I've Had It with Auspost "Expected Delivery Times"

TLDR: This is just me whining on about how AusPost can never accurately state a delivery time/date.

If you clicked on this I take it you either share the same opinion, work for AusPost and want to flame me, or are just heaps bored.

Before everyone gets off track, I know delays are to be expected at Christmas time. This is about the lack of communication. How hard would it have been to send a message "your parcel is unlikely to be delivered today" rather than sending a message saying its onboard for delivery for 4 straight days.

Ok - so I order 2 parcels with delivery via AusPost (groan!) that are supposed to be delivered on the 21st and 27th respectively. That's ok with me, because one is a Christmas present and the other is a birthday present. This was the 19th.

First parcel - signature required.
On the 21st I get a message saying its coming for delivery today, before 5pm. Doesn't come, so I stay home all day waiting.
22nd (Saturday) I get a message saying its coming before 12 noon. Doesn't come, so I spend half the day waiting.
23rd (Sunday) I get a message saying it will be delivered before close of business today. Doesn't come.
Meanwhile - expected delivery date still shows the 21st.
24th (Christmas Eve!) I get a message saying its onboard for delivery. Comes at around 5:15pm. Leave at around 5:30pm for the shops to buy the rest of my presents.

Expected delivery date shows 21st and apparently tracking shows it as "delivered" to me on the 21st.

Second parcel - signature not required.
On the 23rd I get an email - sorry your order will be delayed - estimated delivery date 31st December*
Supposed to take 4 business days. As of the 26th it's still in Melbourne (bound for Sydney)
On the 27th (today) I get a message saying - your delivery is coming tomorrow. Wonder if it actually will?

Edit: Yeah came at 7:15am. Oh well, now I've got it at least?

See how I'm not complaining that this is a day late? I know this is to be expected. All I'm saying is the first parcel couldn't possibly have been on the truck 4 days without being delivered. Second parcel actually turned out alright not sure how it got here so quickly seeing as it was in Melbourne on the 26th and supposed to take 4 business days though lol, I'm not complaining!

It's frustrating because I had to go out and buy another present because this one was not going to come in time. Now I'm going to have this also coming (maybe) which is what I originally wanted to give but the present I have bought now is not refundable.

Has anyone else had experiences like this with AusPost?
I understand it's Christmas Time, busy and all that but really? This is our government postal service. I've ordered in advance for "Christmas cut off dates" before and not had a problem.

And hide the evidence to the contrary as in the OP:

and apparently tracking shows it as "delivered" to me on the 21st.

pffftt… I had my delivery signed for from a person that wasnt even in my suburb

eg: It went to 123 What Street instead of 123 Watt Drive. It was ID + signature on delivery and they still just let them have it, even though it was not the right address, nor the right person…

    • Almost happened to me too, lucky the receiver was nice enough to reject it, what ended up happening with yours? Did AP go retrieve it?

      • +1

I also had this issue. AP contacted the postman and they were able to retrieve the package and I got it over a week later…

        • +3

Had a parcel delivered about 5 houses down the street.
Old mate was nice enough to come to my place and knock on my door after signing for it.

After calling AusPost they said that if he had refused it because it was the wrong address they would've returned it to sender because THEY decided to deliver it to the wrong address.

      • +4

Ironically, what happened to mine was it was delivered to the house of a postal worker. Her husband didn’t take any notice and just signed for it. Story was, when he got it inside, noticed it wasn’t for them and called his wife…

Well! She drove straight home to pick up the parcel and put it back through the system. Stupid thing is, my place is between theirs and the post office. But she couldn’t just drop it off because of the error having to be undone and she didn’t have a signature machine with her.

Took another day and a half to go 4km… :/

        • +5

To be fair, that's exactly what you would want to happen if something goes astray (parcel deliverers are contractors). If the parcel just gets hand delivered from the wrong address, there is no chain of custody and that would be ripe for corruption

          • +5

@GaryQ: The issue is that it was and ID + signature on delivery. When the guys ID and address did not match, it should not have been delivered. End of story. If it was delivered to anywhere but a postal workers house, the item would never have been returned.

So, no, Im sorry, there is no "to be fair" in this. It was only very very very good luck that the stars aligned and it just happened to fall into the hands of someone that would do the right thing. How it was handled after that was great and I have no issue, but that isnt what my original gripe was all about.

            • @pegaxs: Just backing up what Gary said (I know this part isn’t your gripe but it may help others understand)
That’s exactly why they returned it to post office. Being posties themselves they know that, if Incorrectly delivered it would have the last scan and signature at the posties house. A person could then receive the package without going through “the system” and could claim they never received it still. Postie would be the one they point fingers to as it was his house that the scanning ended.

Not saying you would have done this but many people out there do and he would have had no leg to stand on as gps, signature and everything as far as aus post is concerned ended at his address not yours.

But yes mistakes happen and it seems they are happening more often lately which really sucks and I’ve had the same thing happen to me :/

I’m glad you got it back in the end!

    • same thing happened to me - not once but twice in the week

    • My postie signs the parcels himself and just dumps them at the doorstep, so I've often ended up with packages for people a street over, or MY parcels ending up at a neighbor's house (who thankfully then delivers it to me). It's frustrating as hell. Complained to AusPost about this and they said they'll "have a talk with him" but nothing has changed.

Consider it a learning experience. Finalise your Xmas shopping in November to allow for the (well known and documented) degraded AusPost service.

    • Consider it a learning experience.

I've done this before without any dramas. In fact, I've left it until later and it's still arrived earlier than this. The actual time doesn't bug me so much as actually not knowing when it's going to come. I would've been completely fine with it coming Christmas Eve 5:15pm if it had told me that it would be delivered then.

Finalise your Xmas shopping in November

Why and how would I do that? November is actually quite a busy time of year for me without thinking of Christmas presents + birthday presents for a month away (+ a birthday in November)

      • +8

Christmas is the same date every year. It's not like you have zero warning. Plan ahead. Expect delays. Expect the worst. It's not that complicated.

        • -6

I have a feeling you haven't even read my issue.

          • I can do Christmas shopping at this time every year and not have a drama. I can do it even later and not have issues.
          • Second parcel actually came earlier than expected
          • +2

@pennypincher98: Solved: you should have done it even later

          • @pennypincher98: Not sure what I was on when I wrote this (if I could neg myself I probably would because of how that sounds).

My actual issue is of the lack of communication AusPost provided. They just told me to wait around for 4 days expecting a delivery that I had to sign for..

I guess it is kind of unfair to nail AusPost for this but neglect to tell the good experiences. Most of the time if a parcel isn't going to be delivered I get a message saying it won't be. Or the tracking updates and tells me a new ETA.

    • Funny enough I bought something on eBay on the 28th of Nov and it won't be here till early Jan. Glad it wasn't a Christmas gift.

The parcel got bounced around the country and then it was "address doesn't exist" after a while. Even more confusing was I ordered two parcels from the same place and the second one arrived within 2 days.

Oh and yes this was an item from within Australia not one of those pretend to be in Australia but actually in China eBay sellers.

  • +5

Understand the op being annoyed with austpost as many are. Look at their thread on Whirlpool and also Facebook.
If they cannot honour stated delivery times then just remove the function from their service.
AustPost has deteriorated, we all know that, yet they still see fit to pay the ceo and other senior staff very high salaries.

  • +6

This is our government postal service

No it isn't, Australia Post was corporatised. This means the Government owns it but it's run like a privately owned corporation and is therefore shit at everything as it constantly looks to cut costs by screwing it's workforce and extracting more money from it's customers.

The one area where it is accessible, affordable and reliable is letters under 250g. That's the area where there's no competition and tight regulation unlike everywhere else.

  • +1

the present I have bought now is not refundable

What were you going to do if it arrived late? Return the late item?

The reality is that there isn't a carrier in Australia with service that doesn't deteriorate over the Xmas period. One day late is OK.

With that said, if you're relying on fast turn around time, pay for StarTrack premium.

    • -4

Ok just so we are clear here I bought on a item online first (on the 15th, dispatched on the 17th late, and delivery date of 21st was on the 18th), second parcels delivery date was provided on the 19th. But that's all backstory.
I can return it or keep it for a present next year I guess??

The reality is (which I know because I work in a place that sends a lot of parcels to and from overseas to others in Australia) that everyone else can keep to time.
DHL/TNT/Couriers Please/Fastway all are accurate and reliable (95% of the time). AusPost is laden with issues.

Had there been an option to ship with someone else I would've gladly taken it.

Also it's not really "one day late" because it stuffed me around for almost 4 days.
Free standard shipping or express post for $30. It wasn't really worth it to me, the cart total was only around $60.

      • +2

Also it's not really "one day late" because it stuffed me around for almost 4 days.

If you work in logistics, then you'd know that from a DIFOT perspective, it's one day late - end of.

Free standard shipping or express post for $30. It wasn't really worth it to me, the cart total was only around $60.

You get the service that you pay for.

Again, want a premium service, use StarTrack. It is by far the industry leader for parcels.

        • If you work in logistics, then you'd know that from a DIFOT perspective, it's one day late - end of.

Not when Saturday and Sunday deliveries are involved. Sure it's one business day late, but I got told it would come consecutively for four days.

want a premium service, use StarTrack.

Are you assuming I had a choice in the matter? It was either a standard post satchel or an express post satchel (large).

Funnily enough, when it did come it came in a Budget rent a truck.

      • DHL/TNT/Couriers Please/Fastway all are accurate and reliable (95% of the time). AusPost is laden with issues.

Hahaha.. Sorry, I've had to stop using eBay sellers that use Fastway, the Melbourne franchise is that bad (two separate packages marked delivered. No idea where, seller had to resend). Their email server was down one of those times too, and the phone people only handle sales and tracking.

Australia Post is far from perfect, but at least in my area they're typically the most reliable, and my local postie parcel dude actually tries the intercom, the courier services range from 0-50% on that.

Oh, and I've seen a parcel wait several days in a UPS depot after clearing customs, because I hadnt paid for delivery that quick… Can't get delivery times you didn't pay for…

        • Oh, and I've seen a parcel wait several days in a UPS depot after clearing customs, because I hadnt paid for delivery that quick… Can't get delivery times you didn't pay for…

We are just talking about in Australia. International deliveries (which I am well familiar with) do this on a regular basis - something I actually agree with and respect.

I don't use Fastway often (just normally Sydney-Sydney parcels or Sydney-Newcastle) but when I do, service is reliable.

Most of the time the actual purchaser of the goods specifies what courier they would like.

For an anecdotal counter example, I have found aus post delivery to be very predictable even leading up to xmas, with almost all items arriving on the expected delivery date.

  • +1

Not exactly the same but I ordered something express post (I.e. next day metro delivery) that was shipped on the 18th and it was delivered on the 24th. The only tracking entry was from the pickup on the 18th & estimated delivery stayed at 19th the whole time. Calling Australia Post they could tell me nothing.

  • +6

Why buy around xmas? thats why buy things earlier and you wouldn't have delays.

22nd (Saturday) I get a message saying its coming before 12 noon. Doesn't come, so I spend half the day waiting.

since when does aust post delivery on saturdays or sundays?

    • +3

      Only during the Christmas season

    • I'd say it'd be overtime to meet demand due to the time of year perhaps?

    • Contractors, I had deliveries from DHL on Sundays, should have been Thursday. Looks like some of the contractors collect a few parcels in the same area before setting off for a delivery.

  • +3

    Toll sucks more balls

    • Well there's another whole problem in itself haha.

Notice how here I left it off?

DHL/TNT/Couriers Please/Fastway all are accurate and reliable (95% of the time). AusPost is laden with issues.

Difference is I don't really need to deal with Toll. Everyone seems to use AusPost :(

    • I haven't really had any problems with Aus Post, except for the time my parcel got stuck doing laps in their professing centre. Even then they were really helpful with finding it. TOLL on the other hand have been an absolute nightmare a few times. Would much rather deal with AP.

  • +1

I've said it many times, use a parcel locker. No need to wait around or sign for parcels. Pick them up at your convenience.

    • My nearest parcel locker is 40 mins away :( I've got one right near my work - but I work over an hour away - and close over the Christmas break.

And even my nearest post office isn't really an option (it's also 15 mins away), there is always so much of a queue I'm not wanting to waste half my day in there.

Trust me, I use a parcel locker whenever I can.

      • click and collect at bigw/woolies is also an option if buying on ebay. much easier and they are open till 9pm.

        • -2

Yeah if buying on eBay that's a good option. My closest that does it is a Woolies around 10-15 minutes away (quite sure it's not open until 9pm though).

          • @pennypincher98: In an effort to understand these negs, my closest Woolies is 13 minutes drive away (Google Maps) and is open until 10pm. They've recently extended their hours - they used to close at 8.

My nearest Big W is around 22 minutes drive.

      • My nearest parcel locker is 40 mins away :(

Geez, and I thought I had it tough when there's none in my local government area, but can drive to the one in the next local government area ten minutes away from my house.

Is that 40 minutes away by car, or by public transport?

        • Just googled: it's actually 45 minutes by car. Best on public transport I can see is 1 hr 23 min.

Parcel Lockers aren't actually that widespread. In Newcastle there is one (Callaghan/Newcastle University, out west) and on the Central Coast there is one (Woy Woy Train Station).
          Plenty in Sydney though!

          • @pennypincher98:

            Plenty in Sydney though!

Not in Fairfield City (where I live); have to drive to the ones in Liverpool if I want stuff delivered to a Parcel Locker.

But yes, Sydney City has heaps! Even Woolies Town Hall has one!

            • @kerfuffle: Yeah I looked at Fairfield and wow they seem to literally have ones literally all in a circle around it but none actually in there..
              Even Northern Beaches/Shore has plenty.

For Sydney though, that's pretty bad.

              • +1

@pennypincher98: Northern Beaches/Shore is a higher socioeconomic area compared to Fairfield City; maybe they think no one orders anything from the internet here.

I read in a SMH article that Liverpool was actually the number one suburb for online shopping, followed by Gosford

                • +1

@kerfuffle: Yeah that whole Northern belt of Sydney gets treated with the utmost care.

Funnily enough I read an SMH article about drug users and it was also Gosford followed by Liverpool 😂

I can understand why everyone online shops in Gosford. There's only basically Erina Fair to go for shops and it's excessive at the best of times. Christmas/Boxing Day everyone flocks there and it's a nightmare.

Weird - no Parcel Locker at Gosford but one at Woy Woy?

    • Not every parcel is eligible for parcel Locker and not every seller ships to parcel Locker.

  • +1

Not a fan of Australia Post but weather in sydney was crazy last week and Australia Post stated on their website that deliveries in NSW will be affected. It's the last weekend for xmas deliveries so bad weather + xmas probably made it worse than usual.

    • + extra parcel inspections to catch schoolies ordering drugs.

  • +1

I've found that even during the middle months of the year that strange things regularly happen with the tracking predictions from Aus Post. Might take two or more days than the expected date for example (sometimes more). The naughty thing is that I never get the survey sent to me for any delivery that was later than expected. That's manipulation of performance statistics as far as I'm concerned.

  • +1

TL;DR - Australian leaves it til December to order gifts and is surprised and unhappy about delays.

FWIW I am still waiting for a parcel ordered before Xmas sent by Express Post. Tracking is stuck at 'in transit'. lulz.

I am still waiting for a parcel ordered before Xmas sent by Express Post

I'll give your own reply back to you.

Christmas is the same date every year. It's not like you have zero warning. Plan ahead. Expect delays. Expect the worst. It's not that complicated.

Btw I don't think you're TLDR is fair. I didn't actually care about the delays. What frustrated me was it told me every day for 4 days it was coming, and then didn't come until the evening of the fourth.
Surely there wasn't that many parcels in the truck that it took 4 days to deliver them all (without putting any more in).

      • I'll give your own reply back to you.

No. The difference between your situation and mine is 1. I wasn't expecting or hoping my parcel would arrive for a certain date, ie. Xmas or a birthday. I bought an item on sale which included free express postage. It was days late, but IDGAF tbh. I could kick up a storm but have better ways of exhausting my energy. The way I see it, is you can't be shocked about delays around Xmas… especially if you are familiar in any way with OzPost.

I didn't actually care about the delays. What frustrated me was it told me every day for 4 days it was coming, and then didn't come until the evening of the fourth.

If you didn't care about the delays, I am not sure what the entire thread exists for? Frustration with 'expected' delivery dates? Cos, ya know, those are estimates…

  • Honestly, they have got better. I ran a thriving online business between 2009 and 2015 and much of my time was spent chasing up Australia Post for customers - lost packages, wrong suburbs, massive delays etc. Before things started going downhill for the business in 2016-2017, I had almost no issues.

A good news story based on Auspost's incompetence…….

Had to replace a box aircon unit in my daughter's room so grabbed the Delongi on eBay @20% off for $255 + $38 guaranteed 5 day delivery. Auspost delivered 1 day late, reported late delivery to ebay and woohoo $38 back in paypal account within minutes! Suck it AUSPOST!!!!!!!

i recently got a parcel delivered, and then 5 minutes later got an sms saying looks like your parcel wont be delivered today

    good job!

  • I remember receiving an email asking for feedback after a delivery, where it proudly stated that over 90% of all parcels are delivered within 3 days of the expected delivery date. Isn't that just another way of saying over 90% of all parcels are delivered late?

    A.

  • Yup i ordered a parcel on the 11th and it was posted on the 11th with express delivery - i needed it on the 16th… of course it arrived on the 17th. I called and complained and also complained via facebook.. all were useless. We need to rally for better service.

No point paying for express when they treat it as normal post sigh

  • I too, have had bad experiences, but just to balance things out, I would like to post about a positive one. My sister gave my kids a tablet for xmas, and I went online xmas day and ordered a screen protector for it, with the expected delivery of 3rd Jan (fine with me). I got an email to say they had been posted, and I received them on Thursday!! So basically the first delivery day after public hols.
    Awesome service this time around.

    • with the expected delivery of 3rd Jan (fine with me). I got an email to say they had been posted, and I received them on Thursday!!

Great, but did they actually let you know it was coming earlier? I guess with a screen protector it's not that important, just yay if it comes quicker.

I'm amazed at how an item can be in Melbourne on the 26th and reach the Central Coast at 7:15am on the 28th. Supposed to take 4 business days. Normally takes a day or two to get from Sydney to Central Coast.
Normally I can only get those kinds of turnarounds in Sydney (Macquarie Park).

      • No, I didnt have any other notifications, as it was a letter, with stamps, not a label, so no tracking.
But prior to this I had two different deliveries, on different days, that said my parcel was coming today, then at about 2pm I got an updated message saying "its unlikely your parcel will be delivered today", and then they got delivered the next day.

        • That would be great if I got the "unlikely to be delivered today" message…

  • +1

My friend who works as a truck driver for AusPost said that parcel volume was up 30% this year over 2017 by early December and the record rise began around the first week of November. So I think AP was majorly unprepared for this and I contributed to this with 3 orders from websites. All my orders came within good time and I am in inner Melbourne, so it may depend where you live and how many parcel delivery contractors are working your area.

I also read that over 2,000 new mail items are pushed onto AP's "dead letter" team every single day because of missing or damaged address labels.

    • Looks like logistics didn't prepare for the onslaught of Amazon.au

  • Have now waited 13 business days for a regular parcel from QLD to Perth. Hasn't shown yet. Is this totally out of the ordinary for this time of the year?

  • Happened to me thrice during the last 6 months. They will send a text something like "Your parcel is arriving on 12/10/18", and it never arrives on that day. I live in East Melbourne like 15Kms from CBD, so its not a remote area. I wonder why do they even bother to send text messages like these when they have no plans to honour their words. They are ruining their own reputation with acts like these.

  • +1

I would spend $3000-4000 a year with Austpost sending parcels a few times a week, 95% is delivered within time. A few get delayed, but most people are fine

I got caught up in Canada postal strike and also South Africa postal strike so that was around 2 weeks delay with each instance. Can’t blame Aust Post though.

Nobody is perfect, plus during Xmas it’s hard to get an item on time.

  • I get parcels at least 4 times a month and all my deliveries have been on time or even early. Maybe just lucky.

  • From what I have heard it's the subcontractors causing most of the problems as they don't contract to Aust Post. They work for the main contractor. All the ones that have been caught on camera have been subbies. I guess thats the main problem with the NBN too. All the install work is being done by incompetent subbies.

    • from what ive heard people on minimum wage dont really put in all that much effort, and dont care if your 3 day parcel is delivered on the 4th day

      • Exactly. The subbies aren't paid under any sort of rate set by Aussie post. They are paid what the contractor decides to pay them per parcel. Hence why they rush and drop the cards in the mail box rather than deliver them. The contractors getting the routes from Aussie Post are making a killing from underpaying the subbies to deliver the parcels.

  • I had a parcel take seventeen days to travel <400km.

Their tracking system had no info to explain the delay.

  • For the last 6 months, every time I had an incoming parcel I would get an SMS at 11am saying that my parcel was due to arrive the next day.
The next day at 11:30 am I would get a second automated SMS saying that it was unlikely to arrive today.

The mail at my address usually arrives between 2-3pm each day. Some days the parcel would be in there, some days it wouldn't be and they following day I'd get the unlikely to arrive SMS again.

It looks like an absolutely pathetic attempt at automation has gone wrong and they don't have a clue on how to fix it.

  • Never heard of Auspost delivering on the weekend for my area. If i don't see anything by 6pm Friday night, i always told myself it will be at least Monday before i get it.

  • It is the result efficiency improvement after paying the then CEO for 10 million.

  • Speaking of Christmas, you should always hold the commercial event (i.e. gift giving) after the ceremonial day. This gives you access to Boxing Day specials (and 75% off Toffee Flavoured Custard at Coles, which was thick and delicious).

    • Yeah and christmas lunch with all the specials from Coles/Woolies/ALDI - eg fruit mince pies 6pk 37c, 400g Christmas Pudding 62c etc.

Just need to convince everyone now not to celebrate Christmas on Christmas.

With AusPost, it depends a lot on the load (from the source state to the destination state) and the day the sender sent the items. Monday is generally the best day. Wednesday purchases are always tricky for me. Friday purchases, despite I send them out on the same day, they are generally basically the same as sending them out next Monday (except Express Post).

If you must get items before Christmas, and you decide to make a purchase on the week before Christmas (i.e. 16/12/2018 this year), there is a risk of some parcels simply won't arrive before Christmas. That is because the estimated parcel volume for the Monday 1 week before Christmas this year was up to 3 millions parcels (just for that day). Furthermore, certain vendors might have special SLA with AusPost (i.e. Amazon) so some of their parcels could have higher priority despite being standard parcels. If the state's main delivery distribution point has a huge load, some parcels would be bumped to the next day (maybe more days).

Honestly, if you must get an item close to Christmas delivered on time, StarTrack is the better choice. 2+ millions new parcels in 1 day is just AUS parcels, you still need to add international parcels arriving here to be delivered. AusPost have the burden to deliver those international parcels too. That's just 1 day. The volume is really huge around Christmas as many people try to squeeze in last minute online shopping. Australia is also big.

Let's just say 2 millions parcels. Each parcel takes 3 minutes to deliver (wishful thinking). That's 6 million minutes, roughly 12,500 working days for 1 person. Try to be more opened minded and not forget that AusPost in most cases, do deliver close to the estimated delivery day throughout the year.

An accurate guide would be Estimated date +5.

  • I was supposed to have a package come on the 27th so I had it redirected to a friend because I am away. The date of arrival changed to the 31st which was a bit weird but whatever it still wouldn't be sitting around in my letter box for a week. On the 24th I get an email telling me it is being delivered that day with my friend's post code so I let her know and was a bit annoyed because I was home then. She told me that it hadn't arrive so I was a bit worried. I got home from work and there it was waiting at my door. Aus post delivered my parcel a week early to the wrong address and still told me they sent it to the new address.
