Looks Like TPG Has Gone and Blocked a Shite Load of Sites

Just recently realised that TPG has blocked a sh*t load of sites deemed to infringe copyrights.

e.g Subtitle page, check this: http://www.yifysubtitles.com/subtitles/johnny-english-englis…

Simple site to download bloody subtitles is now deemed copyright, what's going on?

Looks like VPN prices are gonna jump soon, get it folks

Illegal distro of movies, and music has been happening since Napster days in 2001.i dont see village cinemas, or Disney broke. In fact, we're seeing actors/actresses demand in excess of $15mil per movie.
So why implement this law 20 years later in the hope it will remediate?

    • +5

And before that it was VHS tapes
And before that it was recordable audio tapes they tried to ban

The first part of your comment is terrible logic.

No it's not. He's pointing out something that's been happening for almost 20 years, and yet the corporations and people that claim they are losing money are making more money than ever.

These corporations pretend that each pirated copy of their media is equal to a loss in sale, without any evidence to substantiate that claim - and if anything it's quite the contrary. Most people pirate things because it's too inaccessible (pricing or otherwise), which means they wouldn't have been getting the sale anyway.

Look at Game of Thrones for example. Most people I know have watched it, not a single one has watched it through legitimate sources. But then look at how completely inaccessible the show is in Australia - they chose to sell out and give exclusivity to Rupert Murdoch, and as far as I'm aware, up until a few seasons ago, it would air delayed in Australia too (ie after the US).

Look at BluRay prices - $40-50 for a new release UHD Bluray. $30 for a decade old re-release.

Then look at how many people now happily pay for streaming services like Netflix. I don't know a single person who still pirates music. They're all on Spotify. It's convenient, affordable and accessible.

        • Game of Thrones is available as part of Foxtel Now for $15 per month with no lock in contract. How is that inaccessible compared to the cost of Netflix or Spotify?

          • +5

@kiribatian: $15 per month for 1 TV show?

            • @bmerigan: Similar to Netflix, you also get access to other shows with Foxtel Now and not just Game of Thrones. Obviously your decision if you watch them or not. Paying <$5 an episode for a show such as Game of Thrones is worth it and definitely not 'inaccessible'.

            • @bmerigan: You can watch the show in a month. So only $15 for the show. Plus I’m sure it has more than one show, what you choose to watch from Foxtel now is up to you.

          • +1

@kiribatian: Looking at Foxtel Now and it is $25 per month minimum price? They have combined Pop and Lifestyle as an entry pack.

On 1 October 2018, we updated our pricing and packaging to only having one entry pack starting from $25/month.
Foxtel Now features three different channel pack tiers to match viewers' interests, including our Entry pack (Pop and Lifestyle). Add a Premium pack (Drama, Sport and Movies), or choose All Packs which includes Kids and Docos.

Making more money than ever doesn’t mean they are not losing out on sales. Inflation tends to ensure we are all making more than ever in general. Wages for instance hardly go down, and usually go up, but we all know a 1% pay rise doesn’t cover inflation.

I agree may corporate that claims a pirate is a loss of sale is wrong, some are from people who can’t afford or can’t access it. But it’s wrong to claim the opposite side of the spectrum to say there are no loss of sales. The truth lies somewhere in between.

So is it wrong, for them to try to save some sales? Not up to me make such a judgement, it’s the courts. If we enjoy the freedoms of democracy we should probably respect the crap that sometimes it throws up.

Sometimes you gotta take the good with the bad

    • Because they always want MORE!

Theft in physical stores have been occurring since the dawn of time, physical stores still exist.
In fact some do very well.
So why do we still try to apprehend people that steal in 2018.

      Just saying…

    • It was happening before then.
Ever since the creation of the internet. I remember jumping online in 1996 and finding places.

Before that was vhs. Before that beta. Before that c64. All the while pc as well.
Even before the internet people gathered together and had evenings copying discs between friends.

      Was around well before napster.

Good old bypasser site. Just copy link Yify/Opensubtitle link & voila! Screw censorship!

    http://anonymouse.org/anonwww.html

Edit: oh wait what? They also blocked my fav anime stream sites? what an @ssh0les!

  • Works for me, but I also default to using Google DNS.

    • My ISP is Belong but I use Google DNS. I have no restrictions that I have noticed.

  • Can anyone screen cap what it looks like when it's been blocked?

      Access to Website Disabled

You have attempted to obtain access to a particular website. This page notifies you that access to that website has been disabled because the Federal Court of Australia has determined that the website infringes, or facilitates the infringement of, copyright.

      TPG logo on bottom right.

      • +1

He said screen cap, not type it out….plus none of the text is bolded…..the heading is in a purplish colour and size 14 or 16, and text is probably Arial font and size 12 ….here's what it looks like on my end for those wondering what it looks like as it is.

        • +1

          Was busy playing my PS4…

Edit: and thx mate for your hard work. :p

          • -1

@Yummy: Typing it out would have been more effort needed though…unless you copy pasted and then bolded it…….or and an extremely fast typer that typing that one paragraph or two is like nothing…..

            • @Zachary: How long it takes to:

              1. Open app, screencap (or Printscreen, open MS paint), paste.
              2. Named the file (optional), look for directory, save.
              3. Open browser (if not open yet), look for IMGUR or use OzB to upload.
              4. Look for the directory/file. Click upload.
              5. Na na na na na la la la la la (elevator music is playing). DING! Url is created.
              6. Copy paste url, post it on OzB.
              7. Waiting anxiously for any reply.

              Or you just:

              1. Copy paste, put 2 asterixes on either end of paragraphs.
              2. Additional 10 words or more (optional).
              3. Click Post Comment button.
              4. Waiting anxiously for any reply.

Aaaand I'm just type em with my 11 fingers. :)

              • @Yummy: Snag.gy let's you paste from your clipboard directly and immediately gives you the url while uploading.

You can also get better screenshot software which lets you drag a box over the screen and immediately have the content on the clipboard.

So with a keyboard shortcut overwrites, it's:

                • keyboard shortcut
                • drag over page
                • open snag.gy
                • ctrl v
                • copy url here.

This way you avoid the elevator music lol

              • @Yummy: Congratulations, you've now put in more effort to typing than I have screenshotting one picture….

        • +1

You have a double thickness task bar. What a criminal.

You probably have a shit ton of apps open at a time and you don't group them.

          • @lostn: Double thickness taskbar because it shows date + time + day which is a nice convenience for me…..if I were to want to know either of the three without taking extra steps to google it…..and just glance at the bottom right for that info….plus the extra space there helps if you…

have a shit ton of apps open at a time and you don't group them

I think I find having multiple tabs open on the taskbar easier to manage than it being grouped together under one umbrella tab….bu that could just be me….

            • +1

              @Zachary: Single bar. Too easy.

              • @Yummy: …oh well…I still prefer the format out in open display rather than me having to hove my cursor over it to get it…..

            • @Zachary: Hover over the date/time and you get the day. No need to google.

I think I find having multiple tabs open on the taskbar easier to manage than it being grouped together under one umbrella tab….bu that could just be me….

I used to do that too, but then it became unmanageable.

              • @lostn: …I guess if the tabs are like 10 pixels wide and you can't read their individual window titles to see what they are without hovering your cursor over them….

  • Do we have a list?
    buy VPN it that easy.

    • +3

Opera browser has a VPN built in.

    • +1

They're soon going to ban VPNs for facilitating sites that facilitate infringement of copyright..

      • +1

        Good luck implementing that

        • If their implementation is to go after the customers, it won't work.

What they can do is go after the suppliers (i.e. the VPN).

          • @lostn: How do they go after VPNs which are based overseas and out of jurisdiction?

            • @buckster: The same way they go after overseas sites that don't collect GST for them.

If you do business in Australia, you are subject to Australia's laws. So itunes, Steam, google play, all based in America but still have to play ball.

Steam has been fined for not allowing refunds and other things.

Just because you're based overseas doesn't mean you can do what you want and not get fined or banned from trading.

              • @lostn: But overseas VPNs don't do business in Australia which is the whole point.

Just like Gearbest not paying any GST well duh they don't really care what the Australian government does they have no power over them. An overseas VPN host will also give the finger to the Australian government.

  • Its working fine with me, I'm with Optus. Perhaps the OP should use VPN?

  • This one works so far:

    http://easysubtitles.com

  • +6

Why is OP trying to download subtitles for "JOHNNY ENGLISH" in the first place lol

    • Haha, this is the real question!

    • +1

Maybe trying to understand the plot lol

  • exetel has not yet blocked, its not like these do anything, if you're torrenting you should have a vpn anyway

  • works for me but im with tpg!??

  • Using TPG (brisbane) with Google DNS and I couldn’t access piratebay anymore tonight (22/12). I was able to download movie yesterday (21/12) afternoon though. I used VPN and voila access granted.

    • is ur dns config on your Computer LAN or the Router?

im using the OpenDNS servers and still blocked

      https://imgur.com/bGoMWfm

      • Can you go to ipleak.net and post a screenshot of your test results?

      • On my PC, not router. Maybe that’s why it didn’t work? I tried both google and open DNS.

  • I'm using PIA, with TPG and still blocked.

I thought going into VPN mode avoids this???

Edit: Looks like I just had to refresh the page when connected to VPN instead. Nice.

    • Yes, if still having issues Flush Your DNS cache, then clean your Browser's Cache (eg using CCleaner).

  • I'm on TPG and not using VPN and the link in OPs post works for me.
edit: I have Google DNS set in my router (the NBN one provided by TPG)

  • With TPG and no VPN and link works fine.

All the sites that used to be banned work fine now too, this is without using any DNS either.

The upside of more pirating sites getting shut down is that Hollywood makes very, very, few movies worth even the effort to illegally download these days.

    • +3

Great point. Hollywoods method of combating piracy is to make endless amounts of predictable, rubbish superhero movies! It's working surprisingly well from what I see!

      • +4

And making sure they feature at least one Chinese actor or one scene filmed in China.

      • Love it or hate it, they're doing great at the box office.

  • +3

For those of you struggling with dns changes, or if our shitty country gets a little more sophisticated than prohibitive dns level blocking, you can download a browser called opera, a turn on the free, built-in vpn feature when you want to access subtitles etc. This is also good to avoid your hornpub habits from being stored on leaky databases around the world to comply with metadata retention laws.

    https://www.opera.com/

When using this free vpn, Google searches are sometimes blocked by captcha codes. If; like me you have trouble identifying store fronts and buses, use this distributed Google proxy instead:

    https://searx.me

Idonotknowwhy does not condone privacy, but none of my business what you use these anti-censorship measures for.

    • If; like me you have trouble identifying store fronts and buses

It's not you that's having trouble identifying them, it's Captcha itself which doesn't understand what is and isn't a street sign.

  • Works for me I'm on tpg.. Nsw

  • -1

    DNS blocking is so lame!

    • +2

The implementation is lame. But the intent to oppress the population is sinister.

  • Recent followup to the 2015 legislation that doesn't seem to have received much attention. Appears to further strengthen the hand of copyright holders.

    https://hallandwilcox.com.au/copyright-law-update-proposed-a…

There was some concern at the time the 2015 laws were introduced that VPN services could be blocked, and I assume that remains a risk today, perhaps increased by the recent changes. On the face of it, it seems copyright holders could be helped by the new "primary effect" test if they were to go after VPN services - at the time the 2015 laws were introduced, the "primary purpose" test was cited by the government as a safeguard that would protect VPNs. Need an expert to weigh in but as there hasn't been that much coverage of the changes, there aren't the usual voices being asked by the media for their opinions.

  • Works for me, tpg here.

    • +1

      do you have specific DNS?

      • Cloudflare the fastest public DNS

        • so what does it mean to use cloudfare vs TPG?
          will my internet be slower?
will all traffic be logged with cloudfare?

How will cloudfare benefit from the millions of users using their DNS for free?

          • @frostman: All I know is that your internet will be faster. My knowledge about this stuff is very limited sorry. Must have VPN if you don't want you to be logged.

  • +10

I dont know why everyone is just saying "no big deal" just use a different dns server.
That may work for the first year or so, but then they say, people are getting around our block, lets block external dns servers, lets block vpn services, lets block URL's, lets block VPS servers, lets block usenet, the list goes on, until eventually they do get to block everything.
    It's a slippery slope.
It's not the governments business to restrict free trade, restrict private individuals rights to information, enforce multinational businesses' policies.

    • And you thought only the commies does this.

      • +8

First they came for the dns resolvers, and I did not speak out—
        Because I could change dns.

Then they came for the torrenters, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a torrenter.

Then they came for the vpn'ers, and I did not speak out—
        Because I was not a vpn'er.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

        • What were you? Mega reddit links or usenet?

    • +2

Australia wants to outdo Commie China when it comes to totalitarianism. Democracy is supposed to be the opposite of totalitarianism but in practice it is almost the same: a ruling elite imposing it's monstrous values upon the proletariat. Individual liberties mean nothing in Australia. Every year our leviathan nany state reduces our choices and liberties. For years now the government has been recording every website we visit and every phone number we contact. Banning VPNs is the next step.

What we need is a popular uprising against the govenment like they had in France recently. Australians need to stand up to the neo-liberal corporate shills running the country.

      • A steady supply of grog, footy and degeneracy ensures nothing will change anytime soon. Most are happy to keep it going. What problem?! They keepin' us safe from terroristz lol

  • WOrks for me, just don't us tpg dns

  • I use TPG in Brisbane and didn't work, but changed DNS and was okay.

  • You heard of netflix

  • Link works fine for me on Bigpond NBN.

  • invest in a vpn?

  • I use Google's Public DNS, and it seems like the ISP doesn't filter it. Plus, allows Google to know where I am at all times… sp00py music

  • Had to change away from Internode DNS servers as a few of the sites I regularly use are now blocked. Google DNS works fine :)

  • +1

All ISP's are legally bound to do it, not just TPG. Don't gang up on TPG, they were just the first to obey a law they have no choice in the matter.

  • -2

What a disgrace it is that the Australian Government looks after American media companies at the expense of Aussie citizens. These pigs seem to have forgotten they represent Australia. Its why they exist.

  • So if ISPs are liable for what their customers view on the net, are mobile companies responsible for any crimes organised using their mobile network?
Car manufacturers responsible for speeding fines?

    • I don't know about that, but I heard a rumor that the water company is responsible if you drown someone in your bath tub…

  • I don't know about you guys, I tried different DNS settings in my LAN Properties and didn't work.
This is with /flush dns and confirming I am using the new DNS via 'whatsmyip'.

Maybe only way is not to use a TPG router.

    • +1

dont use those settings mate , they are rubbish and there is no need to go to all the trouble of command prompting , but make sure you dont just change the IPV4 settings TPG also tracks the V6 settings too log into your modem and restart it from the web portal

      • Thanks man, that sorted it out!

        • youre welcome mate

  • +1

TPG has blocked a bucket load of sites as im with the "other" ISP they own , but the fix is easy , change your IPV4 and V6 to 1.1.1.1's settings then log into your modem, mines a technicolor for FTTP reboot your modem and voila ! youre back on your favourite sites

    • so now that i'm using this cloudfare dns of 1.1.1.1
what does that mean? all my traffic is logged to them?

      • they dont log anything mate
