Wanting to Upgrade Power Supply for under $100

Hi guys good morning.

I would like to upgrade my power supply in my computer since it is quite old and expending a lot OT money in energy bill. I would like something between 550w to 750w max at leat bronze under 100 bucks. Thx in advanced.

Edit:

Found 2 options so far but unsure what's worth more.

Cooler Master

Thermaltake

So many options on Ebay. For -$100 you can get a decent 80+ Gold PSU within your desired 550-750 watt range.

    • I was looking at ebay I couldn't find with a gold I found just a cooler master semi modular with bronze for 80 bucks. Would mind send a link with the gold ones? Cheers

Uhh, how would replacing a PSU for your computer lower your energy bill? Its the actual computer components that draw power.
EDIT: Do you know the efficiency rating of your current PSU?

    • Since my psu is very old doesn't manage well the energy so it draws more power then necessary also the efficiency is very low since it is not even 80 plus. (I am talking about a 10 years old psu with 900w.

      • Ah, I see. Have you tried umart?
Plenty of Bronze under $100. $105 for cheapest Gold.

        • Nope I will. I was chasing something at ebay since they have got free delivery. And I am in Perth. But I will have a look.

      • Around the 10 year mark is when the capacitors start blowing too.

        • Yeah I can imagine I cleaned up and I'm making sure is not too hot. I don't do gaming so is more for Revit and CAD.

There may only be a few percentage points difference between efficiencies, but over time it can mount up. Same as a fridge, the efficiency can make a big difference to the total cost over the years. It can pay for itself, even with a higher starting price.

    • He has a computer from 1952 that uses transformers and tubes

    • May be wrong, but I believe lower efficiency/worse PSUs draw more power for a lower output, where the higher PSUs draw a closer amount to what is actually needed.

Over time I'd imagine that would add up.

  • Thx guys just bought from ebay a bronze semi modular from cooler marlster. Cheers

Fair enough if you want to upgrade your PSU, but I don't think the efficiency gain will be anywhere near as much as you think it is. I doubt you would even notice it on your electricity bill at all.

I find the likes of PCCG, Scorptec, MSY very useful to find a range of parts and the 'standard' pricing for those parts.
If I was in your shoes, I'd select 3 or so PSU's from these websites, check-out google reviews to weed out any under-performers, then find the best price for the remaining PSU's via Ebay, Amazon, these sites direct (be sure to check shipping) and even make a trip to your local PC store and show them the prices and see what they can do for you.
With PSU's, I'd definitely recommend going a gold rating and modular with sleeved cables as well - plenty of ~500w options there around the $100 mark.

I do this for any/all PC parts, although time-consuming its the best way to get bang for your buck.

  • Like FireRunner, i'm not certain than you'd make your money back in power savings by buying a new PSU. Are you certain your current one is inefficient? I recommend buying an electicity meter plug that will measure the draw of your PSU to confirm, they're under $20 on ebay.
If you do end up buying a new PSU, make sure it comes with the connectors you need. Your older PC probably used some molex connectors, and not all new PSUs come with those.
p.s. replacing a PSU, even with a fully modular one is a royal pain, i did this a few weeks ago.

  • If you want to save energy bills, you should be targeting titanium or platinum grade PSUs…..preferably titanium since that's the top of efficiency….
