Steam Controller $44.90 @ EB Games (In-Store Only)

550

Walking past EB Games and noticed they had 50% off their Steam controllers in store. Down from $89 to $44.90. My original steam controller is falling apart so bought a new one.

*Their website still lists it at $89.00, unsure if it's an in-store only deal kind of thing?

    Steam Controller $44.90

Where do you add the water?

    • +3

      It controls steam, not water.

    • +4

It is a Valve controller lol

      • +1

Please control them to make HL3.

    • +1

Where do you add the water?

Anywhere on your body. Once the boiling water you splash onto your body turns into steam, the controller can control the steam.

    Falling apart?
must not be very good quality if it's falling apart..
Or you don't treat it very well..

Left it on my bed and dog got into the bedroom and chewed on it. After that happened I changed my bedroom door handle to a round one.

Picked one up on Wednesday, haven't got the configuration worked out in Steam yet. But then again, haven't tried much.
Feels very much like the Vive controllers which I was after. Much more precision with the touchpad than any analog stick.

going in to get one now, yep price is $44.95 :)

    • Updated the controller with the Bluetooth capable firmware, took me quite a while mucking around before it updated, tried changing usb ports, removed batteries, killed steam eventually got it to do it. all good now.

  • +3

Have had this controller since they were released and they are top tier quality.
Possibly most comfortable and best quality out of the more common controllers (ps4/xbox).
I play Rocket League with this controller and damn, I am unstoppable.
It would have preferred if it had a normal dpad though, I haven't needed to use the touch sensitive feature on the left side and if had a nice dpad this would have been absolutely heaven for 2d platformers, fighters and emulation.

    • How long did it take you to get used of the big trackpad to use as camera control? I just got the controller and I'm finding that very difficult to control. Otherwise ok controller.

  • Bought this earlier today at the Chatswood store, apparently got the 2nd last one.

  • +1

Are these any good for the Shield TV?

    • +5

Nope, unless you're using the SteamLink app, it only has the mouse movements and left/right click with the shoulder buttons available. Doesn't work with RetroArch or anything else sadly.

      • Cheers mate, saved me wasting some money and…worse…effort.

  • Does it work out of the box with steam games? I heard you have to customize controls with this for each games.

    • Most people do that anyway per game :)

    • Most games have a default configuration but if there isn't you can either customise your own or download a community config submitted by other users. It's been really good for me, plays 99% of my steam games no issues in the last 2 years.

      • Have you used an xbox one controller and if so is this better? I have an unopened xbox controller that I might return and buy this if it's good. Plug and play is nice for me but if the actual game experience is better with this controller then I'm willing to spend a few minutes tinkering with controls.
Games I plan to play : Rocket League, Witcher 2, Dark Souls etc.
Also, have you favored using this controller with games that already have perfect mouse and keyboard support or is it only useful for games with bad KB & mouse controls?

        • I bought the steam controller a couple of years back, tried it for about a month but just couldn't get used to it, so went and bought the xbox one controller.
It's unique and I really gave it a chance but it wasn't for me.

  • Just picked one up. Can confirm the deal is valid in WA too if your store has stock. Now time to test this controller. Hopefully it's good.

    • So how is it

      • Really weird. Using a trackpad to control your camera is what's throwing me off. It's more accurate than an analog stick which is the huge upside, but it's also more difficult. Will probably get used to it with time.
If you can handle it. It allows for 10x smoother movement and gameplay than any other controller but it will be a bitch to get used to it. It's easy to get used to an Xbox One or PS4 controller because they both use analog sticks for the your character and camera but this one isn't easy lol.
There is a default configuration. So technically this can be plug and play but it might be better to change configs if you can't get used to the default one.
The Xbox One controller is $10 more at PLE so that is an option for you if this sounds intimidating. Please remember that I myself have used it for an hour at most so my word isn't that accurate but those are my first impressions of the controller. The peak of this controller is much higher than any other, but getting there is the problem.
The steam controller can replace games with good PC controls which the other two can't.
I say give it a chance. If your local EB is known for being light with returns then give it a chance and if you find it too strange then return it.

You can buy that, sort of turns into a analog stick. I haven't used it in the last year as the dog destroyed it and never bothered replacing. But after a week of using the steam controller you'll get used to the touchpad. I prefer it now over other controllers.

          • @Jarryd90: Haha after using it for a few hours I ended up returning it. I have ordered an Xbox One S controller now.
I felt like I didn't give it a proper shot. However, in the hours of using it I just couldn't get used to it at all.
The steam controller is really fkn cool. If I had more money, I would have kept it 100% just to play with it because I had a lot of fun configuring it and playing with gyro. What I didn't have fun with was the actual gameplay. Which was not a fun experience except in the Witcher 2 which I enjoyed very much with it.

      • Definitely needs some tweaking and open minded-ness. Don't go in expecting a good plug and play experience - because you won't get it. However after a few hours of playing around with it I definitely see the potential and what this controller CAN be once tweaked. If you want to play PC games from your couch for example the steam controller just blows all of the others out of the water. I did play Civ 5 with this and it was not that bad!
I'd try it out 100%, just keep it in really perfect condition incase you don't like it and need to return it.

  • Meh, prefer using ps4 controller for PC

  • Seems cool, I am stuck between getting this or the xbox controller.

Anyone know if this controller capability favors certain types of games . i.e strategy, 2d games, first person shooters?

I want it for Battlefield. Cheers
