaren24: It will be fine :-)

                          • @team teri: No worries man, my room is quite small (3 x 3), so I think that air con should do the job

                            • @Yaren24: Hi guys, I have just bought the ALDI portable A/C unit, it works ok, but the noise level reaches 80db, very very noisy, I had it running for 10 mins, it dropped the temp of my room from 31 to 27.

  • Don't forget to fit the seat on your unicycle before you ride it.

  • If you buy this , and don't work as a circus performer , make sure that you have top medical cover …..as you will probably end up in A & E
