Why are phones so expensive nowadays… $1000+ for a phone seems crazy…

    • -1

How much is not crazy? I mean phones have always been expensive. I bought my first smartphone in 2007 for $1200. It did way less than this can do, was much thicker, much smaller screen, battery lasted an hour, was resistive touch screen etc. You know you can buy cheap phones right? You don't have to buy the most expensive ones.

      • What phone was $1200 in 2007?
The iPhone 3G 16GB was released in mid 2008, and included 24 months of Telstra service for under $1200

        See https://www.apple.com/au/newsroom/2008/06/30Telstra-and-Appl…

          Pre iPhone mate!

HTC Touch HD. Many phones broke the $1200 barrier. It's the same with any tech, screens and technolgoy get far better, they are more expensive to produce. The screens in current gen iPhones and Samsungs cost more than nearly an entire phone of 10 years ago.

        • I remember my first digital mobile phone (a Motorola International 7200) purchased back in 1994 cost approximately $1000…then a couple of years
later I "upgraded / downsized" it to an Ericsson GH337 which sold for (once again) around $1000 before trade-in.

If you take into consideration the time-value of money, a phone currently sold for $1000 isn't really that "expensive" comparatively (and don't forget that mobile phones 20-odd years ago are pretty basic (calls and SMS only) without all the "smartphone" features).

Sorry to say you overpaid… I purchased the O2 XDA ii for around $800, sure it was not as good as todays phones but the volume of those expensive phones back then was very low so production costs would have been significantly higher… today with the volume and much cheaper components available phones should have come down in price like PC's/notebooks..etc.. have… I think the issue is each year they try to push the price up a little extra to see what people are willing to pay and how much more proffit they can make..

It's been reported that with say the iPhone 8Plus there is at least 180% margin from manufacture costs to sale price that's a HUGE margin on what is nowadays a significantly higher volume product with the lower cost of manufacturing compared to say an XDA phone which also had higher software licensing costs (Windows Mobile..etc)…

All I'm saying is it feels like costs are being 'pushed' higher by these companies to see how much people are willing to pay (I also believe they have found the roof going on the recent sales figures many seem to agree it's simply too much to pay for a phone… (you can buy a full blown PC/notebook at these crazy prices!)

Just my 2 cents worth.. let's wait and see what they do next year, I believe prices will come down or we will see a large shift towards 'lower end' phones that cost less but have most of what the top end phones already have…

        • I overpaid? I paid less than retail! …. HTC Touch HD. Much better than the O2 XDA.

The screens were dirt cheap back then though. It's one of the costliest parts of phones these days.

The roof that you speak of isn't what you think it is, there have been many talking about this roof, it's not price, its technology. There isn't enough reason to upgrade anymore, so people aren't. Their phones do nearly everything that other phones do. Like an IP6S does 95% of what a modern iPhone or Android can do, so why upgrade? The leaps and bounds before that were much bigger.

I know it doesn't justify the cost, but for apple you have to keep in mind they support their device unlike any other company, 5 years of OS updates and local stores. You get what you pay for frankly. And it's part of the reason so many people aren't buying new phones, because the old ones are supported so well. Meanwhile barely any androids are up to date with security or OS.

          • @onlinepred: Gotchu the HTC Touch HD was a better phone, agree, I had one very briefly (borrowed) but much, later on, I think it was even after my XDA Flame as the HTC Touch HD came out a few years after even that phone. From memory, the XDA and XDAII I had was from around 2002/2003 where as the HTC touch was more 2008/2009/2010 time I think. (thinking back I might still have my old XDA Flame in my draw at work still, I should dig it out!)

I also agree with you in that modern phones are becoming less and less required as the older versions can do 95% of what the new ones can and there is no use upgrading much really… I'm still using my old Galaxy Note 4 now and it's fine although starting to get a little slow at times but definitely not worth 3-4x the price of the newer models I don't think for my usage..

I just feel technology generally gets cheaper and more accessible with time but with phones, it seems the other way round for some reason I don't quite understand I mean even some of the cheaper $300-400 mobile phones now days have fantastic features and cover 95% of what people need (NFC, SD Card, Dual Sims, 32/64GB Ram 4GB RAM, 2.4/5G wifi, dual rear cameras..etc.)

Anyway, let's see what next year brings I just feel personally that more people are going to be opting for the cheaper phones now as these high-end phones as you said might offer 5-10% more but it's not worth over 150% more in price for the majority I don't think…

            All the best!

  • Hopefully there is a deal with the Aus 128Gb model near 1k soon. Has anyone had experience getting the phone repaired/refunded under warranty for any of the EBay shops?

Every smart phone I have owned has had issues near the end of its warranty and I know how hard the brick and mortar stores can be getting it honoured I'd hate to have that issue with an online store.

  • I thought all Note 9 phones are dual SIM apart from those sold by the telcos, I'm getting confused now…

    • VF

      Vodafone branded, hence single SIM.

      • Thanks. I missed that.
