Apple TV 4th Gen 32GB $188, 4K 32GB $224, 4K 64GB $251 Delivered @ Officeworks

520

Been looking for an Apple TV deal for a few weeks as I missed out on the October deals. Not the cheapest it's ever been but these don't go on sale very often so I bought one for the spare room tv. I've been using these with Kayo Sports the last few weeks and it's working very well.

I highly recommend Apple TV's to anyone with a TV where the smart features don't work well and anyone that is in the Apple ecosystem already.

Apple TV 4K 32GB $224 Normally $249

Only addition from the 4th gen is 4K playback from what I can work out. Both work extremely well and won't be superceded anytime soon.

Apple TV 4 32GB (Not 4K) $188 Normally $209

As above but without 4K.

  • GREAT price. Cheaper than the new stock on eBay.

  • -1

No difference to standard 10% off deals on eBay.

  • Why Apple TV over Chromecast??

    • +9

      Because of iOS.

    • +8

Chromecast you have to stream from a device.. much better experience having a device.. Apple TV 4 is the best media streaming device out there.

      • +3

Chromecast has it's place with Android users. But Apple TV links into your existing apple music and any movies/tv shows you have purchased. And as far as I know all streaming apps are available and work smoothly.
Some people may differ but I hate airplaying/chromecasting. Just another variable where things can go wrong.

      • +13

You mean NVIDIA shield is the best media streaming device. Not sure why you would spend more for this.

        • If you are on the iOS ecosystem than could not think of anything worse than the shield.

          • +3

@wakeboardandy: Fair call to say it's the best media streaming device for the iOS ecosystem, but isn't it also the only media streaming device for the iOS ecosystem?…

I'm not iOS but I assume this is your only option.

I'm Android and love my Shield Tv's.

      • Deluded.

      • +2

        "Best media streaming device"
Only if you value iTunes and iOS.

Shield runs rings around it hardware-wise.

        • +2

          hardware-wise.

LOL. The A10X Fusion in the ATV4K smashes the Tegra X1. The AT4K is basically a iPad Pro without the screen. It smokes everything.

Only if you value iTunes and iOS.

It has by far the most support for apps. Android TV app support is pathetic. Plus the ATV4K has MrMC (Kodi fork) and Infuse.

The Shield is the best Android TV by far, but it’s not anywhere near the same ball park as the ATV4K. Unless you need the openness of Android, then it’s your best option.

          • @PainToad: Love the vote down with zero justification. Cry babies.

    • Because Google collects every single piece of data it can about you and then makes most of it's money loading harmful content known as advertising that loses you money.

      • +2

Pretty sure all this ozbargain advertising is losing me money :P

Appears to be a price match to Harvey Norman who have 10% off Apple TVs and remotes.

    • But wouldn't you rather save 10c by going to Officeworks ;)

Domayne is the same for anyone interested.

      • Yes and you wouldn’t be paying Gerry Harvey any money. I would choose Officeworks over HN and his GST loving ways just because of that.

  • Only addition from the 4th gen is 4K playback

Lol. Well that and the 4K is MUCH more powerful. I’ve read people on many forums say the the difference is night and day.

I’d also only go for the 64Gb. It’s one of the few Apple products where the extra storage is cheap.

    • I honestly don’t notice any difference in performance (I’ve owned both), but all I do is use numerous streaming apps.

      • MrMC or Infuse? That’s where I’ve seen people (even a dev from memory) say the 4 is on it’s last legs.

      • I definitely notice the difference for my Plex server. Parents apple tv(non 4k) is noticeably slower for loading/converting videos compared to mine(4K).

    • I'm the same, the only difference I've ever noticed is that streaming through kodi is much better on the 4k. We still use the older one in the bedroom and it hasn't missed a beat.

From what I've read there is little use in the extra storage unless you are going to game on it. I've got every mainstream streaming app, a lot of sports apps and a few random games and haven't come close to filling it yet.

      • -1

You seem confused about how it manages storage.

When it’s starts to run out of space, it automatically deletes apps (or parts of apps) but still shows them as being installed. Then when you use an app that you don’t often use, it automatically re-downloads it without you noticing.

So, no you won’t come close to filling it. But it will be downloading shit over and over again.

        • I don't believe so, Just checked my storage and my biggest app was Mr Crab 2 that was 160 mb. Nearly all the streaming apps were <50mb. That would be a LOT of small apps to completely fill the device.

And even if I am wrong, every app opens instantly so i'm not bothered what it does. The important thing is it just works.

edit. I'm wrong, but the fact I hadn't noticed shows how good it is.

"New technology found within Apple’s television operating system will automatically pick certain apps apart, downloading only the parts of an app a user needs most at any given time and keeping other parts of the app in the cloud."

        • if this is happening for anyone they should consider iCloud caching on a Mac on the same network, it will keep a copy of those apps on the local network

ofc this is only really applicable if you have a Mac around

  • The 4K also has a much faster processor in it than the previous version, but most people won’t realistically notice much difference (I haven’t) unless they’re playing games.

  • Was interested until I saw $25 delivery. Harvey Norman are price matching this but don't have afterpay. Hmmmmmm

    • Afterpay, for buying stuff you can't afford?

  • I have a MiBox3 that I got for $65. How is this any better?

    • +4

      Kia vs Porsche.

Both do the same basic thing. One does it nicer. Does the extra cost justify the expense, that’s a personal opinion. Personally I got sick of Android TV being a POS.

      • Yeah I would agree that most of the time an Apple TV "just works" however I have found I always end up just using my home theatre PC for everything. Way more flexible.

        • +1

To the most part it just works. I picked up the 4k Apple TV and everytime it goes to sleep I have to fully reset it by unplugging it and plugging it back in. Found out that the issue is common and has been around since 4k Apple TV was released but no patch in sight.

    • +1

It's a lot better for ME because it syncs with all of my familys itunes media on an OS that is constantly updated and works seamlessly with the 3 other phones in the house. Probably not much good for others that use android or have a good TV with apps that haven't broken yet.

Can't speak for that exact box but I've tried android TV on a lower end device in the past and wasn't impressed at all.

  • I guess I should go with the 4K version if Im looking at buying a 4K TV in the next year?

    • Well, that makes it an way decision. Yes!

    • +2

Definitely. But the new 4k TV would have it's own apps I presume. (probably shouldn't argue against my own post!)

  • Worth jailbreaking?

    • You can sideload stuff with a Signing service or dev account. Not sure about complete jailbreak.

  • can't even do pgs subtitles LOL

    • -1

Can't even capitalise or use full stops LOL.

      • Genius!

  • I bought one of these from officeworks about 3 weeks ago, is this not just the normal price for these at Officeworks?

  • Good price. We use the Apple TV 4 to watch netflix daily. Works really well. The netflix app on our sony smart tv is buggy to say the least.

    • I just got an Apple TV 4 as a gift and wish I had bought one sooner!

I 'made do' with the built in apps on my Samsung TV as it worked well enough, but it was never seamless. The Netflix app would often freeze half way when loading a show e.g. the progress indicator would just stop at 28% loading and hang, the Ten Play app audio and video goes out of sync each time the show returns from a commercial and not to mention the limited selection of apps.

So far I have yet to encounter any of these issue with the ATV.

The Apple TV app is also good - I like being able to browse the content and then it just launches the respective app.

Only thing is I wish it had Safari.

  • Apart from iTunes movies, does Apple TV offer anything else over an Xbox One S?

    • +1

Smaller power draw and nicer interface (including physical), but if you’re happy with One S I wouldn’t rush out. Personally, I feel like using a console is overkill for streaming.

    • I don't own Apple TV, but own an Xbox One X, but I'm assuming AppleTV will also have Google Play Movies, Google Music and Apple Music which are missing in Xbox One. You can get away with Google Play Movies by using YoutTube app though.

  • I sort of want an Apple TV but I'm not seeing the compelling reason other than 4k streaming, in which case I would opt for the Chromecast Ultra for 1/4 of the price.

  • @Hughesyboy how do you use it for Kayo?

    • +1

Kayo App… works well. From what I’ve read over on whirlpool it’s the best device for it so far

    • +2

      Install the Kayo app.

      • +1

Ugh I'm stupid, sorry. Now realise I was not in the correct account. I can find it now.

  • Dam, two weeks later and I can’t find any retailer willing to match this recent price. Will just play the waiting game for the next deal.
Just curious of anyone’s experience running a media app like MrMc on the ATV 4K ? I’d prefer Kodi but I can’t be bothered going through the frequent signing of the app and reinstalling it, not sure if there’s a permanent way to load it on the 4K model.
