Whilst the new 20xx laptops are supposedly around the corner in January 2019, Dell has discounted their high spec configuration for the Alienware m15 thin and light (for Alienware) gaming laptop by $900 down to $3,099 (original price $3,999 delivered) as part of their 2018 Boxing Day sales.

Key specs:
8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8750H (6-Core, 9MB Cache, up to 4.1GHz w/ Turbo Boost)
Windows 10 Home 64bit English
32GB 2x16GB DDR4-2666MHz
512GB PCIe M.2 SSD + 1TB (+8GB SSHD) Hybrid Drive
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 Max-Q design with 8GB GDDR5
15.6" UHD (3840 x 2160) 60Hz IPS, 400-nits, sRGB 100% color gamut, Narrow-Border - Epic Silver
Killer Wireless 1550 2x2 AC and Bluetooth 5.0

There's also a $155 'reward' (ie. a voucher which you can use on Dell in the future).

I was tempted by the m15 to replace my Alienware 13R3 OLED which I ordered around this time last year for a similar price but with the potential for new laptop GPUs being announced on 7 January 2019, and this not feeling like a significant step up besides going from 1060 to 1070 Max Q and cheap 2.5" HDD storage, I'm not keen on giving up on Windows Hello or my beautiful OLED with touch. On a related note, I am bought into the Alienware ecosystem as I have a graphics amplifier with a 1080Ti which outperforms TB3 eGPUs and cost significantly less.

Most of the reviews are relatively positive but issues around the cheap plastic bezels (potentially on the non 4K models as Dell usually has a nice glass around the bezels in my experience on others) and the heat being worrying.

[UPDATE 24/12/2018] Further 5% off thanks to lostn's coupon of ENGINEERS5OFF which brings it down from $3,099 to $2,944 (a further $155 off). Note that this may NOT be eligible for the 3% Cashrewards as a result.

[UPDATE 27/12/2018] Cashrewards is 7% for Boxing Day which potentially brings this down to $2,901 (calculated using GST-exclusive price).

[UPDATE 31/12/2018] Just noted that the Dell Boxing Day sale is now extended until 3 January 2019.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2018

  • What else is that code useable on? And how much does it discount by?

The specs are good, but I want to see if there's something cheaper if we can reduce the UHD into FHD, drop the HDD, and maybe downgrade to 1060 Max-Q, possibly 16GB RAM.

Then again, I'm not a huge fan of Alienware's non-rectangular shaped designs. It adds to the footprint. It's hard to beat Razer Blade 15's design.

    • Discounts across the range of Alienware but lower spec machines get less discount > https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/cty/pdp/spd/alienware-m15-la…

      (ie. $400 off base spec m15 with a 1060 down to $2399; or $700 off mid-range 1070 m15 down to $2799 with 1080p)

Hmm. AW doesn't do 144hz displays. That's disappointing.

        Would rather have FHD @ 144 than 4K @ 60.

        • You can customise the machine for 144hz 1080p

        • You need to start with a lower spec model and option in the 144hz 1080p. Unfortunately you can’t “downgrade” from the 4K in this configuration to the 144hz panel. Funnily enough when you upgrade the next configuration down to same spec as this deal but with the 144hz, it costs more!

@jace88: $2898 for the model down but with 144hz. Doesn't seem worth it since you lose quite a lot else for it.

For the specs I'm after, you can get GS65 or Razer Blade cheaper.

Hard to go back to 60hz once spoiled by 120hz goodness.

  • are these prone to overheating ?

Most of the reviews on YouTube suggest thermal is pretty good Dave2D and MobileTechReview just to name a few

      • +2

MTR said the thermals are not good. They hit the 100C limit and throttle.

Alienware used to be the best, but they've been surpassed by a number of competitors now.

What annoys me is that it’ll lose charge while gaming even when plugged into the included AC adaptor. I could just buy a 240w brick but why should I have to!

        • I think all the 8th Gen laptop will hit 100 and throttle but the thing is after it straight throttling at about 90ish it can maintain higher clock compared to other laptop in the same aefment, MTR did specify they all run hot but didn't actually compare to throttle turbo boost speed. Look up some detail performance review to get the bigger picture

60hz screen is such a bummer, would much preferred a 1080p Gsync enabled 144hz panel, I wouldn't pay this much for a premium gaming laptop like this.

    • +1

Yeah this price range without a 100hz+ screen is insane..

Code ENGINEERS5OFF will bring the price down to $2,944.05

    Save a further $155.

    • Thanks lostn. Updated.

I bought two laptops (XPS 15 and Inspiron 15 7000) this weekend using that code via separate orders, with Shopback 4% cashback and both of them tracked within minutes.

I once used a Dell Advantage coupon with Shopback and that one tracked also.

Maybe Shopback is better than Cashrewards at tracking non-approved promo codes?

It's a good idea to have both cashback accounts. Whichever one has the higher rate, I switch to.

        • Is there a risk they don't get paid though? As in it may track now but not actually get paid out?

I'm mindful today there's even 7% Cashrewards… so debating if I do proceed, I'd rather go with 7% Cashrewards over 5% coupon. But ideally would be great to do both!

@jace88: I don't know about CR but when I had a dell advantage coupon, SB did pay it out.

No one knows for sure but it's worth a shot.

Maybe it will track with CR also but it's an unknown, whereas SB I have first hand experience it will track. I think it will get paid out. If your code is not approved you won't even get to the tracking stage. I haven't had tracked transactions not be paid out unless there was a refund.

  • Was about to bite the bullet and just order one but then saw a video on Alienware's Youtube channel highlighting new m15 hardware upgrades coming post CES (240hz screen… which not useful for me, indicates there may be other new features available). With that in mind, I decided to just wait for new GPUs.

    • Dell released m15 late October 2018. At CES, they’ll announce an update (to generate publicity) but I can’t see them selling it - they’ll need to drench existing stock and alter production run with their OEMs and that won’t make sense at this early stage of the lifecycle.

      • True but I think there may be an expansion of options eg nebula red on 4K, or other small upgrades which might be useful. I’m still surprised it was $900 off for their flagship configuration already which indicates not stellar sales.

        • I’m still surprised it was $900 off for their flagship … indicates not stellar sales.

Dell always* discounts heavily during Boxing Day period.

          • @AlexF: True, but given how new it is… thought they would've held back a bit. I bought an Alienware from Dell during their Boxing Day sales last year and agree that it's a decent discount.

      • The updates on the m15 (and new m17) isn't too shabby.. RTX 2060, 2070 and 2080; new screen options for m15, etc.
