It might be an alright deal if it supported blurays too instead of a 20 year old format

My computers don't have any optical drives for the last ten years.

I have one in mine but the motherboard doesn't have any IDE connections for it. I can still amuse myself making the tray go in an out.

I illegally download movies and TV shows I legally already own because it is less of a hassle than ripping them.

… of DVDs? They've surely only got a few years left before they're totally obsolete.

    • Not really. Not all titles have made it to Blu-ray and beyond. I use the programme plus MakeMkv to rip DVDs which are irreplaceable and send them to my NAS and access them from anywhere with Plex, Kodi or the WD NAS software on my devices.

I have a great archive of programmes that may or may not ever be available on the VSOD services (Video Subscriptions On Deman) like Netflix etc. and will disappear completely once DVD & Blu-ray titles have been written down and sold off for a pittance by rights hollders or their agents.

Fifty years ago TV networks never gave consideration to archiving their programmes and would 'scrub' the recorded videotapes after broadcast to maximise the use out of them.

When the BBC decided about 20 years ago to re-launch 'Dr. Who' from the beginning, their library had a large deficit of missing episodes from the early series and were fortunate to put a global call out and were able to replace them from tapes that the ABC and NZBC still had in their own libraries.
