Warranty Usually Starts on Purchase Date, What if It's Delivered Late?

Just today I suddenly thought about this as I bought a camera from Videopro (eBay) and it's been 3 weeks since I ordered and it's still not shipped. (No info about delays on listing whatsoever)

Usually warranty starts from the transaction date, but in situations like this (especially now that online shopping is big) are there laws in place that specify the start of warranty can be the delivery date? Or am I just talking nonsense here?

  • For an expensive purchase such as an appliance, tools, or electronics / cameras there is usually a manufacturer's option to register the warranty directly with them. If you do this, you should be able to communicate the date you actually received the goods and the warranty starts then.
    I had a similar experience with my recent house renovation - i purchased a bunch of stuff and had the appliances delivered to my cabinet maker (just so they could measure them for a nice fit) like 3 months earlier than they went into my house. so the purchase AND delivery dates were really early compared to when i actually starting using them.
    When i registered the warranties online i just put the date when i actually installed them. I Had a recent warranty claim on my oven and that was no bother - i just told the lady on the phone and she was more than happy with the warranty starting 3 months after the invoice date (from the date i registered).

    I am sure you can do something similar with your camera.

    Shouldn't matter anyways. 1 month out of warranty and they'll still help

    I'd be more concerned about a 3 week wait than the warranty implications! 😂

    • I think the reason I'm not worried is that the purchase would be backed by ebay + PayPal + credit card. When it's out of warranty…no one is there to help.

      • I hope you get your camera. I waited a couple of weeks before messaging them for an update, saying I was happy to wait since it was a great deal. A few minutes later I got an automated eBay email saying Videopro had cancelled the order. The refund took a week. Zero contact from Videopro.

    I would suggest that legally any warranty would commence from the sale date, this being the date of the contract. Extension to shipping date would be at the goodwill of the manufacturer.

    That aside, I just checked the eBay feedback for VideoPro and it is abysmal. All of the negative feedback is about the same thing - late shipment. Maybe time to lodge a claim though eBay for a refund.
