I guess maybe some ppl read mills and boon in the bathtub or something.
It doesn't hurt to be waterproof but i doubt many ppl are upgrading it solely for that feature.

True story, I used to throw my Kindle on top of my laundry when I went to the laundromat. One day I got distracted, threw everything into the machine, started it up, then I saw my Kindle going round and round through the door window. I tried to stop the machine but couldn't do anything. So yeah being waterproof is actually not as silly as it sounds

This may be one 'advantage' for a waterproof Kindle (although it is also detergent proof? and rotation proof? and heat/cold proof?), but I doubt this particular eventuality is one which Amazon specifically considered.
How many such cases of 'throwing the Kindle in with my laundry' do you reckon occur each year? One? Five? 30? 200? And how many would survive, even if they were waterproof?
I suppose a case could also be made for… a bear drooling excessively on my Kindle while I was picnicking…
Or… my indoor aquarium spontaneously cracked, and the contents flowed across my coffee table (where my Kindle was resting).
I'm guessing it is most likely the intended waterproofing is for things like occasional rain/dishes splashing/spilled drinks.
It's just a bonus that your future laundry or bear mishaps may also result in protection.

I was given the old version too. The person insisted that was the white one I ordered. Had to explain that paperwhite is the name, not color.
