  • bah - read this as Qantas!

Qatar would be better than Qantas if it weren't for the Doha airport

      • What's so bad about the Doha airport?

        • +5

For a lone passenger who had to wait 8.5 hours…1 milk-bar, 1 duty-free and 2 food courts with everything priced at double to triple Australian retail all enclosed in a small space was very fun!

        • A lone passenger at any airport for 8.5 hours would suck though. I like Doha, nice place. Free wifi too, great for a nerd like me.

I couldn't say enough good things about Qatar airways, definitely an excellent deal. Spewing I'll still be at Uni between now and June 10. :(

This is an incredible offer, it is well known that Qatar have one of the finest economy cabins in the world and for those that have actually traveled to Europe (not London!) flying via Doha is a huge advantage. For example, Qatar is the only airline to fly one-stop to Barcelona, a favourite destination of many. Let's face it, Heathrow is a nightmare even if you're going to London. +1 from me, a great offer. Thanks!

    • +3

Singapore Airlines also flies 1 stop to Barcelona via Singapore, and they serve more Australian cities than Qatar Airways. But yes it is still a good offer.

      • Yeah, and you get better departure and connection times too.

      • Singapore are a sensational airline (favourite by a long way), but I must correct you - They stop in Milan (MXP) on the Singapore (SIN) connection to Barcelona (BCN) and that adds at least 1.5-2hrs to the trip. 3-4 hours I would rather spend elsewhere. Cheers

  • I'd recommend Qatar Airways.
They're flights from Oz to Brussels have the shortest layover I've ever had flying to Europe.
So even if there's nothing in Doha Airport, it's not like you have to be there for very long (to Brussels, anyway).

As far as I can see, they fly only from Melbourne :(
It's not fair… Melbourne already has significantly cheaper flights to Europe with Etihad, Emirates and Qatar.
Who will take care of Sydney?

    • +1

Macquarie Airports Ltd need to take care of Sydney and lower the cost of flying there.

I'm amazed you got Tiger going there.

      • +1

Macquarie Airports? Lower the cost of flying? I almost dropped my coffee cup when I read that :-)

  • the site is very slow for me

  • so what price are people getting ?

    • +1

The sale isn't on yet. It starts on 6 April.
I just checked their normal price from MEL to Madrid and to Barcelona. It's approx. $2180 p/p. Should we expect it to be $1090 p/p when on sale? We'll see.
EDIT: condition: Offer applicable to fare only. Taxes & fees must be paid
It means that it's going to be much more than $1090… probably around $1400-1500 mark. Which means that it won't be a real bargain than.

      • Taxes that are quoted for a return flight from Europe are only $100. That means your fair should be less than $1200.

        • It didn't show taxes when I tried.
The time for the sale has come. But their web-site doesn't work. Only loads main pages but doesn't do flight search and booking. The page "We are processing your request, please wait…" stays forever.

      • Web site did work for me but the final price did not reflect the 2 for 1.
Unless the sale starts midnight in Qatar time.

        • Purchase dates: 6th and 7th April 2011, according to the local time of your departure city. Web-site states that the sale is on.

        • It didn't work for me either. I think it means 6th and 7th Qatar time, which may not actually be the 6th and 7th for everyone, they just worded it poorly

  • On my computer it showed "Offer can be booked in 00 hours 00 minutes and 00 sec".
I clicked on Booking tab, then - on the picture with the Deal Ad and it showed booking engine where I entered the cities and dates. After that clicked Search. It went to: "We are processing your request, please wait…". But nothing changed after that.

  • Wonder if the site is overloaded :/

    • It worked poorly even before sale and now it stopped working.

  • +2

Getting past the "We are processing you request…" bit here, but still a no go: "Unfortunately our systems are not responding and we are unable to process your booking at the moment. We regret the inconvenience. Please try again later."

    • +3

Should be back to normal in 48 hours!

      • That's what I think too :)

  • +5

    I get:
"Booking Engine service is temporarily unavailable due to scheduled maintenance"

A faulty engine is not something you want to associate with an airlines :P

  • yeah not working. error messages galore!

  • Flew Qatar to Brussels just recently and they were AMAZING via their $786 package and they are by far the best Airline I have travelled with (and I have travelled alot). Great Deal!

  • Ahh got excited then realised it's only between May and June. I'm planning a trip to South America departing mid June :(

For the naysayers, here you go:

Qatar's one of only 7 airlines worldwide, including CX and SQ, that have a 5-star rating. http://www.airlinequality.com/StarRanking/5star.htm

They came 2nd in the Best Economy Class Award (with MH coming 1st)
    http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards-2010/yclass.htm

And they won all the following awards, too, most notably Best Business Class and Best Airline Middle East
    http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards-2010/jclass.htm
    http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards-2010/jcatering.htm
    http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards-2010/mideast.htm
    http://www.worldairlineawards.com/Awards-2010/svcexcmideast.…

    • And it's one of only few airlines whose internet booking engine doesn't work properly. Makes you think how the rest of their computer equipment works…

      • Then go fly Qantas and hope their flight computers don't stop half way between continents… When you have good deals any website is bound to be hammered with online traffic. Try westpac banking during lunch hour.

        • Other Ozbargainers and I tried Qatar website before the sale and it struggled to work even then. So it has nothing to do with the site overload.
In any case how can you vote positive for a deal which no one can get?
"Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request."
          No sale - No deal!

      • by 'rest of their computer equpiment', do you mean the computers on their aircraft? i'm pretty sure the website IT team don't maintain the onboard flight management systems.

        then again, i'm no expert..

        • If they can't maintain their booking engine properly, would you trust the rest of their service?
Of course, it's the matter of personal choice.

  • anyone can recommend a deal for airfares but departing melbourne after 20th of june?

return date unknown as yet, but around 5 months later

  • Hope they have flight to Cebu
    need some R&R there

  • +1

Epic fail, hopefully their booking company does not design avionics equipment.

  • Just an FYI, this deal very popular atm on bargain sites around the world (Slickdeals, hotukdeals, etc) as well being mentioned by top travel blogs (Gadling). It's one thing to be competing against Australia (aka Jetstar deals) but it's another to be competing with the entire world ;).

  • Qatar Airways update:
"Due to technical problems with our booking system, customers may have experienced difficulties booking the 2-for-1 offer.
For this reason, Qatar Airways is postponing the special promotion to start on 13 April (00:01hrs) until 14 April (23:59hrs)."

So it's the second time they postpone it. Probably will be the same story again on 13 April.

  • Do we know if the 00:01hrs is EST (GMT+10) or UAE time(GMT+4)?

  • It is on right now … !!! Just booked a flight to Europe for $1350 (incl. everything). So a ok deal … a normal deal is around 2000 at the moment.
Looks like there is still heaps of availability (It is local time by the way) … the booking was nice and easy … I could even compare some different prices for different dates and locations before deciding.

  • $1827 from Melbourne to Brazil. Wow, that is good. It's a shame I can't flight in that five week gap.
