Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash - 1.9 Litre $19.88 at Supercheap Auto

590

This popular and decent car wash from Meguiar's is back on sale again at <$20 at Supercheap Auto. Apparently it is pretty good to be used in a snow foam gun too.

      You should have used Napisan.

      • That's for spot cleaning of bird poo.

        • +1

Good to hear you already know how to use it.

        • +1

          Napisan

They say “scratch” I say “polish”.

"Apparently it is pretty good to be used in a snow foam gun too."

Agreed. I use this with my foam cannon and it works great.

    • +2

What sort of foam cannon do you have? Any recommendations please? Never used one before but seen some $20 cheapies on ebay

      • +3

Anything from ebay / aliexpress is fine as long as it is a proper brass construction foam cannon - they are all the same.

I have bought one from Ebay for about 20 bucks. After a lot of research most people recommended it's all one and the same thing. Not sure about the branded ones as I haven't used them but happy with what I have. Similar results to one's we see on Youtube videos.

          Thanks Soothsayer and ashftc.

          Some noob questions
          - What ratio of water/car wash do you use in these?
          - Do you rinse the car first or just start spraying foam on a dry dirty car?

          • +4

@montorola: I use rought 15-20% Meguiars and remaining warm (not hot) water on top of the foam in the bottle. Shake it upside down a bit, attach it with my gerni and it is ready to go. I don't rinse the car before as I believe rinsing beforehand will thin up the foam and it will slip quickly which won't allow to loosen up the grime that effectively. Hope this helps.

            • @ashftc: Great tips, thanks ash!

            • @ashftc: +1 on Foaming before rinse. Foaming is meant to be the first step you do.

For Gold class, its quite thick - I would put 100ml into my 1L lance - can go a little more or little less depending on how foamy you like it.

          • +1

@montorola: According to Meguiar’s snow cannon kit, it says 10% Gold Class liquid, 90% water. Always add water into the bottle first before you add the car wash liquid to prevent excess bubbles forming in the bottle.

            • +1

@edfoo: If you use the 2 bucket method add soap to the foam cannon first, then just hold the bottle under the rinse bucket (plain water) with the spout just out of the top of the water. It will fill slowly and not foam up.

I find it easier to add 100ml of shampoo first then water.

Also when you’re looking for the cheap $25-$30 cannons on ebay, make sure you pick one with markings on the side. Makes it a hell of a lot easier to fill with 100ml of shampoo 👍🏻

@ashftc Can you link me to the ebay item? I use a Gerni as well and the cheapest I can find with a brass connector is $30+. Cheers.

          • @chewkl: Looks like I bought it for $31 too. Just checked. That item is no more available. Sorry

      • I don't have a hose or access to one, so just wondering if a manual pressure sprayer could possibly get similar results?

        • No way near as good apparently. Personally if I don't have a proper pressure washer and snow cannon kit, I wouldn't bother trying snow foam.

    • It foams well but it doesn't actually trap dirt as well as a proper pre-wash foam. Foam Canon wise, I have a bowdens because I didn't wanna muck around with overseas shipping and wanted something with a wide range of adaptor availability.

Right up there with the best…thanks OP.

  • Hey op.

Any deals on snow foam gun?

    Thanks

They're still on sale in Repco, just under $60. Bowden or meguiars snow cannon kit

      • Yes, go check out Repco as suggested by ksirc. I bought the Meguiar's kit from Sparesbox eBay earlier this month with 20% discount code at around $52 but I think that deal has long ended now.

      • Just a note for anyone looking at the bowdens one in repco - yes it's a good deal but it doesn't come with the adapter for gerni/karcher when compared to the supercheap one (which does).

Just something to keep in mind

        • +2

You must have got shafted. I bought the Bowdens one from repco and got both the gerni and karcher adaptors.
It said it on the box.

          • @8azinga: Thanks for your reply, I didn't buy from repco, but what I said earlier was just from online research.

From the Bowden's website it states:
"AutObarn and Supercheap Auto retail box comes with both the Karcher K series and Gerni/ Kew/ Alto/ Stihl/ Nilfisk Pro adapters"

So I thought otherwise at Repco since it doesn't specifically state on their site that it includes the adapters.

Cheers for confirming in real life though!

buy them off ebay. they are the same thing but 1/3 the price

      • Any recommendations on an eBay one that doesn't leak at the joints?

      • +1

Can seemingly confirm that, a lot of the $50 - $100 snowfoam guns seem to just be private labels from Alibaba.

I took the plunge and bought a no name ebay one… which looked identical to Alibaba listing… which then looks identical to the premium branded ones a few friends of mine bought. Not sure about the internal components but mines been going strong for years, as has theirs.

  • I’ll try to price match at autobarn this afternoon.

    • Last month Autobarn wouldn't price match Supercheap because it was at their cost price.
That's one way to lose a customer forever.

      • +1

Went to Repco first as it was on my way, managed to get it price matched at $19.

I can vouch for this with snow gun. Foams up amazingly and has a great afterglow to it.

  • Does this have any paint protection??? I got a truck that's hardly ever washed. Concerned the paint will go bad after a number of years without any sort of waxing/paint protection, will this wash help it keep paint in top condition? if not can anyone recommend a good "foam" paint protection product? (The sort that's in laser car washes (foam car then wash off).

    • This is just straight car wash, no paint protection. You need to apply a special coat by professionals or by yourself (if you know how to do it) if you want paint protection.

    • +1

Nu Finish - Once a year car polish.
Is a great protectant. It has polish in the name but it is usually used as the finial step as a protectant after a polish. Its great value and even better if on 50% off sale. Super easy to apply. Give the truck a thorough wash, the less you put on the less you have to wipe off then you are done.
Another good product that will give protection is Repco's yellow wash & wax sold in 1L bottles for about $15. This requires a regular washing first but to really get the effect of the wax you want to do a second washing straight away but this time work the wax onto the vehicle's paint instead of focusing on removing dirt and not scratching the paint like the first wash. Depending on the size of your truck, this may be a large job.

If your truck is properly painted with 2-Pack paint then there is no need to worry, that paint will be around for a long time. Around 1992 car manufactures started to switch to 2-pack paint in Australia but I am unfamiliar for trucks. If anything I would expect they switched even earlier.

    • If you're concerned the paint is gonna get damaged then wash it more often. No product is going to replace a little maintenance

  • I prefer Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax (the yellow one) over this Gold Class. Ultimate Wash and Wax feels thicker and leaves a silkier finish afterwards due to containing carnauba wax. I give my cars a quick wash/rinse with the cheap blue Mechanix wash/wax from Bunnings first though.

    1. Bunnings Mechanix Wash/Wax rinse
    2. Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax
    3. Bowden's Own Boss Gloss w/clay bar (sometimes skip this step)
    4. Bowden's Own Fully Slick

Gold Class is still good though. Would probably pick some up if I needed it, since I'm effectively waxing twice anyway using Bowden's Own.

    • Do you use a foam cannon at any stage of your washing?

      • No I don't use a foam cannon - should I use one? I only use the foam cannon at the coin-op self-wash when it's not busy (and the owners aren't there) so I can still wash using cloths and not the dirty foaming brush they have.

I wash everything by hand (microfibre finger sponge/cloth, microfibre drying cloths, 2 buckets etc). Usually takes me around 30-45 mins.

  • Thanks OP. Picked one up from Erina Supercheap this afternoon and they had a couple left on the shelf.

  • How does this stuff compare to CT20 (with wax)?

Also regarding foam guns: I don't have a hose or access to one, so just wondering if a manual pressure sprayer such as the one linked below could possibly get similar results to a foam gun?
