Pepsi is expected to buy Sodastream in January for $3.2 billion, so we can probably expect to see some major changes to Sodastream in the coming year.

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/aug/20/pepsi-buy-s…

    • If the refills change too much, I’ll just rig mine up with a large-capacity CO2 cylinder from a hardware store or home brew supplier. It’s apparently quite doable, and you’re not too likely to blow yourself up.

      • I just did this yesterday - bought the cylinder and hose/adaptor from kegland, $130 or so. 2 sizes of cylinder available, just went with the smaller one which can make up to 400L I believe, refills cost $25.

        • So you’re saying a 400L refill costs $25?

          • @Slave1: Yep, roughly. Some places may charge between $25-$35 per refill depending where you go.

            • @mickmac: Nice. Thanks for that. I’ll check it out.

        • Just got my ffirst 6kg refill for 35. I carbonate way more than the piss weak they recommend (tastes much better for coke)
          Still brilliant value

    • "Speculation about Pepsi or Coca-Cola buying SodaStream has bubbled for years." Ho. Ho.

    • In 1994 (or maybe 1995) they changed their labelling to Schweppes varieties (eg Solo, Sunkist, Schweppes Lemonade). I always assumed it was just for marketing and nothing else had changed. I would expect much the same with this. I guess time will tell.

check the cylinder size, some only come with a starter fill of Co2, though a refill is only $19, so it's still a cheap price, but if you run out on the first cylinder it's because it might be a starter and not a dud system, a full cylinder does bottles of soda..

Also some soda stream models you screw in the bottle, and some have a clamping system where you just push the bottle in, which is less fiddly with small kids.

We have the source element which has the clamping system.

Chill water in the fridge before carbonating as it holds more Co2 in saturation so you loose less gas.

    • I have both, the screw in and the clamping, and try as I might I cannot get the clamp to grip properly. I've gone back to the screw in, at least it stays put.

I hate these things but been promising mrs gwsampso one of these for while, took this for a pineapple. Thanks

    • +3

the trick is you need more than 1 bottle as you need to keep cold water in the fridge for the best "gasing experience" so also check specials on extra bottles, spotlight sell soda king which is the same / compatible bottle.

If you only have one bottle you will hate it as the bottles are only 1 litre, not much on a hot day for 2 people, and gasing water straight out of the tap which is sort of warm uses more gas for same fizz.

We also buy the bottles of line juice from coles and squirt some in as we are cutting back on sugar drinks.

If you want cola …. buy from supermarket when on special, the mixes don't taste as good as coke or pepsi and don't save much money compared to when soft drink is on special at 50% off.

If you want soda water it's great as tap water is cheap, and so is the Co2.

      • I prefer 2x 500ml bottles.

    • Was skeptical myself until I bought one. Really refreshing on a hot day and much better than chilled tap water.

Pro tip. Use soda stream with cheap red wine and you get delectable sparkling red for parties. Voila !

    • have you actually tried to carbonate red wine ?

I have thought about doing it but was worried how much gas it holds, as when you use soda stream, you make soda water first, then add juice or syrups, they actually warn about messes trying to carbonate other stuff. Think it has to do with particles in liquids ?

If it works it would open up whole other realm of drinks.

      • +1

You soil the nozzle with wine, no? The nozzle that sits in the water doesn't stay clean

        • Great, slightly alcohol tainted sodapops for the kiddies. Start em young!

          • +2

@THICKnSLOW: you can get kosher and halal wines which are alcohol free ….doubt they taste heavenly though

      • It works.

Wine is around 90% water so the CO2 will dissolve into that.

      • No issues there. It is really up to your imagination and creativity to make interesting stuff. However, I'll be cautious about trying anything with milk in it.

    • Apparently re carbinating soft drinks/ beer doesn't work out (mess), BUT I recon if u had the machine in the fridge and left it for 30mins to an hr before releasing. Then all would be good.

    • Works with Chardonnay and in un carbonated beer as well. Just do it outside.
My favourite is 2 twinings infuse bags in 1ltr cold sparking water.

Haven't you seen this! Looks like a bad idea… Haha

      • He should have used chilled wine, waited a minute for it to settle, did it outside.

        • like the way he says "making it for my dad" surprised human services haven't come and taken his kid away …. "here's me filling my dad's crack pipe".

  • Thx op got one (online for pick up).. been meaning to get one for a while.

Anyone how the proportion in terms of mls, if i'm adding cordial?

    • Up to you! I like it dilute. Some people throw in heaps of cordial

  • Anyone know the difference between the source and jet? Aldi sells Source for 70 bucks I think?

    • +2

I think the aldi one was the "spirit" which is the latest design.

The difference between the "Jet" and every other sodastream (including the spirit and element) is the way the bottle mounts to the machine.

The jet uses the very old screw in mechanism. All other machines use the newer (and much easier) click in mechanism. The click mechanism is worth paying extra for IMHO.

      • +2

Make sure it is clicked in properly. The first time I did it I had water go everywhere.

        • The best time for summer, either in your mouth or everyone else… LoL

I really wish I could find a deal on the glass bottle sodastream.

  • kegland sell a soda stream adapter for $15 that allows you to refill your own off a large cylinder. Makes refills much cheaper and its easy to do.

    • +1

As mentioned in this (expired) deal:

      • +2
        • Nice one! how many times can this fill up the original sodastream cylinder?

          • +1

@ezza: I have filled mine 8 times so far i'm probably not getting a 100% full though. When doing this make sure you freeze the empty bottle before trying to refill it as you will get more in. Refill for the big bottles is around $8-10 a kg from your home brew shops.

            • @TheBoneSetter: Nice I see.. so this cylinder is full? or its just a cylinder? The comments below suggest its not full? I'm a little confused.

Edit… this is for the adapter.. you then need to buy the 2.6k cylinder… i think i understand now :)

        • The 2.6kg cylinders state "Our 2.6Kg gas bottles come ready to fill".

Does that mean they don't come filled anymore?

          • @aoeueoa: has to have specific transport now for Co2 ie so i just got mine from local brew store

            • @TheBoneSetter: Sorry I don't understand. Do you mean that the CO2 has restricted transport so they can only ship it empty?

A local brew shop does a filled 2.6 for $190 which is a huge difference here

              • @aoeueoa: yeah needs proper haz chem transportation. You can still get it delivered but they charge a bit for the transportation.
That price seems expensive to me I paid $115.00 for a filled bottle from my local brew shop. So i suggest looking for another brew shop to buy from

  • Economics of sodastream [2015] (when assuming $99 full price).

    https://www.news.com.au/finance/money/costs/why-sodastream-i…

But yeah, I'd probably use it for a sugar-free punch using mint and lemon from the back yard infused with a pot of jasmine tea.

    • Yeah that's quite outdated now.
With this deal for the $49 price you end up almost square after the first tank vs buying no name soda (82c/L) Then with $18 refills from big w you're looking at 30c/L ongoing.

  • Been looking to buy one for the Mrs. As I have been doing my research I saw they have a dozen models all doing pretty much the same job.. And all models have average ratings of 3.5 online.. That's mainly because of how cheaply they are made in Israel. For this particular model, it wasn't worth it at full price and sadly still not worth it at 50. You will be amazed at how cheap the construction is. You will pick up and put it down on the shelf. Applying a bit of pressure will destroy the thing. Now imagine you have to hold the machine, and push and lock a bottle in and it works with pressured gas.. Summary: great idea and terrible execution. If u really need one pick up the source/element for about 50 more and that too, keep the box and receipt well.

    • I've own/owned the source Element, Play, Spirit and The Power. The Power is my daily driver. The Element is my absolute least favorite machine. It's got an awful clunky mechanism that's not calibrated for use with 500ml bottles.

  • Refill with dry ice? 400g per bottle i believe (i dont have one yet). Any food delivery services still include dry ice. Ie. Lite n easy did.

    • Indeed you can. I've done it a few times. Plenty of videos on YouTube. Dry ice is about $10 per kg, so in theory you can fill 2x 400g cylinders at $5 a piece.

      • Threaded bottle or not doesnt matter?

  • Cheap place to buy extra bottles anyone?

    • Gas Bottles or drink bottles?

      • Drink

Spotlight where they are usually 20-25% off.

Such a fad guys. You get over it quick.

    • +2

Have used mine every day for a couple of years.

      • I just found it needed wayyyy more 'pumps' of gas then what was instructed, thus using up the cylinder way quicker then led to believe. Even then, no where near as fizzy as real bottles. And the screw on top was so fiddly. Buying the 1.25L Aldi sparkling still works out worlds cheaper.

        • Same here
Mine needed quite few extra pumps of gas/
No way will I get 60 bottles out of one cylinder.
Out of interest i am jotting down each time it is relled to see home many refills one cylinder gives,

          • -3

@zuby: This is why I feel it's a fad and you get over it quick. You need to use double, if not three times more pumps then the serving suggestion just to get a half arsed result. Don't waste your money guys!

      • -1

        @ApuN Likewise

    • @LUTSlit @zuby What you are describing is user experience, not fad.

      • -1

People should save their money instead of spending it on this cheap junk.

        • -1

I’m happy with mine. I’m not throwing away lots of plastic bottles and I like the level of fizz I get. I prefer the smaller bubbles. Reminds me of Italian mineral waters.

    • -2

I haven't gotten over the fad of drinking water, actually seems to be catching on with more people drinking water everyday.

I also like that I can adjust the amount if fizziness, all the way from Italian style mineral water which is less fizzy, more like out of the spring, through to Mt Franklin very fizzy.

      • Drinking water is not a fad smarty pants

  • [for those who care] Whether Pepsi finalise the purchase or not Sodastream remains a target of the BDS movement in support of Palestinian rights over its displacement of Bedouin Arabs in the Negev region of Israel and its mistreatment of Palestinians at its former factory in an illegal settlement

    https://bdsmovement.net/news/%E2%80%9Csodastream-still-subje…

    • -2

Pepsi will move manufacturing to another country if they need to, and good chance refills are done in the country people live in rather than shipping gas bottles back to Palestine / Israel.

Pepsi are really buying the concept, brand, distribution network where the value is rather than a factory in Palestine / Israel where arabs assemble units and fill gas bottles.

Soda King in Australia is a competing brand and gets nowhere near the market share.

Ideal would be a unit that uses used soda bottles eg 1.25 litre which people currently throw away or recycle after consuming content.

Hope the Chinese make one at a cheap price….. the patent on carbonating water with Co2 gas must have run out over 100 years ago

      • As things stand though, Sodastream's conduct is at best questionable. I wouldn't buy one for that reason
